I've been pushing for "Clueless" and "10 Things I Hate About You"... which aren't necessarily, like, under the radar gems, but they're not that common, plus they're right up her alley. Yeah, when a reactor does one specific type of movie, suddenly everybody wants him/her to do EVERY SINGLE MOVIE like that. "Oh, you did Schindler's List? How about you do EVERY Holocaust movie?" Um... no. She wants to grow her channel with a diverse selection of movies; she wants to watch a variety of movies because she's a human being; and holy shit, that would be fucking grim. (... she did the Back to the Future trilogy though.)

@@robertreichle1 Covering the big ones (the MCU, Game of Thrones, LotR) ensures engagement in a way that hitting underappreciated gems doesn't. So I get it. That being said, I definitely think we, as a community, need to do a better job of not being so predictable with our recommendations. I'm trying to suggest things that are popular enough to help grow her channel, are underappreciated enough to help her channel stand out, and are movies that I expect she'll love (like, as I said, "Clueless" and "10 Things I Hate About You") or at least movies I think she'd appreciate and enjoy even if they aren't quite up her alley like those are (perhaps well-written action/comedies like "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" or "Lucky Number Slevin"; "V for Vendetta" might be more up her alley than I thought given her positive response to The Hunger Games, although that's not exactly underappreciated but I think some compromises can be made when a movie is good enough). I dabble in checking out only two other react channels, and one did Firefly; I think about Farscape and how much I loved that show, and how popular it was (and still is), and how anybody who liked Firefly would surely also like Farscape, and how it should resonate because it helped shape "Guardians of the Galaxy". I think something like that would be *PERFECT* because it's so popular and beloved, but is underappreciated by react channels; reacting to that would stand out and grow her channel in a way that MCU reacts, or GoT reacts couldn't hope to achieve. (The latter may fly under the radar because so many others are doing it, but Farscape doesn't get enough love... but it's also not some niche show that people haven't heard of.) However, it's 4 seasons long, 22 episodes each, plus 2 movies. So... 90 episodes to commit to one show, no matter how good? I think it's worth considering because *every* Farscape fan would take note, and that would definitely help grow her channel... but ultimately I'd expect that that's too much of a time commitment to one thing. But I bring it up to serve as an example of the type of content I strive to suggest. "Psych" is similar: beloved, perhaps a bit underappreciated, fun and funny as hell... but again, so many seasons/episodes. Ditto "Community". (I'm also not sure to what degree "Community" would resonate with Mary; I'm guessing too many of the references would go over her head; she'd probably enjoy some episodes a lot, but with the cultural differences, I'd think "Psych" a safer bet.) "Life" and "Keen Eddie" are shorter, and are easily 2 of my favorite 5 shows of all-time... but from what I can tell, there's not the fan base for those the way there is for the previous shows I mentioned. "Veronica Mars" maybe? I'm a bigger fan of tv shows - you noticed? - because they can take their time in telling a story, and develop characters and relationships... if I went with one for Mary, I think I'd go for VM (at the very least the first 2 seasons; probably the 3rd as well? And if the 3rd, then the movie... that's all) but she's wrapped up in GoT and the Mandalorian (even though it's currently between seasons) and I'd rather not put any more tv shows on her plate (if I did though... VM; I think she'd really enjoy Veronica, and her relationship with you-know-who - or you don't, but no spoilers - and she'd LOVE Veronica's relationship with her father. But... oh well.) Other than those movies I mentioned at the top, I struggle to think of great recommendations (I need to look through my DVD binder); my favorite movies (that I didn't mention/that she hasn't already done) - Batman, Fight Club, Se7en - I don't think would appeal to her enough to be worth her while. And finally... as obvious as it is, I still want to see her react to the MCU. I think she'd absolutely LOVE Captain America. And the Guardians of the Galaxy. And Iron Man is an asshole (I really think the movies are more generous to him than he deserves) but a charming one, so I'd be interested to see her take on him. And Spiderman. So... sorry, but I'm pretty basic in that respect.

She also did "In Bruges" on her patreon. A pretty obvious suggestion for her but... it's a really good movie too, so sometimes it's best to embrace "obvious". And she liked it, which was cool. I was unsure how she'd take it given how dark it is and how sensitive she is, but she really liked it and appreciated the dark humor, so that's cool. (I guess not surprising, given she really enjoys GoT despite how obscene it can be, but I hadn't watched a lot of her reacts before I discovered that one; "Princess Bride", the Star Wars OT - prequels too, I think - and that might've been it.)

There is literally a world and over a century of extraordinary cinema to be discovered that inevitably one has not seen. Because no one alive has seen every great film there is potentially to see. An exciting prospect of discovery to be turned on to a variety of unique films. Instead most movie reaction channels copy each other with the safest of movie choices they know will get views. The number of great films out there throughout time, there is no reason any movie reactor should be on some trend the movie of the week to react to. Imagine someone seeing “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” for the first time. Gary Oldman’s performance and that insane make up. The Martin Scorsese film “Hugo”. A beautiful artfully crafted film exploring the beginnings of cinema and the value in preserving classic art. Adult animated movies such as “Heavy Metal”, “Wizards”, “American Pop”, and then “Cool World”. “Fear and Loathing Las Vegas” “Natural Born Killers” “Apocalypto” “Hellboy” “Big Fish” “Sin City” A variety of unique standout films. A variety of films movie reactors aren’t even touching.

This is one of my favorite movies. The more you know about 1920s writers and artists the better the movie is. “Who wants to fight” is exactly something Hemingway would’ve said. Zelda Fitzgerald was a manic depressive. She died in a fire at a mental institution in the 1930s.

Other Woody Allen movies you might like, since you liked this one so much: The Purple Rose of Cairo Broadway Danny Rose Annie Hall Sleeper This filmmaker lost a lot of fans due to things that happened in his personal life, but if you watched one of his, I figured I would go ahead and recommend others. Broadway Danny Rose is my favourite of his.

The greater flaw in your logic is that you assume I "believe" it heroifies a pedophile. It can't be pedophilia cause in the movie the affair was 17, which means even in USA it is legal (in NY where the movie takes place). You are dreaming from A to Z, nothing is valid what you say. And you are even admitting a felony here: Receiving stolen property is always illegal. And a copy of a BR is stolen property and you are a part of the distribution as a receiver. So happy you did this one. Please keep reacting to stuff others don't. As far as genres go, the 'timeslip' genre is my favourite of all genres. There's a great novel called 'Time & Again' by Jack Finney which is about a man who imagines himself back in time to 1880's New York and falls in love. It's a love-letter to the past with eyes wide open, as he balances his belief that there was more humanity back then with the fact that a lot of people died fast and young from disease and poverty. Still, he falls in love. It's a great read and the method he employs to go back in time is very unique. As for this film - love it. I'm a fan of that period as well, especially the musicians and photographers. Kind of got stoked seeing Man Ray, now if only Lee Miller had been there too...

Well this is a wonderful change of things. Beautiful review. If you want another Woody Allen beauty to 'cuddle' up with (on your own or edited for us), I can not recommend enough that you try Radio Days. It's all mini/short stories threaded throughout a childs' recollection of their youth (very much like A Christmas Story)

Great reaction! A fantastic film in my opinion. Several years ago it was on a pay channel I get, and I watched it over and over. Then I bought the DVD so I could watch it some more. Brilliant script! My only wish is that Allen had been young enough to play the role of Gil himself. Owen Wilson did his best Woody Allen impersonation but only Woody can truly play himself. When Owen is speaking I can almost see Woody playing the part--it's a strange doubling effect, due to having watched so many Woody Allen films so many times over so many years. Seeing the 1920's celebrities is amazing, and the parts are played so well. I especially like the scene with Dali, Man-Ray, and Luis Buñuel: "I see a photograph; I see a film; I see a rhinoceros!"

I absolutely adore Whatever Works also by Woody Allen, there is such a vibe and energy that really gets me, I highly recommend it! Also Big Fish by Tim Burton. Otherwise, still on the romantic side there is About Time, as well as The Silver Lining Playbook...

Definitely rewatch the entire thing, the nuance of the historical periods is great - to me it's easily the best Woody Allen film I've seen, and nothing else Owen Wilson has even put a toe near has come close to this. This was also done in 2011, so right as Tom Hiddleston's career blew up with Thor releasing only the month prior. Not to mention Alison Pill and Corey Stoll too.

Alright, fess up. Who else took forever to realize Paul was played by national treasure Michael Sheen? IN MY DEFENSE, the past handfuls of times I watched this, it was BEFORE I became a Michael Sheen fan, therefore didn't have the capability of recognizing him. But in this particular case, it was entirely because of his flawless accent. Never batted an eye, not once. I shall never question the man's talent again.

A few movies back, I started noticing that EVERY "Serious-era" Woody Allen movie from the late 80's-early 90's on either A) is set in the 20's-30's, B) homages movies from the 30's, C) is about modern characters sentimental for the 20's-30's, or D) has contemporary NYC socialites acting like characters in a 30's Carole Lombard movie. After the scandals, Woody just sort of retreated from the modern outside world. :(

If you are feeling sad for him your sympathy is sadly misplaced when it should solely be for his adopted children. His was not a 'scandal' as you call it - Allen's own son literally accused him of abusing his adopted sister. It's one thing to appreciate Allen's artistic contributions. These films are things made of the work of many, many people from the rest of the film crew to the actors and should not be tainted with his personal acts. It's another thing entirely to discard those acts in a sympathetic fashion merely because his films are good. I'd say the same thing for Roman Polanski - excepting that Polanski at least had a severe tragedy in his life that clearly broke him*, I have never heard of any such event in Allen's life that would remotely explain such behaviour at all. *in case you didn't know Polanski's 8 month pregnant wife Sharon Tate was one of the 5 victims of the Manson family murders in 1969.

I know I don't know much about symbolism and such, but here's what this made me think. I don't claim this to be true in any way shape or form: The ending made me think of Gil's earlier line about how people in the past didn't have any antibiotics. Such an odd word to use, but as someone who's always overprocessing everything, I stopped to think about how he was using the word. Antibiotics are designed to help with infections. But the infection in question here isn't physical. It's being unsatisfied with your present, instead aching for a time you weren't born in, and the longer you stay in that state, the worse it gets. To me, Gil was actually onto something, he just didn't quite word it right: they don't have someone to share their love for a golden age with. And then, surprise, Gil does. Sure the ending is left ambiguous, but the idea is still there. Instead of chasing the past, he's enjoying it with someone in the present.

Please Mary, please please please add "7 Days in Hell" to your list of movies to get around to. Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) is in it and it is so, so good. Not terribly popular the way Star Wars or GoT is, so it may not help your channel grow the way something like that would, but nobody else is doing it; I think there's enough of a cult appreciation for it that a lot of fans of it would discover your channel and would absolutely give you a chance because nobody else is reacting to that movie. More importantly: it's so goddamn funny. And Jon Snow in it is... *chef's kiss* he's so good.
