This movie needs a sequel! Karl Urban has been on board for a followup forever now. Studios just need to get on it.

7:39 We can use something like that in Metal Gear Solid 5. It’s a drug called Acceleramin. When we use it, everything is in slow motion for a moment. Very useful for when you want to ambush multiple people at once.

"Is there a sequel?" Sadly, no. The writer has said that he had a trilogy in mind, but Dredd wasn't marketed well, and didn't earn enough in theaters to secure funding for a followup. There was talk of a series to be streamed on Amazon or Netflix, but I haven't heard anything about that in 5+ yrs. And now, Urban is on The Boys. Any future project would likely a reboot.

It's refreshing to see something that isn't cookie cutter. If this was traditional old school Hollywood Dredd would be romantically involved and had to avenge her death and his assistant would have been screaming in every other sceen. In post modern Hollywood his trainee would have shown Dredd up as a dinosaur and been show to be perfect in everyway. The violence is over the top and it's the perfect buddy cop movie without the James Gunn/Weadon humor.

The Raid was released first but not only was Dredd filmed first, the story it's based on was published years earlier.

Dredd is a blast. Judge first originated in the British weekly anthology title 2000AD in 1977 and expanded into his own comic runs set within the 2000AD universe. One aspect that's really cool is Dredd ages in real time, introduced at 38 and by 2023 he's in his early 80s with his active service being from 2079-2145. Judge Dredd even inspired Robocop and from my understanding the original Script for Robocop was for a Judge Dredd film but they never acquired the rights so it turned into Robocop. There was a Judge Dredd film before this typed Judge Dredd (1995) starring Sylvester Stallone. Visually it was amazing everything was pulled right out of the comic but the writing was a little weak and Dredd did remove his helmet like 15 minutes into the film. First 15 minutes are great though it's just the writing and depiction of Dredd that lets the film down while the music, action, and production design is great. It also embraces alot of the wacky elements of the 2000AD universe as well. Dredd (2012) is much better written and has a much better depiction of Dredd. But for budget reasons it doesn't visually match that of the comics or the 1995 film but as most of the film is set in a block it's not that big of a deal. Personally a perfect Dredd sequel or TV show would be a mix between the 1995 and 2012 films as both have strong elements that work really well. 6:26 There are other Mega Cities beyond Mega City One for example Mega City Two. Mega City City One pretty much takes up most of the East Coast while Mega City Two makes the entire American West Coast, covering California, Oregon, and Washington. And then there's Texas City making up most of Texas, everything in between is the Wild West pretty much the cursed earth and wastelands with small towns and villages made up of outcasts. Beyond America there are other cities for example Brit-Cit megacity sprawling across south England. There's Hondo City in Japan that stretch's from Hokkaido to Wakayama. So even though there was a massive nuclear war in the 2070s there's still live beyond America. Even the history pre 2070s of course is very different and there's so much lore on how the world came to this leading up to the war.

Judge Dredd is an anti-hero in the comics. An anti-hero is a character who has no qualms about killing bad guys even if killing is against the law. Here's some anti-heroes other than Judge Dredd The Punisher (Marvel) Ghost Rider (Marvel) Blade(Marvel) Wolverine (Marvel) Deadpool (Marvel) Spawn(Image) John Constantine (DC) Red Hood(DC) Peacemaker (DC) Vigilante (DC) Lobo(DC) Superpatriot(Image) Bloodshot (Valiant) Judge Dredd is a character from a British comic book called 2000A.D. from Rebellion comics.

Not totally accurate, Dredd is very strict about the law and he would never break the law. However for the most part, he is the law and has a lot of power to and rights to carry out executions. He's an anti hero because he is very strict and unforgiving, often therefore unreasonable about applying the law to the letter even even if it's unfair and very quick to use violence rather than de-escalation or negotiation. As a result he is seen as brutal and unbending, oppressive almost to the point of being a fascist. He also sees democracy as a failure that allowed extremists, corrupt oligarchs and capitalists to get away with robbing the world blind and leading to the third world war, so he comes down hard on pro democracy activists. This is why he's an anti hero.

The helmet and covering the eyes is a psychological trick, not to hide their identities. It is similar to the way today police are supposed to keep their hats in as an authority symbol. Likewise when some used to wear sunglasses it was to cover the eyes and make them more intimidating. I used to know a State trooper and he made these points and said how just wearing the "Smokey the Bear" had changed people's attitudes and usually de-escalated them. Most Judges lived in their chapter house, which was basically a fortress, so again they didn't need to cover for anonymity. They could live elsewhere if they wanted to, however, and Dredd did. Also, they had badges with their names anyway.

Sector house not chapter house but other than that correct.

You guys asked all of the correct existential questions regarding current governments. Dredd has a lot of subtle "how the hell did this come to be normal" moments in it. Laws exist to restrict some, and to be circumvented by those who've designed them. No human society will ever be just, all we can do is make it kind of ordered.

the character in the comic is way less fair, for example a character in the comic was Robbed because the person was wearing too fancy clothing he charged the person for inciting the rober to rob

The blocks are pretty much self contained cities. The blast door features relate to protection from nuclear blasts. 'What from?' You ask? There are other Mega cities around the world, including Mega cities in Russia. I don't think the relationships were fully realised in the comics, but I believe it was still anachronistic. Hence the blast shielding and the 'war protocol' exercises. Also, there were the 'block wars' Where neighbouring blocks would get in to it with each other.

The Stallone movie has it's issues. Visually, the Stallone movie is much closer in style and aesthetic to the original source (comics) with regard to the sets, costumes, and props. However, the big problem with the Stallone movie is that it combines several of the comic book storylines together, somewhat poorly, and that the movie execs didn't believe that people would come see it without an A-List actor in the main role as a draw. Consequently, Stallone's version of Dredd removes his helmet constantly, because the studio needed his face on screen, especially for the promo material. Stallone himself is visually fine for the role, but he "overacted" at times, such as with his version of the "I am The Law" speech. Stallone's version is not terrible, but it's not good either, I'd say sort of mediocre.
@JudgeGeneHunt Жыл бұрын
One could argue that elements of the Stalone version were actually quite good. The early scenes with Fergie showed how unreasonable and oppressive the judge system was, Armand Asante was awesome as Rico, Hammerstein was brilliant (even though the ABC warriors don't belong in Dredds timeline) and they put Mean Machine angel together perfectly. The combining of so many stories together was the main problem but even that might have worked hard they not cut large chunks from the film to stop it being 'R' rated in the states and so making it very disjointed. By the way a member of our community of Dredd fans/cosplayers has the bike from the 2012 film (I've sat on that bike), quite a few props and costumes and one of the taxis and a Saracen armoured car from the Stalone film.
