Dream of Italy

Dream of Italy

9 жыл бұрын

In the sixth episode of season 1 of Dream of Italy (PBS travel series), we head to the heel of Italy - Puglia. Local Tonino Benincasa gives host Kathy McCabe an introduction to the Baroque city of Lecce with a classic car ride. Lecce is famous for its paper mâché and we see how nativity scene figures are crafted at Cartapesta Claudio Riso. Outside Lecce, in the town of Squinzano, Kathy meets the locals and gets a ride in a tiny Ape car to an olive mill where locals are dancing the pizzica in celebration of the harvest. A local mama teaches Kathy to make orecchiette (pasta). Alberobello is famous for its classic cone-shaped houses (trulli) and we learn the history of them. In seaside Monopoli, Kathy’s friend Antonello Losito introduces her to an old man who makes beautiful model boats. For more information, visit www.dreamofitaly.com

This is where my people are from: Bari, Grumo, San Savero, Foggia to the North, San Nicole, and when I visited, all I could see were my "family" -- the mannerisms, gestures, warmth, that left me with life-long memories. The land of both of maternal and paternal grandparents.

In Oct 2020, Gabriel Traveler featured a few cone shape houses in ruins near the border of Turkey & Syria, the shape were barely there due to time passed & neglect. It was not a tourist spot due to the proximity to Syria. The local Turkish guy did mentioned that the only other place which has there cone shape houses are in Puglia, Italy. I'm glad to hear the confirmation from this local Trulli guide, Puglia is on my bucket list now.

Beautiful beaches, great food and drinks all provided by people that know how to live very close to heaven, while still connected to their home soil. The only thing about Monopoli's explanation was the misnomer that the ottoman's returned the favor for the crusades when it invaded. In fact, the muslim armies had attacked italy long before the ottomans. the crusades were an action that came as a result of the 400 years of unending war of conquest against the christian byzantines in the east and the latins in the west.

I'm from Puglia and I'd suggest that you rent a car if you plan to visit several places other than major cities. Head down to Salento if you want to discover one of the most beautiful coastlines of Italy and pristine, crystal clear sea, togehter with wonderful food and people. I'm surprised actually as to why this video doesn't show the beauty of the Salento sea.
@christiaan81music
@christiaan81music 8 жыл бұрын
Well I decided to do it by train! It was very doable and to rent a car would be more costly. I visited Bari, Trani, Alberobello, Locorotondo, Lecce, Galatina (Basilica di Santa Caterina di Alessandria!), Gallipoli, Otranto and finally Matera which I loved as well! Unfortunately couldn't fit in Monopli and Ostuni, and sad enough didn't see a pizzica performance.. Nonetheless really had a great vacation! Coming back home hearing about the tragic train accident is so sad :/ .

***** I'm specifically talking about the sea and the coastline and no, there are not places just as beautiful in Puglia (if anything they're very different), because Salento coastline and sea are totally unique, also due to the crossing of two seas (Adriatic and Ionio); several people from Northern Puglia come down to Salento to appreciate that beauty. I'm just saying that in this video that part of Puglia is missing, and it's a real pity, because it's a very good video for the rest.

The driver is right. Italy is a rich ethnic mix. Can’t do much about that, it’s smack in the middle of the Mediterranean(middle earth) with its flanks crossing different neighbours and it’s’ head ‘ bumping close to France,Austria, Switzerland etc. it’s feet pointing towards Greece, And the near East.
