Just came across this. I worked for a farmer who re-powered when new generations came out. He had two 4850s and two 4960s. The 4960s were plastic pieces of junk and I couldn't keep the ACs running, in Florida. The 4850s were a dream to drive. Nothing was beeping or falling off in your lap. I bought my own big crows foot wrench because the hydraulic line under the front axle kept leaking on one. I had owned two 4250s when I had owned a farm previously. Loved them. My brother still has our 1971 3020.

ROAD TRIP! Thorp isn't too far away from where my mom's side of the family originated. My grandparents met and married in Boyd, and there are some shoestring relatives still living there today. Apparently, one of my great uncles operated a creamery there when my mom was growing up. A few friends of mine actually had a family farm very close by there. Thanks for the ride-along and window shopping! That yellow semi tractor was nice.

Listen, I have lived in the area you traveled here(NE WI) my entire 40 years of life, grew up on a dairy farm(Dad got out of farming in the late 90's) and you need to know this- Swiderski implement is a very large operation, that offers a very large variety of equipment and tractors in both age and make. If you take time to look at their inventory over time, you will find they offer an unusual amount of "overhauled" tractors. Some seem to hae less hours then one would think for an overhaul, some many more. Growing up we used to get the trading post farmer's newspaper, and Swiderski had a full page ad. They had all kinds of tractors, lots of Olivers, some Molines, MF- remember this is the 80's and in this area the dealerships for those brands were very, very scarce. So Swiderski was one of few to service them. Thing is, they would have say, an Oliver 1850 let's say. "Recent overhaul". Then you would see the hour meter had litterally rolled over. Same with countless IH tractors, machines with 9000+ hours on them with "recent overhaul". Then you would hear stories of people that bought one of these overhauled tractors, put 500 hours on them and rear ends blew out, PTO quit working, or if you were lucky, the supposedly overhauled engine would go and you could go to bat about defective work etc. Remember now, tractors in the 60's weren't built to run 12000 hours before a major overhaul. Most made it to 5000, maybe 7000 and then you OH'd it as a precaution so you didn't throw a rod through the block. Could you find a good unit? Sure. Was it parked right next to a unit that had been overhauled twice and had 11000 hours on it and shiny new paint? Sure. Was that parked next to a tractor that had been under water in some flood down south(or right up in this neck of the woods in the 90's) and dredged out and cleaned up? Sure. So when you see that nice looking, super clean JD there you like, just remember, it could have been sitting under 20 feet of water at some point, it may have had a half-arsed OH done so it didn't smoke anymore, you might get it home, run it one season and go to use it in the spring and find out the powershift for the first 3 gears is failing suddenly, etc. or you might take it home and get a really good deal. THAT is Swiderski, it's a gamble you have to decide if you want to take, if the price is right. you know what they say, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" There is a reason they want 20 grand more for the other tractor with tons more hours on it- that one was bought at an auction and not dredged out of the river in Texas. Just don't get ripped off. look for mud where mud shouldn't be. look for water lines on the sides(if it was in say, 4 feet of water you might see a trace of where the water height was on the tractor) look for shiny new paint, it was put there to hide somthing not make it extra nice. Just don't get ripped off.

I grew up on a farm in central wisconsin in the 80's and 90's and you have just described the general consensus of "wheelin dealin" Al Swiderski to a "t" !

We ran a 4960 for years on our farm as our tillage tractor and I loved the thing. Sold it when we upgraded to a newer tractor so we could handle other jobs on the farm then just tillage to the neighboring county. Only major issue we had was the engine blew on it but it was due to the fact that one of the engine air filters wasn’t screwed in all the way when it was replaced but it had 1100 on the overhaul and don’t remember before the engine blew

4960 is a solid tractor ryan! We had a quad range 4760 for 15 years, and man it was a good one! The 4560 and 4760 were both sold with quad range option on the 2wd, but not the 4wd, and 4960s are all powershift. There's your trivia for the day!

What’s the difference between quad range and power shift transmission. I know nothing about tractors, I’ve always been interested in them but just recently want to know more about them and learn something new
@Rosso_Dabosso5 жыл бұрын
To be very simple, quad range has two shifters and powershift has one. In quad, you have A B C and D on one shifter, then 1 2 3 4 and r1 and r2. On powershift, all the gears are just all in the same column, and you shift through each one

I'm with you on the 60 series. I liked them. Somebody just put a 4760 up for sale up the highway from me. Brought back memories from my late teens. Farm I worked on traded 4430 for 4760. And yes they did come with quad range. This 4760 was first tractor with quad range transmission. I hated it. It was so hard to shift. Then a few years later I climbed up in a 7800 with quad range and it shifted pretty easy. So maybe it was something wrong with it in 4760. Other than that I really liked the 4760.

My Dad and I own two 4440's a 4630 a 4850 and a 4960 all power shifts. My Dad and Grandfather were both certified John Deere mechanics. My Grandfather said when Deere came out with the power shift they called it idiot proof and on the first demo tractor they had warn the tred off the back tires shifting it on asphalt agressively with no transmission problems. Quads to shift from A,B,C range you have to stop or after a while you will have to rebuild your clutch packs which calls for you to split the tractor twice to build. I'm 32 my Dad's 57 and my grandfather is 88 and we have worked on maybe a hand full of power shifts but we have worked on dozens of quads oh and power shifts are cheaper to work on also only have to split once. Most big complaints about power shifts is the jaring shifting gears but when they changed from the 8 to a 15 speed with the 50 series it's a lot smoother.

@jeffgixer51856 жыл бұрын
Once the ear go out of the head the feeder house chains pick them up and throw them into a cylinder that rotates over 1000 rpm, the ear has a small space it's jammed through crushing it. It then goes into the separators. That depends if you have a rotary which is a huge rotating drum, or just the inline system which uses shakers to separate the grain from the garbage. Grain ends up in the grain tank and garbage out the back. Of course there are a lot of moving parts.

It has a lot to do with care of machine. You can take any make of tractor and turn it into a crap pile or even worse have a dirty dealer set you up for failure by falsely servicing your tractor. My uncle's tractor needed serviced so dealer dropped pan tourched a hole in oil suction line, cut oil presure wire, and put tape over cut to make it look like it was still connected. It spun a bearing on the 358 german diesel. Wait you will see equipment prices drop. Not many farmers left, just look at tractor house listings, markets flooded.
