In today’s video I’m watching Woody Allen’s 2011 fantasy comedy „Midnight In Paris”, starring Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hiddleston, Alison Pill, Léa Seydoux and many more.
Have fun!

24:40 I just love how in this scene the alienation between Gil to Inez and her parents is visually apparent with how they all are in bath robes and Gil isn't, as if it wasn't obvious from the dialogue throughout the film, but now it's visually obvious.

About the poetic dialogue; Woody Allen used actual quotes from the various artists he put in the film. His tribute to them.

This movie is pure magic to me, and you’re right about the lack of chemistry between McAdams’ and Wilson’s characters. He’s going for pretty while she’s going for money that she can manipulate. No great love on either side, truth be told.

My literature teacher showed this movie to us in class back in 2013 (or around that time). I remember liking the picture at the time but never really looked into it after that. After 10 years I was strolling through Netflix and saw that movie being recommended so I gave it another look. Instantly fell in love with it. I have that same sentiment you describe towards it at the end, there’s simply nothing like this film. Such an interesting heroes journey in a gorgeous setting but being told in very smooth and light-hearted way, it’s impossible not to like. Not sure if there’s is a movie so technically sound, so well produced and directed while also being such an easy an fun watch. Does anyone know any other movie like this?

I love this movie. The lead character’s yearning for a different life in a world of imagination is similar to what Woody presented in The Purple Rose of Cairo. But I like this film more.

Also, I want to say how much I enjoyed your understanding of the film. I think that most of the younger reactors on KZbin would not know who the artists are that are portrayed and they would easily miss the heart of this movie.

I've watched that film dozens of times, but only now have I noticed that Hemingway, in a conversation about true passion and the fear of death, talks about seeing it in Africa among rhinoceros hunters... In light of this, the fact that Dali constantly talks about rhinoceroses when Gil talks about his feelings for Adriana no longer seems so absurd.

Shandor! Start at Woody’s beginning n witness his artistic growth! It’s beautiful to have watched! It may be hard to realize, but there was a time before the accusations started flying when America was in love with Woody! We could all witness true artistic evolution. Like Dylan and the Beatles we could see his growth. I’m not sure, but his turning point may have been Sam or possibly LOVE AND DEATH! But he has phases! ❤❤

This is one of my favorite movies. The more you know about the American expatriate community in Paris in the 1920s the better the movie is. I thought all of the actors portrayals of the different artists were spot on. I especially liked the characters of Ernest Hemingway and Zelda Fitzgerald. One last thing I would like to say, is I see a rhinoceros, no, two rhinoceroses.

I agree that while this isn't Woody's best film, it's a thoroughly enjoyable romantic film. I've watched it maybe three times and I never tire of it. And the idea behind it, of how we romanticize the past to escape from the problems of now, is a profound thought.

Midnight in Paris is a very good movie, but probably not in Woody’s top five films., Annie Hall and Manhattan being tops in my mind. Although other people will have different favorites and could make compelling arguments for them. His back catalogue is impressive.

I thought if a characters name was spoken in the film and said character had no lines just a cameo , then it should be another real individual from that era. After Gill was dancing with a party woman participant, Adriana told Gill who was his dancing partner, Djuna Barnes . His reply was something like 'that makes sense, she was leading'. She had a career that wasn't spoken much of. A modernist literature journalist. Writing some stories of lesbian fiction. How brilliant that she made a living back then, when I'm sure there was much much more criticism & taboo. Now I'm looking up names of characters mentioned. Amazing that most were true to life individuals. A couple films that used names that were relevant to the movie - Forrest Gump, Young Frankinstien KEEP EXPLORING AND THANKS FOR YOUR CHOICES IN FILM
