In this video, I want to talk about the difference between fasting and starving. When does fasting become starvation?
You first need to know that the average non-overweight person is carrying around 100,000 calories of fat on their body. They are only carrying about 1,700 calories of stored sugar.
If you weighed 150 lbs, you would burn around 1,000-2,000 calories per day. This means that you have around 67 days worth of calories stored on your body.
The difference between fasting and starving is that with fasting, you’re living off of your fat fuel. When you’re starving, you’ve already used up all of your fat fuel, and you begin burning your muscle and organs for fuel.
If you have 100-200 lbs of extra fat, you have many calories stored.
The effects of fasting and starving are different. When you’re fasting, you don’t feel hungry-when you’re starving, you do.
When you’re starving, you also feel irritable, apathetic, fatigued, and weak. You also develop nutrient deficiencies when you’re starving.
Fasting helps you feel energetic, focus, and calm. Intermittent fasting alone will not cause starvation.
While you’re fasting, make sure you take nutrients, so you don’t develop a deficiency.

I mean that's based on the premise that a pound of human bodyfat has the caloric load of a pound of pure oil, but there's a lot of water and a bit of protein in that. It's probably more accurate to assume 2,000ish calories per pound of bodyfat. It's still a decent emergency reserve don't get me wrong, but the old 'three weeks without food' adage was probably about right back when it was coined. 4-5 weeks is probably about right for your average not fat person now.

Family and friends can be one of the hardest obstacles to overcome when trying to lose weight and eat healthy. I live in Ireland and while people here tend to be friendly and open they also hate for others to be doing something they themselves believe they can't do. The only way to inspire these people or change their perspective is to keep doing what you are doing and letting the results speak for themselves. Also accepting the possibility that some people just won't ever change or support you is ok. Never quit and never let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do. You can of course listen to advice but at the end of the day it is up to you to decide what you feel is best for you. Everyone is different. Congratulations on your weight loss. Keep it going ;D

Imagine if everyone on Earth did IF and OMAD. We'd have more than enough food for everyone and as a side benefit, everyone would be extremely healthy! Not to mention the fact that we would consume resources at a much slower pace, allowing for it to be replenished.
@priestesslucy3299
@priestesslucy3299 4 жыл бұрын
Well, we'd use less fuel cooking fewer meals, but the overall maintenance food intake is pretty similar between OMAD and the SAD. Now, getting everyone off the grains could put more land into pastoral systems and that's Certainly a benefit to the environment over grain farming.

I'm not a breakfast eater. I hate eating in the morning with a passion. With that said, I've been doing 16-18 hours fast mostly every day since I was a teenager. I'm going to be 56 next week. When I was doing IF unknowingly in the 1980s, my biggest worries were that someday I would get stomach ulcers. Fast forward to today, I never got stomach ulcers (never had any stomach problems). It turned out IF is a healthy way of eating style. For the last 40 years, I've gained an average of one pound a year. I ate mostly processed foods like everyone else. I think I didn't gain that much weight because of IF. Anyway, 2 years ago I found Dr. Berg's channel and I started eating healthy. Within 6 months, I lost 30 lbs. Basically, since I was doing IF already, all I did was eliminated most processed foods (no processed grains, and sugary drinks).

Thanks for another truth. Truth is people who eat very little, no fat, and all carbs ARE starving themselves of essential nutrients. I used to be hungry 30 minutes after eating. My Doctor sent me to a dietitian who told me I was eating too much fat and that I needed to eat more fruits, veggies and whole grains. AND I needed to eat five smaller meals a day. This would help my T2D. Okay! So May 15th I went carnivore. Down 30 pounds and feel great. There is a whole list of conditions I no longer experience. Life is great without carbs. Can easily go 24 without eating.

Day 2 of no food you actually become stronger, perhaps the body's way to ensure a successful hunt and kill. By day 3 of no food, the metabolism begins to slow, realizing there is a famine. So you can easily go up to 3 days before starvation effects kick in. The other thing that damages your metabolism is eating too few calories for several days. I read anything below 1400 calories will damage the metabolism.

_Starvation never kicks in while fasting!_ until you run out of surplus bodyfat. There's a certain amount your body needs for basic function and once you reach that level the body will start taking energy fro muscle equally as from fat. For some people this could easily be a year after the fast started. In fact for the people on My 600 pound life (especially the women) it's probably two years after the fast started. Now, somewhere around 7 days in, your body will go into long term preservation mode. _This has nothing to do with starvation!!!_ it's merely a downregulation of your metabolism to keep you alive as long as possible. Body heat and passive energy production are reduced. For me this happened on the 10th day of my 14 day fast.
@priestesslucy3299
@priestesslucy3299 4 жыл бұрын
Now yes, below 1400 calories per day will temporarily reduce a man's metabolism. But _if he's fasting_ he isn't using 1400 calories a day unless he's already entered long term preservation mode and he's very small and sedentary. An average man living an average life is probably living on 1800-2400 calories per day while fasting.

When I began Health Keto/IF I wasn't eating enough protein and I lost muscle. However, I had more energy and was able to build muscle and tighten my skin, and I was 55 at the time. I did end up with noticeable wrinkles, but a few months adding a collagen complex the wrinkles began to disappear, now the deep ones between my eyes are gone. I will be 58 now.

No you didn't. When you get a dexascan or any other body fat test, the only thing it tells you is your fat mass and your lean mass. Your lean mass is all non fat weight. That includes water, skin, blood volume, etc. You lost water weight and they count it in the lean mass category. You did not drop 5lbs of muscle mass in a month. Your body does not destroy protein.

Hi Dr. Berg. I have a question: you often say that human body is designed to best function using ketones vs. sugar. I've been following the keto diet for 9 months now and your vides are very helpful and motivational for me. Something that came into my mind and thought to ask you is regarding the babies's food. Their main fuel is breast milk till almost a year or so. Based on a quick research that I did, the breast milk has 17G of Lactose (which is a type of sugar). So, why the babies' main food is carbs-based then? Can you please do a video on this topic? Thank you.

Same reason children tend to do great and not get fat while eating a lot of sugar (unless they're also sedentary.) Because kids are in a growth phase and they can easily utilize that sugar positively.

Think about it, sugar makes you fat. When you're an infant, your body needs to pack on energy to support your development. So it would make sense that big kids primary food source has the ability to make it store energy.

When I've been dieting before ( small deficit) I've gone as much as 5 or Evan 7 days without training with weights and noticed no loss in strength . It wasn't intentional but I was surprised none of my lifts went down . That said I've trained very consistently with weights over the past 30 years and as has Been discussed before I think the body learns that u will need to retain muscle so hangs on to it where as some one that hasn't been training as consistently or for as long would atrophy more

When I was in high school, I fasted for almost 2 weeks a couple of times. The cravings were the worst in the first 24-48 hours. After that it seems like my metabolism slowed down. I had low energy, but the hunger pangs were negligible. I wish I would have known then that I should have been taking in electrolytes. Thanks to the good doctor I know I need to do that if I ever try to go that long again.

I used to always get scolded about how fasts are nonsense and that it's just another word for starvation. I decided to do alternate day fasting just to give it a shot and see what it was like after watching another one of your videos on the subject. That and also incorporate some HIIT into my workout schedule. I'm on my second alternate fasting day (so day 4) and I'm honestly blown away by the results so far. Things I've taken note of: - I've lost 8 pounds (my weight goes up easily but it's also not that hard to lose it since I'm considered obese) - Even though I don't get thirsty much, and only drink water to keep hydrated, my urine's been a little more concentrated than usual - While I still have cravings for sweets and baked goods and delicious food, I genuinely do not feel hunger during my fasting days. My stomach's rumbled more in the past, during days that I eat. It hasn't rumbled during either days that I've fasted. - I feel very.... I don't know, relaxed? I almost feel like I have more energy than I used to. I'm definitely not grumpy or moody, just typing this has made me smile. I guess I'm writing this not only to express my gratitude but to also tell others that are glossing past comments that this stuff genuinely works. It's nuts. Thanks, Doc.

Lucy Kassune you know fats like pork fat like lard . I eat only good fats such as avocados Alaskan salmon . And oil such as coconut oil, extra-virgin olive oil only, MCT oil, avocado oil, palm oil, rice bran.
@priestesslucy3299
@priestesslucy3299 4 жыл бұрын
@@generalrepair8731 commercial lard on a shelf has probably been hydrogenated or messed up somehow, but lard straight off a well-raised pig is incredibly good for you. My primary cooking oil is actually pastured beef tallow. As for your list of good oils, I've heard some bad things about Palm Oil (but I honestly don't know the details regarding Palm Oil, just a bad reputation) and Rice Bran Oil is a seed oil so that's 100% bad for you. You mentioned extra virgin olive oil, but the process of refining coconut oil and avocado oil to get rid of their natural flavors is almost as bad as it is with olive oil. (Fortunately for us, virgin coconut oil is perfectly safe to fry with, it just imparts a faint hint of coconut flavor into the food.)

Hi Dr Berg, I do quite a bit of fasting (both intermittent and extended) but am constantly confused about taking supplements while fasting. What should I take and when? Do vitamins and supplements need to be taken with food? Sometimes when I take them without food i think they might be giving me acid reflux. Is that possible? Is it ok to take digestive enzymes with the supplements to help them break down? Please make a video about this! Thank you for all you do! 😁

Great, thanks Dr.Berg. So with this in mind, I can waterfast for 40 days considering I am 100kg's at 5 feet 10, not being on any sort of medication, and not having any pre-existing conditions. I've already water-fasted for 8 days with no problem and felt great. What scared me is that Dr.Alan Goldhamer said that they keep us in check during long fasts so that we don't enter starvation since death comes soon after. But now after this video I know that's just scare tactics so that we sign up to his clinic. I'm 25kg's over my ideal weight that that should be confidence enough to do the 40day fast, with a 99% guarantee I will not be entering any "starvation period". Am I thinking correctly guys? Another question, How can we "take our basic nutrients during a water-fast when we're allowed nothing but water?
