I remember taking my dad to a show and while they performed this song he just sat and cried. Dad was an incredible keyboard player and Dream Theater was our last concert together. Lyrics: Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where do we go when we die? What lies beyond And what lay before? Is anything certain in life? They say, life is too short The here and the now And you're only given one shot But could there be more Have I lived before Or could this be all that we've got? If I die tomorrow I'd be all right Because I believe That after we're gone The spirit carries on I used to be frightened of dying I used to think death was the end But that was before I'm not scared anymore I know that my soul will transcend I may never find all the answers I may never understand why I may never prove What I know to be true But I know that I still have to try If I die tomorrow I'd be alright Because I believe That after we're gone The spirit carries on Move on, be brave Don't weep at my grave Because I am no longer here But please never let Your memory of me disappear Safe in the light that surrounds me Free of the fear and the pain My questioning mind Has helped me to find The meaning in my life again Victoria's real I finally feel At peace with the girl in my dreams And now that I'm here It's perfectly clear I found out what all of this means If I die tomorrow I'd be alright Because I believe That after we're gone The spirit carries on

I want to share my story of why this song is so incredibly special to me. 2019, I lost my Dad to heart failure, he was 59. He didn't drink, nor did he smoke...there was just a bunch of health complications for a number of years. He was a avid drummer, including teaching the local drum line for more over a decade. More importantly, he was the biggest Dream Theater fan...He absolutely loved you guys. He took me to see you guys on the Gigantour with Megadeth, I was 16. I remember hearing this song, but not ever truly understanding the meaning behind it. When Dad was sick in the ICU he called me and wanted to talk arrangements, he told me he wanted this song to be played at his funeral. He fell asleep right after we got off the phone and passed away at 12:12 the next day, just like how you wrote in this song. I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for this, without it I wouldn't have this special moment with my old man.

I agree. People want to believe so they can better cope with the fact that this is it. The inevitable is coming. We were dead for 13 billion years. We will be dead for much longer. But we also die (from a consciousness perspective) every night in our sleep. We welcome it. When that alarm goes off we want more of it. But only when we know we’ll be back. That last rest. It’ll be the final one. YOLO.

Added some fills to make his spot truly HIS and not just a replacement. It's great to see he is most definitely a member of the band, and well deserved!

I truly believe that the value of a performance doesn't lay in between the notes, the chords and the lyrics, but it is found on the faces of the people in the crowd, in their eyes, in their emotions. Look at that crowd exploding in joy, and how that reflects on James's LaBries smile. I love this guy so much for what he brings on the stage. We always praise Petrucci, Rudess, Mangini, Myung. Let's give James LaBrie the credit he deserves, he's one thing with the crowd in this song, man his energy and joy is a pure reflection of all of the emotions flying in those people singing along, lighting up their phones, playing along air drums and air guitars. What a blast of a performance.

Just beautiful! John P was my fiancees guitar idol and sadly my fiancee passed away in May of 2020. We were supposed to see DT one day together. It was on our bucket list. Well I am fullfilling that wish by going see them this December and praying I get to meet John P and tell him exactly what kind of fan he was. He bought an Ernie Ball Music Man JP6 and played it so well.

If I ever get a chance to meet James LaBrie, I will let him know this is my all-time favorite DT song. Love how he pretty much whispers the question at the beginning of the song ..... and by the end he is sure, certain and KNOWS there's more .... and Jordan's gentle piano gives way to the entire band putting the exclamation point on LaBrie's powerful voice.

One of my favorite things about this song is Jordan's restraint...while I love watching Jordan go INSANELY fast on the keys, this is one of the few DT songs where he holds back and plays what perfectly suits the song...and it's BEAUTIFUL! We all know everyone in the band is a MASTER of their instrument, but allowing the song to breath it's own life has a unique way of touching the masses. This song is a true masterpiece, and has been for 20+ years.
