Dream Shop Ep3: Man Door in a Pole Barn

I added a man door to my metal pole barn shop! The only other man door was on the opposite side of the building which was less than desirable. And using the sliding doors would greatly increase cooling and heating costs. So I put a man door into what will be the office, which also creates a sally port for the climate control! Overall it was a pretty simple project - despite my hideous interior framing. The main consideration there was just being able to add drywall since the interior framing was nonstructural.

Nice video. I was searching for ideas on installing a door in a pole building. My understanding is most doors in big box stores are for ordinarily constructed homes with 2x4 walls. Ideally, the hinge pivot should be inside the building in a location so the doou can have a full 180 degree open swing. The brickmould is included and attached for that common opening. My understanding to install a door like this in a wall of unknown thickness you must remove the brickmould first. Then locate the hinge in your opening at the desired location and mount the doir as you did. After that you build a "jam extender" and replace the brickmould or in aome cases you can simply opt for a different style trim like your j-channel against the jam extension. Often the jam extension is covered with metal (usually requires a brake). What do you think?

Exterior doors are normally inswing so an intruder can't pop the hinge pins and pull the door out of the jamb. Having the hinges flush with the interior wall surface does provide maximum swing.. assuming there isn't something in the way. I have a wall that block 180' swing, and then I put a cabinet in that corner, that limits my swing before the way I installed my door limits it. The way you're describing it would have been a cleaner looking install and what I'd do if I was installing in a home or something.

Several years ago I picked one up on a heavy discount for the house. Immediately fell in love with it, took a few days but my wife agreed that we'd never live without them anymore, haha. Have them all on the entry doors and the shop door now. A bathroom would be nice.. I need to see if the drain is tied to the septic system or not. If it is, I might add one.

Looks good. May I suggest some of those long deck screws in your latch plate in case someone really wants to try to get in. Also, the touchpad locks are pricey but worth it, the shop is always locked and its easy to open.

@@JimPepperTactical Yep, that was just for the door handle. Best practice would be for both.. but I normally just do the dead bolt - cause I almost never lock the door with the deadbolt anyway. Defeats the purpose of the keypad

Progress! Was wondering if you were going to gravel the outside edge. I'm sure you have already thought about this (and other's have suggested) but have you considered a small concrete pad at the entrance of the new man door? Mentioning this because limestone gravel will continue to make dust that will then get tracked into your office. That mess gets old fast. Also caught your "I wish it only cost $20K" comment.. Yea, most people have no idea how much concrete, etc costs. With the covid pandemic, everything is more expensive. Keep it going and best wishes! (have your son help with shoveling the gravel along the edge! :)
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, and yes! Initially the plan was just gravel. Then I realized I need a door mat and boot brush, so I'll also do a small pad there at a minimum. Still torn on whether or not I'll do the whole thing in concrete... probably not. And yeah, the budget is $20k just to convert the building into a shop.

Genuine question: shouldn't the 2x4s on the door header be on edge, not on face? I know structurally it doesn't matter much, but that's always been my understanding for door headers.
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 3 жыл бұрын
For anything with a load, yes. I turned them the way I did just for expediency since there's no load at all on it. It's faster because doubled up 2x material is only 3" thick, but the 2x4s are 3.5" deep. So they need a plywood spacer to bring them to the same thickness. Or... just turn them the "wrong" way. Again, only did that just because the only thing this will carry is the weight of the drywall that'll go on it.

For natural light in the office. I've spent enough of my life working in windowless rooms. Does it increase risk? Maybe. I'm in a rural area, the building will have an alarm, and there's already a window in it anyway.

Good job. I am planning on installing a door into my metal shop but I have never done that before. I wish your video contained more detail for the novice. I think that your video is not adequate for a novice and not necessary for someone that has done this before. Anyway, at least I have an idea of what is involved. Thanks.

@@YouCanMakeThisToo The first clue came when you said... //"This metal is pretty verticle."// ...huh? Are you trying to say that the vertical siding is plumb? The second clue was at about 4:20 - 4:35... lol Third, you certainly didn't need that mastic or the tube of caulking you placed under that threshold. Setting the J-channel in a bead of caulk around the brick molding would be more than sufficient e.g. with 8 foot shed roof over the area. Forth, you generally shim a prehung door with it closed to assure uniform spacing between jam and door. My point being that while what you've done appears to be adequate, you clearly aren't coming from a position of expertise. I do applaud your initiative. Too many people think such tasks to be overwhelming without even trying. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
