Dude I have tears in my eyes when I watch this... Why? Labrie... Poor, POOR guy... This dude was pretty much the best singer in the entire fucking world, displaying out-of-this-world performances like this and the killing hand, with energy, having so much fun. And then BAM... vocal chord rupture. Don't get me wrong I still love him to death but just imagine for second how he would have evolved over time with the voice he had in '93... Fucking love you Labrie, I wish we could go back in time to prevent this unfortunate event. You're the best!

I saw them live on 2014 and Labrie sang the all songs like he sings in the albums, so he was beyond amazing. I believe that he can sing now, like he used to.

jpetrucci Sorry man, but you got to be completely deaf if you think that today Labrie sings as good as in this video. His voice is now completely different, he uses different singing technique and his voice just aged. He sound nothing like in the old times. Just listen to Wacken 2015 and then listen to this video again.

Gladius8 I'm not deaf, but clearly you don't want to or can't understand what I'm saying. After food poisoning, he sings really good afterall it was a terrible disase for a singer, that's what I meant. Check out his singing from 2000's and listen to his newly performances you'll see the difference. The disease was really a pain in the ass for him, and yet he wasn't terrible in singing but he wasn't the best ofc, he was sick with his vocal cords. But he fully covered from the disase and now he is nearly as good as he was back then. That's what I meant. I'm not saying that he sings the same as he was in this video. But as I said befdore, after a huge terrible disase; he sings nearly the same as he sang back then. And as I stated in my comment above, I saw them live on 2014 and I was truly amazed with his singing. He sounded nearly the same as he did in the recordings.

Fucking perfection. I was 21 years old in 1992. Dream Theater had been on my radar since Images and Words was released. James hadn’t had his bout with food poisoning yet. Kevin was still in the band. John Petrucci was evolving as a guitarist at Mach 3. Awake was great, too, then it all started to change. Kevin leaving the band hurt their sound and songwriting approach tremendously. They were and are still great, but this lineup beats any after it. Take me back to 1992-1994 please.

The problem is, 1993 petrucci couldnt play the 2003- solos. But modern petrucci can't phrase like that anymore. The phrasing is a thing of beauty. Epic tone too. His last good tone was probably on black clouds. That was good too.

Yup. People dont appreciate that the others are using TOOLS and he is using a biological instrument. The human body has limits Ups and downs. Blow your vocals once and it's probably never the same. You can tell he is at the limit of human vocal potential. It's amazing he didnt explode on the last note haha I will listen to this song another thousand times. At least!

One can only wonder what things would've been like if he (A) hadn't ruptured his vocal cords or (B) had taken the 6-12 months off like his doctors suggested after it happened. LaBrie even said it took almost 8 years before he felt back to almost normal.

@@emanuelherrerias4082 It is indeed a big difference between instrumentalists and singers. However, the practice of "know your limits" still applies, and even more for singers! If you record a whole album right on the edge of what you're capable of singing, and then try to go on tour and do that same thing almost every day, then you have set a pretty damn certain "vocal health trap" for yourself. Knowing your limit and how much and how long you can push it is a vital strength to have as a singer, and LaBrie really messed up there - he wanted to prove too much when he took over from Charlie Dominici and since then his voice has been declining (the food poisoning sure didn't help either, but he would have blown his voice out sooner or later anyway with how hard he was pushing himself).

I completely agree about Petrucci. He’s still an amazing musician but there’s no denying that some aspects of his guitar playing seem to have completely disappeared over the years - such as the jazzy, fusionesque lines, heck even a clean guitar sound seems improbable for modern-day ‘metal’ Petrucci. I figure that Petrucci tastes have simply become heavier because I can’t see the guy being unable to play this more versatile stuff, but I could be wrong.

I would have to agree. They had this special vibe on Images and Words. They were in their own league and they sang of powerful lyrics that uplifted into a special realm. Their style reminds me of Powermetal but they didn’t abuse the speed and they just were different. They for sure are an intellectual band. It takes a special person to appreciate Dream Theater especially in their Images and words era.

I've seen a lot of comments on LaBrie's voice. This was when his voice was at it's peak. About a year or so after this performance, James blew out his vocal chords and it's been a tough go ever since. The man is still awesome. He can still crank out the tunes. I am always looking forward to the next Dream Theater project. On an interesting note, there was a conversation at work today about what album you would like to have with you if you were stranded on an island...I responded with "Anything from Dream Theater." Blank stares around the room..."Who is that? I pulled out my phone and played "Honor Thy Father" and jaws hit the floor. They asked when this band came out and I said "oh...1985 or so but really started excelling in 1991...and they're still making music." I'm pretty sure there are at least 2 dozen NEW Dream Theater fans added today.

+MuvoTX I saw Morse 2 weeks ago in Deep Purple. It was flawless, only playing chromatism with a poor sound (47 delays, 4 chorus, 5 disto). Not even bending on the right notes in key moments.... Plz link me an awesome sound or video so I can hear something decent from the guy. Here, Petrucci nailed it, that's so good.... I need more stuff like this. Had to comment on the solo because to me it's a masterpiece and easily in my top 5 favorite. A lot of people, especially guitar players like myself(30 years) listen to this and might comment on who he sounds like or say they liked his style/sound was better back then. A lot of guitar players at this level eventually change their sound/style and I think a big part of it is that they don't want to sound like anyone else anymore. That's the way I feel anyway. To me, John sounds a lot like early Joe Satriani and is why I like it so much, and now John sounds like John.Not saying that's bad. I was lucky enough in high school to have a "Guitar God" as a teacher in Jeff Loomis. I was his last student of the day and he would always stay late to just jam with me. Weather he played something he made up or a rock/metal song I would sit across from him trying to playing along in complete awe at his sound/skill/melody/style/you name it. After he made it big I couldn't listen to him anymore because his style changed so much.

I still love DT, but the Images and Words/Awake era is the best DT, imho. A lot of people decry Portnoy leaving as the “change” that really upset the balance. I would go back much further to when Kevin Moore left. He fit them perfectly. His songwriting influence is sorely missed.

Love this performance. The Live In Tokyo DVD is so killer. Back when LaBrie went for it all. I saw them a month before this show in Hampton Beach, NH (July 1993) and they were fire. Love how Petrucci incorporates the "Within You, Without You" melody into his solo too. Brilliant!

I know LaBrie probably can't sing like this anymore (though he does sing pretty well nowadays, almost better in many ways), but I really wish Petrucci would go back to this guitar tone. I love the ambient, heavy reverb/delay feel as opposed to most of his new guitar work.. though I did really like their newest album, Black Clouds, and Octavarium.

Man I totally agree. His tone in I&W, Awake and ACOS are absolutely among the very best in metal history. Such clarity and definition, with some delay and reverb it combines focus and ambience like no other. I miss that tone, rather than the muddy tone with tons of modulation he uses nowadays.

This is from 1993 - the images and words tour in Japan. Labrie's voice was at its best (someone else mentioned his cords issue - that killed him for a good 3-5 years but he stayed with it. If you notice performances from that time frame Labrie looks blotted - steroids for his voice. He has since recovered clearly) and this is the Petrucci I love. Passionate, raw and soulful. Particularly with this song. It makes one ache to realize the foolishness of conceiving infinite life. There would be no point to anything. One of the best live performances by them I've seen recorded. And I'll take Portney anyday over Mangini. Mangini may be technically better - portney had soul and added a lot of improv to his play - a key element in a band of this nature. Love these guys.

The lighting, just puts u in a trance! Especially when i was a youngster! High on weed and watched for the first time! I still remember the feeling i gave me then. Just starting to be a drummer. Such a masterpiece of a VHS! Those who were at this concert truly had the best experience in misic history imo!!

I don't know why, but to me JP between 1992-1998 and JP afterwards sounded like two entirely different guitarists. I MUCH prefer John's playing during the early years.

X Y I agree. Petrucci in the 90s was full of melody, solos that breathed, with great phrasing. It’s as if he was possessed by some metal gods and ordered today to play a million notes per minute in every solo. Too bad. 👎

I think it was a combination of Jordan joining the band, and a general change in attitude. DT's first 5 albums were more old school 80s and 90s prog rock and metal, with some fusion elements. Starting with Six Degrees, they all of a sudden decided they would be a more mainstream metal band with progressive elements. And ever since Octavarium there's been at least one song on each album they try to push as a hit single. I bring up Jordan because his compositional style is totally different from Derek and Kevin, and his affection for virtuosic wank rubbed off on JP.

@@scylla4342, they had written most of the Scenes material when Rudess joined the band, his playing was perfect on this album. Six Degrees and the following albums are a boring meh most of the time.
