The three most popular heat pump brands we install for HRM home owners are Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and LG. Which one of these is the best ductless mini split heat pump?
Well it's not an easy question to answer. Why? Because it's going to be a bit different from home owner to home owner depending on what they find important or not.
The Fujitsu RLS3 wins on paper when we compare specifications and stats. It also comes with a 10 year parts and labour warranty. However the price point is higher than some of the other systems.

Nice table. How about an extra column for the ratio of cost by HSPF and/or SEER?

I made my choice by how many watts the unit uses running on LOW! All of the above units will get the job done.... but at what cost? When the room gets to the desired temperature, it will go to a low to run on.... choose the one with the lowest wattage on LOW! In my opinion for the greatest cost savings!

Great chart!! However, one of the key pieces of information I would like to see how many square feet the units will cool or heat? For example I have a portable A/C that's rated for 700 sq. ft. So, I have a 1200 sq. ft. High Ranch home. Roughly 1/2 the home is open concept L/R, D/R, Kitchen etc and the other half is the B/Rs and bathroom. What unit, size etc do you recommend? Thanks for the info.

Excellent video, but severely outdated; five-years can see a lot of changes.

What are the HSPF & SEER on the RLS3H? the same as RLS3? How many outlets come with it? I have a small 2-story house, about 750sf, plus basement & attic mostly used for storage so nothing needed there, currently on natural gas (furnace.) Should I stay with current heat and just go with a mini split with 2 outlets for cooling (cooling only?)

why are we having so much problem with humidity with our mini split system

My problem with humidity was that the household humidifier was still on in the basement!

Humidity reduction has been the unexpected feature of my Mitzibishi 24n . On mornings when its hot with overnight rain I select the humidity reductiin feature and have seen the humidity go from 70% to 40% in one hour. I live in the mid atlantic near the coast and humidity was a part of every day life before the mini split but now its very rare that normal cooling mode does not keep humidity under 50%..

Video is very misleading. These [ductless] systems are only good choices as primary heat for extremely well insulated dwellings with excellent double/triple glazing. These systems are good choices as only supplemental heat source for dwellings with not ideal insulation and glazing. Some of the reasoning: 1. heating testing is done at around 40 and 20F. Lower values are extrapolations. Below 20F the efficiency drops drastically. This can be seen in the graph starting around @. 2. costs are higher than oil heat, unless [state] electricity costs are very low. 3. Heat is expelled from the head at the ceiling and must be pushed down to the living space by the weak fan. This will not be [efficiently] successful because heat rises and the "whisper quiet" fan is not sufficiently powerful to overcome the thermal forces and other heated air distribution issues. 4. Heat sensor is in the head at the ceiling where the temperature is much higher than at the center height of the room, or at the floor. Therefore, comfort is a great challenge. A $250 programmable thermostat for each head is a must. 5. Well skilled/educated contractors [in heat pump technology] are extremely difficult to find. Without a well skilled designer/installer, the project is a failure "waiting to happen". Buyer beware! 6. Mechanical noises are annoying and distracting. Vibration noises from outside units will be present if the outside unit[s] are mounted on the exterior wall.

I just installed one of these in my Barn and all of these points are right on vibrations weak fan to push air sensors in head units are not accurite and unit struggles when temps hit single digits although its supposed to go to -15 id say 0 is max and then youd be lucky to see 80 degree air coming out

sounds to me like unless you live in florida or so, a mini split is NOT for you. very negative comments. why do people buy so many mini splits and then like them??? mystical to me

Michael cee My comments are based on much research and actual use. The observations are meant to assist the potential buyer with their informed choice. They are not negative or positive, just facts to consider. I'll take a "stab" at your question, "why do people buy so many mini splits": 1. maybe the typical consumer [myself included] trusts all the positive information from mini split industry and related entities, 2. maybe the user's primary heat is other source than mini splits. This will create a 40-50D temperatures for the mini splits to hum along, as if it's installed in Florida. All folks I know use the mini splits in this way. 3. this technology requires lot's of time to research and understand the information researched. Still, there is very little actual use information listed in my original post. Hope this helps, which is my intent.

@@HC-tc7gv appreciate your long and quick response. however, the "red" flag is that you are"not being negative" but just stating "facts". i'm 75 and over the years i've found that people who are "just stating fact" are to be taken with the proverbeial "grain of salt". also i'm sure you are aware that research by two different persons can conclude totally differing conclusions, even though they have the "same data" to begin with. very nice try though. "potential buyer with their informed choice". henry, henry. "much research", well o.k., but the "actual use" is much better. i love real science. but i don't trust the "scientists" who interpret the results of their experiments. i can also interpret the results. and often with a differing result. but again i say nice try. sincerely
