Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas Trailer

Set almost entirely in a Chinese restaurant, "Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas" is an offbeat, irreverent musical documentary that tells the story of a group of Jewish songwriters, including Irving Berlin, Mel Tormé, Jay Livingston, Ray Evans, Gloria Shayne Baker and Johnny Marks, who wrote the soundtrack to Christianity’s most musical holiday. It’s an amazing tale of immigrant outsiders who became irreplaceable players in pop culture’s mainstream - a generation of songwriters who found in Christmas the perfect holiday in which to imagine a better world, and for at least one day a year, make us believe in it.

To answer the question: why didn't Jewish composers write famous Chanukah songs? Chanukah is a traditional Jewish religious holiday and there already are many beautiful traditional melodies for religious Jews. There was no reason for Jewish composers to use their time and talents to write Chanukah songs for a small group of Jews and lots of reasons to write Christmas songs for the gigantic market of the Christian general public. Writing Christmas songs was a way for those talented musicians to announce to the world that they had arrived and were assimilated into American culture.

Nobody stopped any Christian from writing Christmas carols, and in fact most of them are written by Christians for Christians. Christmas has become a secular holiday and therefore there is no reason why non-Christians can not celebrate the holiday with song.
