A Dream Theater song that is sorely neglected in reaction videos is IN THE PRESENCE OF ENEMIES Parts 1 (9min) & 2 (16m39s) from their Systematic Chaos recording. Another masterpiece that deserves attention....

@@shupakiko The two best opening songs by Dream Theater are The Glass Prison and In The Presence of Enemies part 1. Part 1 is the best one because it's IMMEDIATE. Glass Prison takes 30 seconds or so before it gets hardcore, but it gets more hardcore than part 1.

This song is honestly the perfect outro song for an album. The ending slowly guides you down to a landing.

Learning to Live has always been my favorite Dream Theater song! Make sure to listen to studio version too, it's way more clear to understand what's going on and appreciate all these riffs and melodies. There is no reggae part (this was introduced for Jordan Ruddess to have fun with his solo during live shows) but the final part is even more epic, with vocalizes and a chorus that would sound really great if they let the audience sing it. For some reason they've opted for instrumental version instead. I've been doing an interview with Jordan Ruddess back in 2009 or 2010 on their tour with Opeth, and he was so much older than here, already having white hair. But the same energy! Yes, this is from their Scenes from the Memory tour back in 2000, playing the whole album among other songs, one of their most amazing performances that I remember, although I was at the one in Kraków, Poland. Fun fact, on their next tour, when they were playing whole Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence suit, I've slept through half of the concert. That's because a night before I was organizing a party for DT fans from all over the country and after the party 13 of them were sleeping at my place. Also on the concert day there were my exams to get to the university, which I have no idea how I passed being so tired already. Once I arrived to the venue, I was simply exhausted and when I came from the stage standing area to the sitting part of the venue, I became too comfortable and fall asleep. Luckily I woke up for the encores.

Damn, the one track that you decided to do live is one that's best on the studio, purely for James' vocals on the studio version 1994-2004 was a rough period for his vocals because he was recovering from a bad food poisoning incident that permanently damaged his vocals. He wasn't able to hit the notes he used to on this performance

Haha my thoughts exactly! Most DT is amazing live, but this one is phenomenal with the studio version (and a great ending to the album).

Figures that everyone seems to always say "CHECK OUT THE LIVE PERFORMANCES!!", but the one I do, everyone says "Oh THIS one is better in studio!" LOL. Figures. Thanks for the listen! Much appreciated.
@TheBlackQueen Жыл бұрын
@@ophreacts214 Yeah lol it always be like that with most reactors. I believe KZbin has a Poll option with their community posts so you could utilise that feature to decide on some songs that may have a particular live performance that's better to see or if the studio version should be done first. For Live DT, I'd go with: -Under A Glass Moon from Tokyo 1993 -Instrumedley (Multi-Angle performance) from Budokhan 2004 -The Dance Of Eternity from New York Metropolis 2000 -The entire Metropolis Pt 2 album performed at New York Metropolis 2000 Obviously some will have other great examples, but apart from these, the studio versions imo are the best to go with.

Hey man, Karnivool brought me to your channel. Went through a decade long fascination with Dream Theater, this song grew on me so much... Just love the powerhouse outro, a fantastic way to end a masterpiece album? Great band! Enjoying the content mate, wishing all the best to you in this life, cheers.

Hey Tom. Great viewing. Glad you finally did a live. That's all I do is Live. This concert was in New York City, in 2000. Metropolis 2000. Metropolis is New York City. That's where Superman was from. In 2011 Mike Portnoy wasn't with the group. He left in 2010. Waitin for the next one. "In the Presents of Enemies" Live. You'll love it even more. I'm finding this out but the video apparently has a mistake. You can even see it here in my reaction where it says Tel Aviv 2011. Thanks for the note and for the listen!!
@alanalanis2257 Жыл бұрын
Actually I think you got the wrong concert date. This was the Live Scenes from New York show in 2000. In 2011 Mike Mangini was already the drummer. Portnoy is the drummer in this live performance.

Yeah, you're the second person to point that out, however, if you look at the video description...you can even see it right in my reaction...it says Tel Aviv 2011, so I guess that's an error?? Anyway, thanks for stopping by!

@@ophreacts214 yeah, I noticed what you were looking at, and that's definitely an error. This wasn't even at Tel Aviv, it was in NY. Really enjoy your reactions... keep em coming. Btw, fun fact since you enjoy a good bourbon - Petrucci has his own signature bourbon that was created in collaboration with the Iron Smoke distillery called "Rock the Barrel". You should check it out. Cheers!

Based on what I've listened to over the years, LaBrie's live vocals are kinda hit and miss, but I'd still like to attend a DT concert someday, just to say I've heard them perform live at least once. If I ever do get that chance, I guess all I can do is hope that I catch them on a good night lol.

It's always a little rough to hear the live version as James just can't hit that F#5 at 9:27 very well after his vocal injury in 1994. While this song is beautiful, the meaning behind the song is sad and will be lost on younger viewers as it's about the AIDS crisis. With this album coming out in 1992, this was immediately after both Freddie Mercury's death from AIDS and Magic Johnson being forced to retire from the NBA due to being HIV positive (both occurred in November of 1991). John Myung (bassist) wrote the lyrics to the song using and really drove home how uncertain having HIV at the time was. If you want to do another live version, you should do the entire Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence epic or Sacrificed Sons from Score. They even includes a full live orchestra which really adds an incredible richness to the sound that just can't be replicated.
