What's so ironic about this is that literally, Dream forgot that he needed flint and steel for the portal in the beginning and after this trap he found several flint and steels in the overworld while looking for the stronghold.

I think the best way is one hunter dies and get a flint. Then go up to the roof of the nether as dream did. They could've escaped the nether without discarding anything.

you should have broke a piece of obsidian from the portal. that way if one died and tried to run back to the portal in the overworld and light it. they whould need a little more stuff to make light it again. now its 1 iron and flint and if you broke a piece they also needed to get a bucket and lava and water to make the portal complete again lol
