This was the Oberpostdirektion in northeast of Hamburg. For the postal system in Germany changed, it was no longer needed. They saw no chance to turn it into an Appartment building, because they expected not to find enough customers for this. And the space was otherwise needed.

Opinions vary, but that´s one ugly building. I´m sure it looked good on paper, and the architecture had its place in history, but those concrete buildings from the 1930´s and up become eyesores in mere decades. This one has that Clockwork Orange vibe. Typical 70´s monstrocity.

The demolition of a family home in Germany costs between 10,000 and 25,000 euros. When demolishing larger buildings, the cost is estimated at 50-100 euros per square meter as a rule of thumb. Orders of this magnitude are advertised publicly and the cheapest bidder is awarded the contract. A blasting can even be more expensive, since a lot of preparations have to be made here, which can often take up to six months. Conventional demolition is often faster and therefore cheaper. In addition, in this case the city of Hamburg decides how the demolition is to be carried out.
