Awesome video!! I finally understand what was going on in my system. Every time I told my DR my sugar is always high in the morning he looked at me like I was crazy. And when do we get our blood tests?!?!?... in the morning. Even when I got my A1C1 down to a normal level, he wanted to put me back on metformin because of this spike in the morning. I refused to take it again, as it gave me diaharea and made my blood sugar swing to the point of almost passing out. I have gotten healthy doing a Carnivorish/keto diet and have lost 30+ lbs and feel sooo much better. Of course he wants me on statins now cuz of my higher LDL do to a healthy diet but not gonna happen. Scary when the patients are now more educated than the majority of the DR's that are just taught to shell out pharmaceuticals!!

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you Dr. Ekberg! I have worried about my high morning blood sugar for a couple of years now. My doctor told me that since I have a 22.7 BMI and a 4.8 A1c that I shouldn't be worried even though my morning blood sugar is always somewhere between 110 and 120, but I was still worried until I saw this video you made! kind of a newbie here, two weeks ago went to the Dr. for something completely different and turns out, my glucose was 486, triglycerides of 1095, doctor said he had never seen it that high, did a1c and came back 13.4. 190lbs, 5'10, i couldn't believe it, basically prescribed insulin, metformin and some cholesterol drug and said I'm sorry, that was it ! I began researching and immediately started low carb diet (I was a heavy snacker before). Did the insulin for like two days, but quickly learned why would I put more insulin in my body, so stopped it. stopped the metformin too and never took the cholesterol meds. Currently in a 72 hour fast that ends tonight at 8pm, but might go longer, maybe even 5 days. last nights glucose was 109, experience exactly what he describes, but its steady, this morning waking up around 130 (Dexcom G7 reading) and slowly dropping throughout the day. did bloodwork yesterday and in about two weeks, triglycerides already down to 645, so going in the right direction. medical industry is a joke, just gave me meds and said good luck ! i refuse to take medicine. Thanks for the video and explanation !

This morning, blood sugar at 142!. WHGMS big time with probably a spike in cortisol to boot. I'm a 66 year old ectomorph who has a BMI of 21 basically my entire life and have never been overweight. Ever. But I recently started a keto diet and after a month measured my fasting insulin and it was 9.4. Since I had been eating a SAD for decades my fasting glucose is typically around 110, so my homa-ir was about 2.3, insulin resistant. 😢 This video has helped me understand that I am on the right track but it's going to take a while to get insulin sensitivity. I wish I had found this video a year ago when I was first diagnosed with insulin resistance. I made the change to LCHF and IF and dropped my A1C by 3.0 in 90 days, but waking with a bloodsugar of 120ish every day. I discovered I could knock it down to 90ish with low-intensity cardio or remain at 120 until ate. After eating, I would also drop to 90 and remain for the day(according to my CGM). My wife's blood sugar will not go above 120's even if she eats a 1/2 a dozen donuts and drinks a 1/2 a gallon of Orange juice for breakfast. I was waking every day at her upper limit. Now, I just do some low intensity cardio in the morning to knock it down and move on with my day. This video would have saved me weeks of research and frustration. Thanks Doc.

This dawn effect concept really makes sense after all. I've been doing keto/omad for a long time , and i was pretty confident that my fasting blood glucose won't exceed 85mg/dl. So, i decided to give a try one time in the morning, and i was disappointed when the reading reached 100-ish which falls under 'prediabetes' according to web-med. Then, i measured again in the afternoon (also fasted , just water/black coffee/green tea), and it turned out to be 82mg/dl. Definitely it was weird, but it got all cleared up after you explained the science behind this phenomenom. Thanks!

I checked my glucose at the 23 hr fast time it was 108 mg/dL. I am fat adapted. Ate a snack of 1/2 a cup of low carb chi pudding and a small cheese stick. Checked my glucose at the 1/2 hour mark was 102 mg/dL, the hour mark was 89 mg/dL then at the 2 hour mark was 93 mg/dL. I have done this on main meals with similar results. This pattern I have notice my whole life. My glucose levels are lower several hours after I eat than my fasting levels. Now I know why this happen. Thanks Doctor.

Another way of looking at this is: Think of it as your liver emptying itself of the fat stored in it by turning that fat into a vary small amount of sugar which is not too excessive to the point where the pancreas will make more insulin to put it back there! I had noticed myself that my fasting bloods were around 7 or 8 m/mols per litre but then within a few hours of actually eating something MODEST in carbs or protein my blood sugar would then drop to around 5 m/mols.... The important thing is that my blood sugar levels are actually now responding to the amounts of whatever I eat (or drink) in as much as my insulin is actually working and doing what it ought - which is remove the additional sugar from what I've eaten (or drunk) *once it goes BEYOND the limit of what is its absolute acceptable boundary* ..... and then as the time since the last consumption drifts on and my liver goes into reverse to start adding sugar back into the blood stream from the fat in it (through novo-gluco-genesis) my blood sugar levels creep up but only gradually (and not enough to upset my pancreas). The sugar levels which had been properly previously brought right down upon eating, although climbing, still remain within the bounds of "acceptable for the time being" if a tad on the higher side than that smack bang in the middle average. As the great doctor has said, my hb1ac numbers (currently 5.2) have become "normal" .... and my own doctors don't understand where, why or how my T2 diabetes has gone away! :)

Hello Dr. I just saw this video and it was a god send... I started intermittent fasting last week and I did 8 straight days of 16/8 fasting. My eating window was usually between 1pm in the day to 8pm at night and I would eat my first meal at 1pm and a second lighter meal between 6-7pm.... I started feeling great, energised, spritely and confident added to which I hadn't taken any meds.... Then In the past three days after fasting for over a week, I noticed that my fasting blood glucose level readings were between 139 - 142...prior to IF my readings were between 98 to 115 fasted readings.... I panicked and I stopped the IF, thinking that I was doing something wrong or that it wasn't agreeing with me... I started back on diamicron thinking that I needed to get it back down... I was frustrated for the past couple of days and now your video appears in my recommendations.... I'm so relieved now... Thank you so much Dr for your edification. I'll be getting back on my IF immediately and I will also be coming off the diamicron meds... I was confused because the way I was feeling was not lining up with the readings I was seeing on the glucose meter... New Subscriber here.

This is one of your best videos ever. Thanks! Having been keto for two years, I almost feel like not measuring my blood sugar any more, because it bounces all over, and is ridiculously high in the morning and even after exercise (except low-intensity cardio, when it's "normal.") I've also heard it called glucose-sparing, because apparently most of our body is using ketones when we're fully fat adapted. It even looks more alarming, because my ketones rarely go over 1.0 unless I fast more than a day.

Just found you yesterday and now this vid today has proven to be very helpful to me. I was concerned about my fasting glucose level of 105 this morning but it’s because of all the decades of being told that it means I have pre-diabetes without any questions about what I’m eating or whether I’m eating at all. So many corporate and government puppet doctors out there causing great harm to people. Thank you for your work and your efforts to educate and empower us.

Oh thank you Dr. I developed type 2 in my late 40s. I have been on a Keto diet and intermittent fasting and have noticed that my morning blood sugar is sitting-on average in the 112 range. I knew of the dawn effect but I expected a much lower number and hoped the keto diet would address that. But now I understand what is going on. Again thank you.

Hi Dr.Ekberg I am an arden follower of your videos. I am a type 2 diabetic, been on insulin for 20 years. Been on short and long acting mixtard insulin. I take 24 units in the morning and 20 units at night. Since following your videos, my blood sugar has been stable with BSL at 6-8 mmol and about 5-6 mmol fasting. I tired Intermittent fasting with OMAD. My last meal on the previous night is at 21 hours with a piece of roasted lamb, mixed veggies, half an avocado with a few macadamia nuts. Next morning BSL measured 6.6 mmol. Had a bullet coffee. At about 14 hours, BSL measured 7.4 mmol. Had an avocado and a bullet coffee. Pre dinner BSL at 1900 hours 7.2 mmol. Insulin taken was 9 units. Dinner consisted of lamb roasted, mung beans with coconut, ghee, mixed veggies & macadamia nuts. 2 hours PP glucose reading was 8.4 mmol. Fasting next morning at 8AM, BSL reading 8.0 mmol. Why is blood sugar persisting to be high even though I had the OMAD diet and took 9 units of insulin. Was the insulin taken insufficient or is my body getting adjusted to the reversal of insulin resistance.

We need more videos about this in the Keto community. I've been trying to get IR down for 7 months through LCIF. After using CGM, I noticed blood sugar in morning about 110. I'd try walking for 45 minutes and it would go up a few more points. Then I'd try weights, and it would go up another few more points. Then I'd try HIIT and it would go up even more. All without eating a thing. Not until 19 hour fast would it start coming down. So my A1C is not quite going down enough at 5.8. Insulin levels are good. Learning that I need to chill and not stress my body so much and do a few OMAD per week. Will see at my next blood test.

This explains so much. I've been on LCHF for 7 months and wracking my brain as to why my glucose levels were so high compared with other people. My waking blood sugar often sits between 110-125 and just rides it out for a while. Now I'm not worried about this. Thanks!

Well, this exactly describes me. I've been on a keto diet for 3 months now, have lost 40 pounds, do 18/6 intermittent fasting and yet my waking and fasting blood sugar level is typically over 100, often around 111 and this morning it was 126. So I'm reassured I'm doing the right thing and that nothing is wrong. This also explains why if you do the Dr. Kraft insulin assay test with your glucose tolerance test, you can come back with results that look like you have insufficient insulin, in response to a meal. Your body is just on chill mode because it's down-regulated its insulin response because it doesn't need to produce high amounts. This makes so much sense.

I was looking for something like this for many days. I have been following OMAD for a year now and was able to cut almost 20 kgs. Since I was not able to cut down my weight further, i started eating one meal every alternate days i.e, 4 meals in a week. I never had diabetes but I observed my sugar levels high in the mornings. After 2 hours finishing my meal, sugar level is around 125 but in the mornings it is between 100 and 110. My h1 is 5 and when I checked about this with my doctor, she said it's the starting stage of diabetes. I was completely devastated after hearing this and thought my one year's effort went in vain until I finally watched this video. Completely relieved 😌. The last sentence says it all "Cells wanting to have some food instead of being fast fed all the time"

I'm not diabetic but one day I woke up and decided to test my blood sugar. When I did it was 105.... I was naturally alarmed since I had done an A1C test the year before and it came back at 5.3. Anyhow I started monitoring my blood sugar levels for that entire week and I also started to log what I ate. Let me tell you, logging your foods and testing 1 hour after you've eaten and three hours after you've eaten gives you a really good idea of what kind of foods spikes your blood sugar. Thanks to my paranoia I've now decreased the amount of carbs I eat and I've also eliminated additional sugars from my diet- i have a little lindor truffle after lunch at times but that does nothing to my readings. Let me also mention that my blood sugar usually between 103-106 when tested as soon as I wake up. I retest it an hour later and its around 92-95 so it regulates itself naturally. I then have breakfast and when I retest it sometimes even after am hour or two its around 95. Like I said - I'm not diabetic but I do not wish to be and me testing my blood sugar and seeing it at 106 first thing in the morning was so alarming to me that I decided to make lifestyle changes. I hope that it can regulate itself and go below 100 in time. Thanks for your informative video

It's not that you have to take the test in the morning. It's just that you have to fast for 12 hours, and the easiest way to do that is first thing in the morning. You got to think that the doctor's office is only open from like 9 to 5. there's really no way to get that 12 hours of fasting time. The later you wait, the more likely you are to eat

I thought everything was good until I bought a glucose tester. I tested my blood sugar upon waking and it was 125 and the next reading after stressing out was 135. I was about to buy Juman seed powder as well as come off of IF until seeing this video. I knew I was doing the diet right because I am in ketosis much of the day but very thankful to see this video. Your explanation reassured me that I may be ok, which matches how I feel (normally at high glucose I feel tired but now its all the reverse). At the end of my fast my sugar was 75 to 83 in the mornings. Now I am eating twice a day and my sugar never goes over 120 and that's one hour after eating but by 2 hours after eating it's 83. I fast 18 hours a day, I walk 30 to 90 minutes a day, eat carnivore meals twice a day, Am now fat adapted. My body is changing. I have decided to fast at least 72 hours twice a year after finding out all the benefits.

I am a thin Type 2 and have been for 31 years. The visceral fat is in my belly. I'm sure that's related to my diabetes. However, this fasting idea concerns me. If I lose any more weight, I'll be really underweight. Can you address this, Dr. Ekberg? Some of us cannot afford to eat less. Thanks.

@@r0berto5060 If you keep doing IF you should see your blood glucose go down in a few weeks. Same here, my blood glucose was high in the morning, around 118, I did the IF and now my blood glucose is around the 90s. I do IF 20-4 everyday, sometimes I will do 36 hours. The 36 hours helped the most for sure.

@@danpan001 hey, I have not tried fasting for 72 hours. I decided not to check daily so as not to stress over it too much. I haven't checked in a while but I believe it's not fixed yet (my high sugar in the morning). Still, I eat and right away it goes down.
