Two years ago i asked my father who was 82 years old to hear this song with me. He said to me that he felt so peaceful and emotional hearing Petrucci's solo. I isolated this solo and used it as a ringtone for my father's number at my mobile phone. My father died a few months later at my hands due to cardiac arrest. This song means so much to me.

The solo at the end is not only beautiful and well-constructed, it's functional. It's like Petrucci is telling his friend "here, I know writing these verses just reopened a wound...I don't have more words for you but let this sound wash over you, dress that wound, and give you some time to process, to grieve, and to heal."

that solo is just world class. i don't think there's another like it really. it is so perfectly crafted and special. the whole song is so genuine and beautiful, then the solo just takes it into the stratosphere. it is extremely technical but somehow more emotional than most music you will ever hear. you can tell he took care to make it perfect for his friend.

I first listened to this song the day the album was released and thought it was so powerful and emotional. Years later after my father passed away, I cannot listen to this without tears streaming down my face. The way music can draw your inner emotions says to me that it is the most powerful art form, personally. Thanks for this post. It struck a chord with me.

Thank you SO much for getting some context before you guys listened to this for the first time. There's some value in completely blind reactions, but I've been looking for reactions to this song for months and NOBODY "got" this song quite like you did and gave it the credit it deserves. I feel like I can stop searching now haha. It's not what some DT superfans feel is "true" Dream Theater but it's far my favorite of their songs.

I just replied to comment this statement, but I'll say it again. This is the most important song of my life. When he said "the two score and a year we had..." it hit me, because if you flip it, and say "one score and two years we had" is exactly when my father died. It's been 11 years and to this day and this viewing, I cannot get through this song without openly weeping. Only few people will know how lost I feel without him. And Mike Portnoy is the closest to put into words how I feel about my dad dying. I live each day by the line "my heart is bleeding bad, but I'll be okay. Your spirit guides my life each day." I can go on for hours why this is a perfect representation. But I think I've made my point.

I think the most important thing one can take away from this song, is how mundane the “best of times” really are. It’s not the big, spectacular grand gestures that Mike remembers and talks about fondly, it’s the everyday moments that happen all the time. It’s the fact that his father was there to share these experiences with him that make them special.

Preferebally the live version from the record "Live at Roseland Ballroom". The song is about when Portnoy lost his mother in a plane crash. Read the back story and have the lyrics close. I promise no eyes will stay dry. The live version I have in mind also have a little fun musical twist to it. Higly recommended!! Keep up the good work 🤘

My relationship with this band is basically a story of my own life, and quite emotional, I'm now 51 years old and I have been with Dream Theater since the beginning. Please search deeper into your souls and feel the emotions in the lyrics and music. Peace and Love, and just choose to be a good person.
