In episode #57 of the On the Job video series, Larry Janesky, owner and founder of Dr. Energy Saver, walks us through the installation of a high efficiency ductless heat pump.
A heat pump's job is to extract heat from the air to either cool or heat a home. During the summer, it will extract heat from the inside, and move it to the outside, to cool the living space. In wintertime, it will extract heat from the outside and move it to the inside.
Heat pumps are very efficient at extracting heat, even when the temperatures are very low outside. They will always be able to extract enough to heat up the home.
The unit being installed in this project is a split system, with an outside unit and three internal heads designed to serve three different zones of the building -- each with its own thermostat. In Air Condition mode, it has an 18 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating). In Heating Mode it has a 9.5 HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) rating.
Heat is transferred between the external and external units through refrigerant line sets. The shorter the line sets, the more efficient the system is. A fan in the internal units then distributes hot or cold air throughout each of the three zones.
While it may seem like a disadvantage having the hot or cold air blow from a single wall mounted unit, a high efficiency ductless system is still able to effectively maintain comfortable temperatures because there is no heat loss or gain through the ducts. The ductless heat pump is a great option when there isn't a lot of space for bulky ductwork.

One thing no one has mentioned compared to a typical conventional Heat pump, the new mini split technology while much much more efficient, the repair cost is 3 to 5 times higher. I work in the HVAC industry for 35 years now and if you lose a condensing motor on a conventional system, the average cost to replace is around $300.00 .......on a mini split, when the $450.00 condensing motor fails it also takes out a $900.00 board, one of 3 that are located ion the condenser. Everyone needs to understand this when making a decision on Mini split technology.

Single zone units are way more efficient than multi head units like this. Up to 33 Seer now is available from Fujitsu, way beyond the 18 Seer Dr Energy is promoting. If you want max efficiency, get multiple single zone units. Also provides redundancy so of one condenser is down, you are not without heat. Also, if this install in a region that gets snow like shown in the one pic, would want to raise it well off the ground rather than mounting on a ground level base as shown in this install. Condenser will ice up in the winter and you want a clear path for drainage. Wall mount above the highest possible snow line is best practice. Other than that, great technology.

Each single zone is running about $3500 to 4k these units are too expensive especially in my situation where I need at least 5

I recently had the chance to see one of the Mitsubishi 3 head units in operation, the outdoor unit is so quiet that if you didn't see the fan moving you wouldn't know it was running (seriously the fan on my laptop computer generates more noise), the indoor units make more noise but still way quieter then a window unit A/C, but more then hearing the air blowing thru normal ducts. overall A very quiet system when compared to the noisy outdoor units of normal ducted HVAC.

May I ask why the condenser is not mounted off the ground as it is a heatpump?

You missed a perfect opportunity to talk about liquid evaporating and gas condensing and the differences between liquid, vapor, and gas. Taking enthalpy and pumping it inside or outside.
