Lyrics: Drifting in a far off place I roam the countryside Seeking wings of thought Waiting in the blind Enchanted and transfixed I am pulled into the still By a backward ticking clock Held against my will Illusions turn to dust Scatter to the wind Like dreaming while awake Signals in the mist Altered state of mind Stars in the abyss Transcending time Midnight in the garden Digging for a spark Where seeds of inspiration Lie buried in the dark Attention starts to wander As the poet lifts his pen And the critic from within Is silenced once again Limits leave no trace Ashes in the rain Lost and far away Signals in the mist Altered state of mind Stars in the abyss Transcending time Signals in the mist Stars in the abyss Euphoric obsession Without conscious intention Being pulled by the current On a vessel steered by someone else Transcending time

This song and album in general, it feels like Mike Mangini got more freedom to experiment and use the whole kit. He simply sounds great, and has lots of personality in his playing. In general I always loved the way Dream Theater had this variety in drum kit sound. Unlike many other bands, where perhaps the drummer was more talented than Portnoy, but the drums in general sounded uninspiring because they had their drum kit was quite limited. Despite having a lot of drums, they would use 10% of their kit most of the time. And several rock/metal drummers also suffer from having zero dynamics, meaning that they would hit every single drum and cymbal with the same intensity, making it all sound monotone. Mangini when he just joined DT suffered from this at first, despite Mangini being an extremely talented drummer. In part it is the mixing, but most of it is Mangini as well. He uses so much more of his kit now, and plays with the dynamics. It makes it all sound more loose and with more personality. I think it is the reason people said he sounded like a drum machine, not because he was bad but because he lacked lots of dynamics. But now, I do not think anyone can se he sounds robotic in here, in fact it is the oposite. In this album, he sounds awesome, he has always been an amazing drummer, this was just the piece that was missing. You can hear everything here, how he chooses an specific drums for a part of the song, and then another, how he goes through a variety of cymbals. It has a lot of ghost notes, and each hit has a deliberate amount of weight to it to give variety in volume. In general it seems like Mangini is having more space to express himself, and I love it. Again, not to trash Mangini, because this is something that happens with most drummers, specially in metal and rock.

Interesting point. Maybe today's drummers get taught in music school to play "tastefully", like a funk drummer, and stick mostly to the snare, kick, and hi-hat - even when playing metal, which is all about overdoing it. Whereas Portnoy's drumming heroes would have been Peart, Bonham, Bruford, Phil Collins, probably Buddy Rich - guys who played a lot, but made it fit the song.
