Labrie will forever have my respect. He has been through the ringer of vocal issues. Imagine being able to sing like this and lose that ability because of SHELLFISH. you would atleast fall into deep depression if not quit singing entirely. Instead of quitting, he has persevered and been the front man of this band, bringing us amazing performances to this day. the frustration of not sounding the way you used to, and distain from fans who want him booted and cant appreciate what he is for the band would defeat most people. My favorite vocalist of all time and my role model.

Good god, Labrie was just incredible in these days. That high end, Freddie Mercuryesque sheen in his upper range is the thing that just never returned after his voice blew out the next year. He's improved greatly from where he was in the mid 90s but man, you forget what an absolute monster he was. Even so, he's got one of the more difficult jobs on the touring circuit. These guys have played marathon shows on an almost nightly basis on tour for the last 20+ years and play everything in the original key. When you consider that, the guy is STILL an absolute monster.

I think a lot was lost when the seven string nightmare began. Maybe it didn’t happen in awake because they were experimenting with that heavier sounds for the first time. In their first albums bass, guitar and keyboards served the song on a perfect harmony. None stood out above the other, kevin moore kept it simple (but beautiful) with his choir sounds (wich, i think really helped to honor the name of the band. I think the “dream theater” name lost sense over time), john myung had a LOT of melodic lines, take learning to live as an example. Nowdays he is just relegated to a rhytmic function, playing the same riffs that petrucci plays on his 7 string but lower, wich makes no sense. By last, at that time john petrucci didn’t throw crazy speedy solos on every song. He had equal presence on that holy trinity of harmony. When rudess came in they started slowly to drown john myung between the keyboard and guitar. They lost that simple, but beautiful and effective keyboard sounds. They kept it on metropolis pt 2, but since six degrees rudess started to play TOO MUCH leads. If we add to that the fact that john petrucci started to add a second guitar in the songs with the purpose of not losing the rhytm guitar when he was playing leads, they totally killed john myung. I mean, it is like dream theater have two guitarrist in the studio, they destroyed that perfect harmony trinity. Lets take a random old song as an example: a change of seasons, particularly the part of the final guitar solo before sherinian keyboard solo. So, you have a sober petrucci solo clean of ego, a moore synth sound supporting with a much more emotional vibe and a myung beautiful bass line that you can actually HEAR, filling a lot of space between moore and petrucci. If they would have writen that some years after, petrucci would add a second guitar supporting him behind his solo, the keyboard would grow a big ego and will not want to play just a chord with a synth effect. That would be unacceptable. By last and the most sad thing: the beautiful bass line that you can actually hear and that can breath between the harmony would be totally killed and myung would be relegated to be drowning behind a second guitar that just exist on the studio. playing the same riff that a overgained 7 string guitar so you can barely hear him, i dont know, maybe because they hate him. The old perfect harmony killed. Thats how a band transforms on a bad joke of themselves.

I discovered DT in 1994 with this live. After few seconds of "Under a glass moon" I was totally bewitched. When the drums entered I could not believe to my ears and the solo of Petrucci is an anthology of guitar playing. I had never heard music like that. Since that moment, DT became my favourite band.

You can tell that a lot of planning and an lot of practice went into making the images and words record. It wasn't like hey boys lets go into the studio and hit the record button and see what happens. It's a record that changed the landscape and an absolute masterpiece from start to finish.
Mike Portnoy’s drum kit and sound during this era of the band is by far my favorite. So much feel in his playing.

This live performance was played a month before I was born, and realizing that they were my age of today just makes me watch in awe all the more (and also kinda funny when I imagine how they would have been thinking & feeling back then at this age). Some songs in this live are my favourite version ("Take The Time" being the most), I love them even much more than studio recordings. Their songs and live performances are still brilliant today, but everything in this live is just plainly genius. Definitely one of their best lives. Thanks for filling my life with great music, my favourite band of all times! Lots of love from Korea.

Yeah, I hear it all the times, that LaBrie dont fit, cant sing and all of the mud, but... consider that guy is a monster singer if you listen to his solo albums as well, and the range of his voice is unbelievable together with keepin up with those beasts, in my opinion cant imagine better singer to fit in the range and versatility they play, to anyone who is musically educated is so clear that this cant be done better...
@Khazandar5 жыл бұрын
LaBrie can sing, absolutely. But his power and range was completely shot after his throat issues in the 90's.

I still remember the early 90's when thrash metal and shredder trends started to fade, my friends turned to bands from Seattle when the grunge epidemic broke out but I chose a different path. Dream Theater, Watchtower, Pain of Salvation, Psychotic Waltz, Ivory Tower and other early progressive metal bands as my ninja way.

I have been a fan of these guys since the Mid-90's when I first heard their Images and Words CD. I think that I got the Cd back when you could order 10 CDs for a few bucks from Columbia House or something. I LOVED what I heard. As a keyboardist, I am blown away by the sound textures, especially considering the small setup that appears on stage for Kevin Moore. From what I see, he is using a Korg DW-8000, Roland JD-800, and possibly a Korg DSS1 (maybe, it is hard to see that side keyboard). There was so much energy during this show. They are one of my favorite bands, and Images and Words is my favorite album from them...

@@fignootin Sometimes I think maybe it's just nostalgia but whenever I go back to stuff from the 90's, I'm always blown away again. No era was perfect of course but I really do think the 90's was likely the most impressive time in all of history. So much innovation, beauty, and excitement without technology taking over our lives. Sure, technology always improves in ways but the utilization of that technology does not always result in an improvement, if you know what I mean.

I saw DT in 93, at the Hampton beach casino. I was 18. They blew my mind! "The Galactic Cowboys" opened the show I was at. They were fantastic too!! This VHS tape never left my player. I played it every day for so long it's kinda ridiculous! "To Live Forever" was a song that wasn't released till many years later. This version always will be my favorite. Love that this is on-line now! I will watch this many times now!! Thanks for posting!
