There is such a beautiful logic to your playing (and arranging) style. More formally trained musicians (with lots of music theory under their belts) have nothing on you. I'm not knocking those who study music theory at all.. but rather am only saying a person doesn't need formal training to produce beautiful music... and you are a testament to that. Keep up the great work.

I've watched this video a dozen times since I discovered it this morning. I never thought of playing the G7 or the Dm the way he does but I like how it fits with the tune. I'll start working on the song tonight!

Yo I just discovered that also and I've never seen that and I was playing mr. Bojangles with the David Bromberg copy and I was looking for that note, that he was playing, I found it that's when I found that was a G7 also and I've never seen that in 45yrs. That don't say much for me but whatever

FYI I did end up learning that arrangement! I’m not as smooth as Allen but it is a start. I’m sure I just saw Allen tonight in Brevard at the Brian Sutton concert.

Economy of motion was mentioned to me first in 1983 when I became acquainted with Mark Wright, a recent Julliard graduate. There he studied the fingering strategy of Julian Bream and, believe it or not, cellists like Casals and Ma.

Question about the Em chord. When I googled chord charts for this song, none showed the Em chord, but rather hung on the C, then moved to the C7. I'm trying to understand, from a music theory perspective, why we substitute the C with the Em. I did notice that if you replace the C cowboy chord with the C bar chord at the 3rd fret, and then progress to the C Major 7 bar chord at 3rd fret, and then C7 bar chord at 3rd fret, it works nicely, If you do so, the major 7th of the C is B, which is the 5th of that Em, but that doesn't explain to me why the Em fits so well. I love this well played rendition. It took me a few hours the other night but I've got it under my fingers. Thanks so much.

Hi guitarstevie2, excellent question! I wish I knew the answer! Ha! I am only half joking, but I will do my best to explain. Before I do, understand that I am self-taught, no lessons, play by ear, and my knowledge of music theory is EXTREMELY limited. So I will explain it as best as I can based on my approach. And I'm sure a music scholar will be along to correct me, and give us both a lesson, which is ok too. So in essence, you kind of already answered your own question, but your answer lies on the Cmaj7th on the 2,3, and 4 strings with the dominant root (Cmajor) maintained on the 5th string, 3rd fret- in other words, your bar chord. Here is the difference in what I played, and WHY I played. By the way, the Cmaj7 works great as well. So when I play the lead notes, in my head I am hearing the accompaniment (rhythm) playing, which is why I often play in chord shapes (especially on slower songs). In this song, I am following a bass line down as a chromatic scale. You did the same thing, except you did it on the third string starting at the 5th fret, walking down to the2nd, then 3rd fret (which is the C7 note). If you followed that scale into the next note down, it would be the 3rd string 2nd fret, which works because at this point in the song you are in the Fmaj chord. Are you with me so far? So I am playing the same notes, but on the 5th string instead. So when I play the rhythm, I don't play the E note as the dominant root, but start my rhythm stroke (root) on the B note- part of the Em triad of course. In the next rhythm stroke, I don't play the 5th string as dominant, because I want the 7th note to stand out (even though I am playing a C note on the 5th string again). In that same regard, when I play the F chord next, I try to show the 3rd string, 2nd fret as more dominant than the F root. I hope this kind of makes sense.
