I saw the band in Zurich two days ago, I found the setlist amazing (i managed to avoid all the spoilers for a full month), it was fantastic to see Mike behind this gigantic purple monster of a kit. James' voice was also weak on the opening song and other old songs, but he also had his highlights, especially This is the Life, Vacant and Octavarium where he had more strength. At 60+, he's still playing 3h shows with several days in a row, this is undeniably challenging. To the haters who want him out, he is not going anywhere. A real solution for the issues with James’ voice… get in a 2nd vocalist who can take over for parts of songs where James is no longer able to reach anymore. James definitely needs to remain in the band. Then that also gives an additional voice to bring the missing studio recorded harmonies which would elevate the band even higher. I also firmly believe it needs to be a male singer. A female voice would be like bringing in a Country Player if Petrucci was ever injured. Can’t wait for them to come to Japan. Still nothing announced as yet.

You mix feelings with critical thinking. Just because you "love it" does not mean that the quality is there, and whatever they do is good. Some people love to eat MacDonalds food, but that does not mean that MacDonalds food has any quality when it comes to nutrition. You know what I mean? Fanboy mentality does not help, at all... Hey, I still prefer Mangini on drums, and I would love to see Dream Theater with a more rocker, bluesy, soulful vocalist. Ever heard Russel Allen or Jorn Lande? But anyway, even though I prefer Mangini, I think that DT is indeed DT with Portnoy. Both are two of my favorite drummers. DT are still in the top of their game, minus the vocalist. Don't get me wrong, Labrie is a great vocalist, but for a metal band, I think other options would be more proper, to say the least! Anyway, DT have such a great legacy in music, and that should be appreciate it. Petrucci is indeed one of the best in the Prog Metal world, which is his "comfortable zone", amazing for sure, as a guitarist and as a song writer in the respective style; but not the same quality playing blues, jazz, flamenco, and other styles of music. Every rooster on its branch. Petrucci is one my favorites, though. And he seems a cool guy, too.
@progreport2 ай бұрын
Nah. Those guys are great. But LaBrie has always been the best voice for this band.
@LightningZtrikez2 ай бұрын
The "best voice" for DT according to your opinion. Other people may have different opinions, according to their own tastes, their notion of what greatness is, of what makes a vocalist more proper for the style x or y. Again, Petrucci is an amazing metal prog guitarist, but I wouldn't place him playing in a blues band, or a traditional jazz band, because his style of playing is not the most proper. You know what I mean? Every rooster on its branch! I like the voice of Labrie in ballads and in calmer moments, more pop-ish even, but when it comes to the most metal and rocker moments of the band, which demands more power, energy, depth and dynamics, even aggressiveness, the band loses because of the singer. Listen DT covering Pantera's "cemetary gates", live, with Russel Allen, and listen to the difference of vocal power kzbin.info/www/bejne/joakZmOln7uahrc ... just my two cents! Just like DT had another drum level with Mangini, how do you know they wouldn't have another vocal level with another type of vocalist? Or the classic discussion: it's DT better with Sherinian, Moore or the current keyboardist? So, in the end, the question is: who do you prefer. And not who is best for this or that, although this is also an issue to be analyzed. But yeah, they are a great band for sure, one of my favorites. Congratulations on having a legacy of this magnitude, which is rare. For that alone they should be appreciated.

How cruel human beings can be. I think you guys didn't understand what this tour is about and that everyone, without exception, has limitations these days. James is really struggling and sounds horrendous as a result. There's no undue hate or weird hocus pocus going on here; cell phone cameras are not distorting reality and making James sound out of key or sound worse than he is in person, he is objectively poor whether there are cameras recording or not. Please wake up people and accept reality. I know it's hard, believe me, I've been a devoted fan since 1992 and defended James until 2014, so it was very tough having to accept he'd lost the range, but enough is enough. The man simply does not have the mechanics required to sing these songs competently any more, and that's okay. There is no shame in natural decay and stepping down. The voice is a very tough thing to maintain, and unfortunately for James he is well past it.

James suffered from food poisoning, which damaged his vocal cords for life. He was a topnotch vocalist when they recorded Images and Awake. It took decades to recover and he sounded better when I saw them in 2017 performing the whole Images and Words album. So yes age in addition to other things does impact his voice. Geddy Lee lost his voice too at one point and could never reach higher notes again. He had to adapt while pleasing fans who wanted to hear older songs, and that was it. James made phenomenal effort and it deserves praise along with critical comments instead of constant bashing.
