Could Sams dream represent maybe a happy death long after the war??? Like he survives, returns to his castle with Gilly, lives a happy life serving Jon and this is their feast when they do eventually die...

I think you are on track with one exception. Running with your theory, Sam's dream is there to contrast with the other dreams of feasts as the feast of the living. All the others have dead guests and indicate who will die or has died. Sam's doesn't have anyone dead except Lord Mormant, who could be an exception for several reasons or maybe he assumes it's Jeor when it's actually an older Jorah. "The living have no place at the fest of the dead"..... which would indicate that there are feasts for the living. It would also serve nicely for GRRM to not make it as clear. Nice theory overall!

Sorry, just had a couple more thoughts. It does seem like there is a family theme here. Sam is with his "brothers" of the watch, with Jeor kind of being a fatherly figure and Gilly there functionally as his wife. They specifically mention his father, who disowned him, is not there. John hears specifically Ned and Rob. Tyrion is with his father, who is actually proud of him for once, Jamie, and the woman he is currently partnered with (in terms of affections and protections). Cersei, the family member that he hates, is not there. Theon is sitting with the Starks, the people he truly considers family despite his blood. I also find it interesting that there is a feast for each main area we talk about: beyond the wall with the nights watch, the north with Theon/John, and the South with Tyrion.

It’s interesting that no place has been set for Jon. Wouldn’t a place be set for those who one day will die? Theon does arrive to the feast before Robb and he definitely doesn’t die before Robb. Although that could be a reference to Theon’s metaphorical death and foreshadowing his Reek faze. But I do find it interesting that Jon is barred from entering the hall by a wall. Who in folklore were barred from entering the realm of the dead? Ghosts.
@luke66126 жыл бұрын
Sort of, yes. If you were buried in the ground, it was believed you could rise again as a creature, sometimes referred to as ghosts. If you were set for Valhalla, you were delivered by ship, not buried. Bonus fact, it was said the risen creatures could be destroyed by burning them.

Maybe Tyrion dreaming of Marillion at the dream feast was to foreshadow his killing of Simon Silver Tongue. Tyrion couldn't put a face or name to the singer that he would kill (via orders to Bronn), so he imposed Marillion into that dream. But when the time came to fulfill the prophecy of the dream, it was actually Simon. Just a thought.

I always believed that when the head of one of the power houses leaves their seat of power and enters an area that doesn't belong to them with bad intentions or have no direct blood relation, that death and destruction comes down on that house!!! Robert went to winterfell and died, Ned went to kings landing (still baratheon territory even though they still had storms end), the Martells going to kings landing, littlefinger in winterfell, tywin in kings landing, the Starks/Tullys going to the twins, and so on!!! I think that's why a Stark must always be in winterfell, ya Ned died with a Stark in winterfell but all hell broke loose on the family and banners once Bran had to run away and abandon it, storms end went to crap after Renley died and so on!!! Even the smaller houses run into trouble, the mountain and hound in kings landing, the Manderlys with The boltons!!! The Starks mention over and over again that they keep the old ways, one of the only houses to keep the old gods, and their words have not changed in thousands of years, what if all houses had a simular statement and they were lost or changed over the years???

Excellent as usual! I really hope my least favorite theory isn't true.. Jon becoming the Night King, it could certainly tie into this.. There is no place for him at the feast because he's destined to take on that mantle.. I'm not opposed to Jon sacrificing himself and saving everyone, and I know this is GOT so we won't get a happy ending but in my opinion the only satisfying ending would involve Cersei dying (by any means/Arya, Sansa, Tyrion or Jamie) and the Night King being defeated by Jon. Taking his place certainly falls under the "bittersweet ending," but I hope that isn't it. Keep up the excellent work Gray!

Might this be everyone's version of heaven? Tyrion finally gets the approval of his father. Sam finally gets to be happy in his home. Theon needs up somewhere he can be happy. Maybe there's a difference in the origin of the dreams (just saw your video about dragon dreams today). The origins of the word "feast" stem from a few different places, one is fester which means to rot. The other more common origin is religous in nature. The feast days are days when deities are celebrated , in order for a deity to be celebrated often times one version of that deity has to die so a new acceptable version can go on, one that's both a little of the old and a little of the new. ASOIAF, in my opinion is 100% about that exact thing. Martin has taken multiple creation myths and created races of people, than pitted them against each other. And even more impressive is that with each book he blends even further those myths, so just when you think you get a grip on what something means in one chapter that very same concept expands and changes in another chapter. Forget Norse, that's a trick. There is some Norse in there but not enough within the most important plotlines of the series to really matter. The creation myths Martin actually uses are Greek, Chinese, Native American, Hindu and Celtic. The funniest part of it is he tells you over and over again that's what he's doing. How many times did you read that something had a layer of grease congealing or dripping on the surface? And then he peppers the vocabulary within each chapter to further add to his newer combined creation mythology. Theres a big reason the onion is mentioned often in the series, they have layers (just ask sherk.) But so do gods and religions. For instance before the Christian's and Jews there were Greeks, canaanites, summarians etc. They all had intertwining god and goddess myths, each myth had feast days and its own cults (or camp followers). Once Moses showed up he and his followers started telling everyone that their gods were now demons and to worship them was demon worshiping. So Bael, the harvest god than became Bael the demon, spell Bael Ba'al and add Pe'or and that same harvest god is now a shit and crevice demon. This is all very pertinent to ASOIAF. Take Arya for instance. She is a blend of the greek goddess nemesis and the Asian demon collector horse face. In the Asian mythology the demon collector even has a sword called needle. The further along you get into Arya chapters you start to see actual words from those two myths combining. She has a strong sense of right and wrong and equality, she talks about pits and the abyss (where nemesis comes from), she goes into the underworld and collects people that have lived too long (just as horse face does.) Similar combos can be picked out for everyone of the main characters. Feasts are a celebration of those combinations that have survived and brought life to something new. Kinda like a pact. And the losers that didnt make it to the new combo, if they aren't dead they are now very vengeful.

In the traditions of the old peoples of Northern Europe, there is a place for the living at the Feasts of the Dead but only in the proper season, when walls between the worlds are thin. *Halloween, (old Halloween) just like Dios De la Muertos, was a holiday where the living prepared the favorite foods of the Beloved Dead and set out portions for them.* That time of year was considered the start of WINTER, as in the books white ravens have been sent...
@Redchinesestones5 жыл бұрын
Just there's one thing about Sam's dream compared to the others: he dreams of leaving the feast. The feast ends he goes upstairs to Gilly. Theon's from your description doesn't end that way, neither does Tyrion's. If Jon doesn't have a place in the feast for the dead, then Sam is one who leaves the feast of the dead. Also in terms of location of the "feast" of the dead motif, I think we should consider characters as well. Because Sam, Jon, and Theon, they're all people who've warred, whom being a foot soldier/fighter/killer (be it for the night watch, or for their house etc) are intrinsically part of their identity. Sam is called "slayer", it's jeeringly, but also technically accurate, and like Sam, Jon literally built much of his character on the night's watch. Theo fashioned himself to be a conquestor, only to have it go as terribly as it did. It's not a stretch to think that people who've earned their self identity as fighters and soldiers would dream a feast/Valhalla sort of dream with a named locations, as death in Asoiaf is a God of many faces, so who's to say death wouldn't appear to people in the way that makes most sense to them? It's also worth noting that although Tyrion also has a feast dream, it's lack of location mirrors how being a "warrior" isn't as intrinsic to his character, yes he rages at kings landing and tywin and cerise for denouncing his efforts against Staniss (but its more so the act of, then a fight to prove he's a knight that songs are made of). Instead, we see him again and again as a man who's sharper at war with words then war with swords. Jamie, also interestingly enough ( whom this whole feast of death motif has been verbalized), doesn't seem to have feast dreams, largely because he has already abandoned notions of valor, knighthood, and Honor. He also looses his sword hand, which cripples his identity as a skilled swordsman. It makes sense for the lannister brother's in that sense to have fuzzy 'feast' dreams or none at all that are prophetic In that same sense. As that is the way death serves them best on warning (actual battles in the dark--mirroring the war they'll have to fight against the wights and white walkers(

Maybe Jon can hear them because when he died (in the show) he claims he saw nothing, maybe when he has this dream it is speaking of the fact that he will die but not fully die as he will be brought back and that’s why there was a “wall” between them hence “the living have no place with the dead” as he is still going to live. Everyone will eventually will die, except John. There's no place for be living in a feast for the dead, but here likely isn't a place for the undead either. As some have theorized; If John will take the place of the Night's King, sacrificing himself for all eternity so he can Warg all the white walkers and wires, keeping them at bay and all the living safe from them, he cants be dead. He will be like the Knights king or uncle Benjin, he will end as the new knight's King and be "undead" for all of eternity.... Just a theory...

Oh I don't think it will be in a way that we can foretell at all. It isn't in George Martin's nature. He once told that in his books there's no clear cut black and white and the enemies there are not pure evil and I think he mentioned that white walkers are quite intelligent. They want something, perhaps there's a way to settle the conflict. Who would think that one of the dragons will die and will destroy the Wall? Everyone on the forums tried to seek out the hidden Targaryens to ride them. (But I think we had a hint that it will happen, a quote by Patchface about something green, blue and black)

A big takeaway here is that Sam’s father Randyll is not present at the feast which takes place at Horn Hill, and Sam’s got Heartsbane. In the show, Randyll clearly dies and it’s not a far cry to assume he might in the books, as well. The fact that Sam knows Horn Hill is his is another clear indication Randyll is dead. Everyone at the feast is alive - except for maybe Mormont? However, Sam calls the Old Bear ‘Lord Mormont’ rather than 'Commander’ (and Daenerys often thinks of Jorah as her gruff old bear). I think this is 100% Jorah. The guests were warm and everyone was singing and dancing and having a good time - just like in Theon’s dream before it turns dark and cold and gory. The guests in Sam’s dream appear to be enjoying their food, too, whereas in Theon’s dream, the wine turns bitter. And then there are the bright colors rather than black (I think this also might hint that the Night’s Watch will completely disband). Regarding Grenn and Pyp and the other brothers… GRRM has emphasized that the show has killed several people who will never die in the books. While this might be true of Randyll Tarly, as well, I can’t help but consider that Sam’s black brothers ultimately live, based on the feast’s roll call. The fact that it’s likely Jorah at this dream feast gives me hope for Daenerys, since I see him returning to her good graces in the books, as well.

I think that Sam's dream is more likely the death of the Night's Watch rather than actual death. The bright colors they're wearing and him specifically noticing this deviates from the other dreams. Gilly waiting for him with milk coming from her breast seems more a sign of life (mother's milk) than death. Also, Sam having his ancestral sword and yet not one member of his family being at the feast I think also points to this being more metaphysical death than actual death.

Does anyone know if Marillion was named after the eighties band of the same name? It's too coincidental that his musician character is also the name of a band fr the eighties (they were a Genesis type band like when Peter Gabriel was lead singer). Could be?? They are very artsy and I could see GRR being into them.

I think Theon's dream told us exactly how Lyanna Stark died. It's quite possible that she had to have an emergency caesarian to have Jon, but nobody was skilled enough to save her. Why else would she have guts on her gown? It would also explain how the blood went on her blanket when Ned found her. It was too high to be from a normal birth as it went across her stomach rather than between her legs.

Shelley Masters her gown being white was interesting. Bridal gown maybe? And the csection makes sense.

Gilly wasn't at the feast. She was in bed. Couldn't that mean she lives? And the milk coming from her breast signify she gave birth again possibly to Sam's child?

I think Jon will die too. We can't enter at the winterfell's feast (maybe because it's too soon to die) but we on Sam's. It's a paradox

I've always liked your videos a lot but fell in love with "Jon Snow is the cause of the White Walkers return." Love this "Feast of Dreams" one, too. Yeah, Sam's dream is different as he leaves the feast to instead join a lactating Gilly (perhaps a sign of continued life). I agree with the theory Jon Snow cannot die/is already dead/an undead because he is the prince that was promised to replace the current Night king. And recalling Gilly's peculiar comment about "sea" and "see," Jon, as Raeghar's son, is actually the king of the knights. I think Jon Snow really died and resurrected the first time as a babe and Catelyn, sensing who he really was, could not keep her promise to even her gods to love him. And Allister Thorne's last words..."and now I rest. But you, LORD SNOW, you'll will be fighting their battles forever." I am addicted to GOT. Thanks so much for all the juice! Love you, Gray!

Hi there!!! I have this crazy idea... there is one god with seven faces and some characters fills the description: The father (Jhon Snow): represents divine justice, and judges the souls of the dead The Mother (Daheneris): The Mother is prayed to for mercy and watches over fertility, childbirth, and peace The Maiden (sansa): represents purity, innocence, love, and beauty. The Crone (Samwell): represents wisdom and foresight. She is represented carrying a lantern. The Warrior (many characters hound, briene, tormund): represents strength and courage in battle. The Smith (Gendry): represents creation and craftsmanship. The Stranger (Arya): The Stranger represents death and the unknown. It is rarely prayed to. what do you think?

With no place set for Jon it does make me wonder if he has a very different destiny - like becoming the next Night King. The wall he is experiencing is the separation between the living and the Others or the life he knew and the life he ends up with. That would definitely be a big heartbreak.

"Nothing". When Jon is asked by Milisandra what did he see on the other side he said there was nothing. This is referenced several other times with other characters in the books. What is your opinion? Is this a huge clue. All men must die? What about non-men? Children of the Forest, White Walkers, Others etc.

Thank you so much for this video, it's absolutely amazing and it shows your dedication when reading the books. Excellent literary analysis!! I have a question, can the fact that Dany has attended to multiple feasts before (like her wedding feast) mean that she will die? She hasn't had any prophetic dreams where she attends them, though. And I think your point is that people who DREAM of attending feasts are the ones who die, yet not everyone who has attended a feast in real life WILL necessarily die, right? If that were the case, I guess 99% of Westeros' royals would be dead by the end lol.

I totally agree with you THE LIVING HAVE NO PLACE AT THE FEASTS OF THE DEAD bye Sam and Gillie 😭
@ShanghaiRooster6 жыл бұрын
But all, except Lord Commander Mormont, are still alive in the books when Sam has this dream. It could mean nothing beyond the Night's Watch and Gilly being Sam's new family, as he'd been excluded from his real one, and perhaps that Sam will become head of his family - maybe eventually the 999th commander of the Night's Watch.

I think Sam and everyone in his dream except Jon is gonna die but that’s just me he could become the lord commander but I feel like he will be lord of hornhill over being the lord commander but we will see

You should make one on Jon’s dream where he’s on top of the wall with a burning sword killing the wights and he looks around and all his brothers are dead
@stealth116 жыл бұрын
I'm conficted on this one. While what you say makes sense, I've long felt that Sam was the safest of the characters in this story. Maybe that's part of the problem and I've been lulled into believing it with the way his character has been presented in both the books and on the show. Hmmm

Great content! Im kinda binging your channel right now and it’s really well edited and scripted. I don’t know how many female GOT theorists there are on KZbin making videos but it’s a good change of pace. Side note... Does her voice create an imagine of a black woman to anyone else? I’m new here so I don’t know her ethnicity or nationality for sure.

this sounds crazy but my guess based on the evidence presented in this video is that Jon having been resurected will never enter the land of the dead (ether he will live forever or will go to some alternitave afterlife). Regardless of what happens everyone will die eventuraly and end up at the feast for the dead, weather as resualt of injury, illness, lack of food, from the cold or old age, everyone will die and end up at the feast for the dead, everyone except Jon.

Based on your take of this, could it mean that Jon becomes the new NK? Never dead and not quite alive either. Stuck in a place where he cannot reach his loved ones. Man, that would suck.

I like to think way outside the box and sometimes pretend there is no box. It would make sense if it plays into the whole foreshadowing thing in the books.

Yeah, I’m convinced that Jon is incapable of dying or will live for a very long time (like Melisandre) and it’s just about the worst ending I can imagine for him.

I just keep reminding myself of the recurring Valar Margoulis theme, all men must die. That includes Jon, so I hope he isn't immortal and forced to watch everyone else die. That's all bitter, no sweet.
@supremeinblack6 жыл бұрын
Wow, great take on this. Could the reason that Jon Snow cannot get into the feast also be further that he is UNdead - neither living or dead meaning that he will become the Night King on the show? I'm a little torn between either Jon or Bran becoming this. I'm leaning towards Bran b/c I feel that whoever transforms into the Night King must already be a powerful warg/ greenseer. Also - what do you think that Maester Amon meant by his talk with Jon regarding kill the boy and let the man be born.. hoping that he has the strength to do what needs to be done..?
