@@MrDick-kz8qcboth men are amazing drummers. I've always been into Mangini since the extreme days. Of course when Dream and Day Unite came out it was around the same time frame so I've always liked Portnoy too. My favorite DT albums are with Mangini though. Lost Not Forgotten should have won an award too lol.

@@elcidcampeador9629 Portnoy's pocket is stellar... his dynamics and complementary drumming are better. Not that Mangini doesn't have those things at an insanely high level, but not there with MP. I've been listening to their music since 2008, when I was 15. The way for the first time I heard Six Degrees was just mind-boggling. Totally something fresh, different and unique. I have listened to bands like Nightwish, Evergrey, Ayreon and lots of other metal/rock bands, but DT is simply level or two beyond any band or composer I have heard :) Was so happy to see them live after 8 years in January in Poland - the show was very very good and I don't care that much about LaBrie's current voice capabilities. But DT is like an old wine - sometimes you have to stop listening to them for a while, because you might feel sick because of it.

Dream Theater - "The Alien" lyrics [Verse 1] Look beyond the Earth, heading set for the stars Interplanetary, some are near, some are far Terraform a new world, survival for mankind Options but a few, we are running out of time Should you climb aboard A voyage, the first of its kind Ready to explore All that you've known left behind [Chorus 1] Our Holy Grail Now redefined! Our purpose, a thread Weaving through time! Now with the means to expand Life beyond here Digital man Alien, changed forever! New found world in the stars! [Verse 2] Understand the meaning Certain we'll extend the scale of consciousness Woman, child and man! Multi planet species out amongst the stars Not stuck in and around Who and what we are Time to climb aboard! Countdown to takeoff on time Systems are online! (Five, four, three, two) Farewell to all humankind (One) [Chorus 2] Our Holy Grail Clearly defined! Our purpose, a thread Weaving through time! Now with the means to expand Life beyond here Digital man Alien, changed forever! New found world, here we are! [Instrumental Break] [Chorus 3] Our Holy Grail Clearly defined! Our purpose, a thread Weaving through time! Now with the means to expand Our Holy Grail Read between the lines! One purpose, one thread Weaving through time! Now with the means to expand! [Outro] I am the alien Out here in the stars We'll search 'til we find! No matter how far A far better world For all human race And beyond!

I have never been this addicted to a Dream Theater single. The quality of this song is so high that my anticipation for the rest of the album is higher than any album in the past. I'm so glad I decided to randomly buy the Octavarium album back in 2005 when I was working at Circuit City. I had no idea what the band sounded like. All I knew, being a guitar player, was that John Petrucci was in the band so it had to be good. The day I bought that album was the day my musical life changed forever. Dream Theater has been such a huge part of my life since then and they have actually helped me get through some very hard times. I remember a story about how Ian Gillan started losing his range but kept trying to hit those high notes. Similar to an degree with Geoff Tate. People, have in mind that the first song DT release for their new album is always the more 'accesible' for the public in general. With Distance Over Time we had Untethered angel first, that was a good song but a bit generic, and then, when the full album came out, Pale Blue Dot and At wits End were the highlights. This song alone could be a highlight from this new album, since it's an epic and it seems like a 2nd part of Pale Blue Dot. Well, we've to wait until October for the rest of the album.

This is the DT sound I've missed so much. Complex, technical, and awesome. I feel like we're finally hearing Mangini's style as he's really settled into this new family with his new brothers in metal. I don't want to start any sort of Portnoy vs Mangini debate, but in the old Portnoy days you could hear how he would let loose and not be afraid to get very technical and take liberties while everything held together. I just feel like we're starting to hear some more of that freedom from Mangini now. Some people are saying that this sounds like a "lot of the DT that we used to know", and I'm asking you if that's such a bad thing? I fell in love with this band for that sound and that style. I can't get that fix anywhere else. The self-titled DT album was actually a miss for me, and I own every album. I'm excited for this one. Great job guys!

To the naysayers; Sorry, but as good as Portnoy was he now can't return. If Mangini sounds like this on the rest of the album Portnoy couldn't play these parts. Maybe could play them with a little more groove, as some of you say, but the speed Mangini has not only in sticking but also his movement around the kit is beyond MP’s ability. He sounds like he's at the gym working out, hitting as many things as he can in each bar. It feels pointless. But to be fair, Portnoy got there way ahead of him. Incredibly skilled drummers who seem to measure musical quality by their speed and precision, and by their incredible memory of what goes where. But why? Go somewhere guys! But tbh, I think this whole song is long and tedious, with very little in the way of dynamic range, except toward the end. Are they lost in their own cleverness? I’ve been re-listening to all the albums before the new one drops and I’m up to half of the self-titled now and the mix is worse than ADTOE for drums and bass and overall really. At first, it sounded like it was made in a Random DT Song Generator. Gets better after multiple listens. Great production (finally!) and brilliant job by Mangini. Some stuff got old and sounds uninspired (this must be their 50th song with open-string-chugs verses). Vocal phrasing in the first verse is weird as hell. Looking forward to the full album!

People are talking more about drums since this is the first time we hear such a masterpiece from Mangini since his inclusion in DT. I don't know what had stopped him earlier to build his parts in that way but I think Mangini has sorted out the issues. We know John Petrucci, everything he composes turns to a 💎. I can't wait for the complete album too. Cheers 🍻 mate

I love it everything about the entire song, including the Mangini drumming. The only thing I'm not too fond of is his choice of snare and to some extent, entire kit. It's a bit flat. The entire band sound reinvigorated. They showed glimpses on the last album but I think Petrucci's solo album and the recent LT3 has given the band a new kick in the cods! Easily the best song they have recorded in over a decade. Has a lot in common with DoT but it also has all of the best melodic elements of Black Clouds but mostly the first disc of six degrees. Fkn love it!

07:47 What an emotional ending! The lyrics are so meaningful. We have always thought that aliens are an intelligent race that visit Earth. But in the future, the human race will turn into an alien; those who will travel through the stars with the sole purpose of finding an ideal world for our species. That is why the cinematics at the end deal with the exploration of Mars; Curiosity, Opportunity rovers appear; because we already started space exploration to find a world to settle in. Incredible mix, masterpiece! Cannot wait till hear the full álbum!

I tend to agree with you. I don't like the fact he's getting so much sh*t... My only problem with James' vocals these days is that he can't hit the very high notes anymore, and when he does, the vowels all sound the same (which is a natural and universal tendency when singing loud and high, but particularly true of JL's vocals...). Age probably doesn't help... Even though he will still have to sing the old songs in the future, I think he should now rely on a slightly lower range as well as other techniques (falsetto, screaming, using FXs, etc.). Anyway, agreed, he deserves respect for his performances with DT and solo projects.
