Vince Pazera so good! My eyes teared up and goosebumps on learning to live. So proud of James to have overcome 10 years of bad vocal performances at this time (1994-2004).

James was singing a lot better in the mid 2000s, than late 90s to early 00s. He nailed Learning to Live here better than in Scenes from New York 👌

James sounds very close here to his good 90s performances! You can hear he still sounded like a chicken on some high parts but was reasonably much less than later years. Trial of tears is sung perfectly!

I can't believe how good LaBrie sounds here. I mean, it's the same year Live at Budokan and When Dream and Day Reunite (yuck) were made...

About To Crash...wow...LaBrie is singing near-perfectly in key. Not just that, the tone of his voice is actually pretty damn good. He's a fucking anomaly that man, I swear to god HAHAHA.

Also, give me this short haired/minimal bearded Petrucci any day over the cringey, Dad Rock Petrucci of the modern day.

He's good at the Orlando 2000 I want to upload next. He's been wildly inconsistent since the food poisoning thing happened, and goes through periods of temporary improvement, followed by the inevitable decline.

The fact that DT were clearly capable of consciously creating a more "progressive" setlist and identifying songs in their catalogue that embodied this softer sound, suggests to me that they're very much aware of this side of their DNA but have abandoned it; it is the side of their identity they need to revisit IMO, and forsake this endless technical wankery and "heavy" sound they've churned out album after album. I fucking adore Trial of Tears and wish they would explore that fusion'y/proggy sound more. They proclaim to still incorporate all 3 of their "sounds" into every album i.e. heavy, progressive and melodic, but I've heard absolutely NOTHING like Trial of Tears since 6DOIT. I'd love another Falling Into Infinity frankly.

The Astonishing consciously tried to tap into the "soft" or maybe even "progressive" side of the band, but failed because the songs were so cheesy and repetitive. It could very well be that as John Petrucci is getting older, it's easier for him to "chug" on the guitar all the time, and avoid more intricate passages, but then again, I did not listen to "Distance" or "A View" very thoroughly.

what a weird setlist

The crowd seems really empty in this show? A shame since James was in good form. I never understood why he can sound good in audience bootlegs like this but shows like Budokan, from the same year, sound dismal.

I was at this show - NO ONE showed up until right before YES came on. I loved this show so much though - one of the great memories I have from back home.

I think it's a mixture of things. Afaik most live albums they put out are at the tail ends of their tours, so at that point James has been singing the fuck out of his voice for months. If you instead search for the concerts at the first legs of the tours he usually sounds much much better. This and time always passing, the vocal injury back in 94 had its part too for sure.
