Keith, Love the way you dressed the wheel. I have a fancy Bendix radius dresser that could do that, but I never thought of the simple and effective way of just using a dummy shaft. Excellent. And that index plunger with the ball end, also brilliant ! I might have thought to use an indexer again, but the index plunger is better. You are teaching me so much, thank you. I WILL use some of these ideas in my projects some day. Awesome video. ----Doozer

Keith, before making the final passes, I think you should have redressed the wheel. The radius on the wheel causes uneven wear since the outsides of the wheel come into contact first then move in. You’ll end up with a bigger radius at the end.

I thought that exact same thing- Bet that wheel is as Flat as my prom date was- now after all that- I think it coulda been re-dressed TWICE throughout all that grinding?

I must agree, certainly a redress for the final pass, but will the gear run on the minor diameter or the flanks of the splines?

I really enjoyed this project. As a hobby machinist I learn a great deal with every project you share. Especially enjoyed when you started cleaning your grinder and saw another project starting. Thank You, Ric

That B&S grinder is a really nice machine, compact, automatic, just a perfect size for a small shop. That shaft is coming out perfect, I think I’d mount one on the wall it’s so nice looking. Lol

I don't think people really understand the amount of patience and skill it takes to do that type of machining on a non-cnc machine. I enjoyed watching sir!

Sometime it is not the job that amazes me, but the machine that is doing the work. That B&S is amazing, All of the thought that went into making that machine and look at what you can do with it. Great job!

Surface grinding 101…awesome setup to radius wheel and to locate with the ball, really like the machine control….I had an issue of coming back in the morning to finish a grind from the night before….COLD morning and as fed down the cold machine held static…then bang it moved 😢…WTF 😮…lesson learned 😂😂😂😂

I'm telling you something that you already know. But if not maybe it'll save a part and anguish. When you started the spindle to make sure that the wheel doesn't explode, you only had a pad over that part. Having seen a wheel explode in a machine many years ago. I want to say that you need to make some sort of 3/16" thick steel surround. Because if it does happen, the amount of damage from those wheels is astounding! Your part and everything down to the chuck would be scrap.

Keith’s putting in the hours to fabricate parts that will keep Pearl running for another 60 or 70 years. The alternative would be the scrap yard. But I hate to think how much this project would have cost a retail customer!

I loved watching the grinder in operation something satisfying about the automatic movement. Just be careful with that spray bottle Keith I had the same reaction to you once you took a wipe with the rag definitely a can of worms not worth opening I'd say haha or maybe on a rainy day without any other projects to do.

Marking is good for visual contact, the keyways were the best identification for # 1 position then clockwise. The keyways are on the same centerline, but the part isn't symmetric as the keyway lengths vary making a left/right identifier. Our tool room ground all heat-treated surfaces to their finished sizes for injection mold segments, we had several radius dressers. If our fit was over .0012" nylon would bleed during the injection cycle. We always dressed every surface of the grinding wheel used, flat bottom, side wheeling or contour if removed from the arbor. The redressed form was tested by grinding a credit card piece of Formica in an optical compartor. Yours nib arbor was a simple, adequate, functional and cost effective addition to your fixturing. We probably would have used a quarter rounnd form grinding one side ground one flute wall doubling the amount of grinds. The nib could have dressed a flat portion, then rotate to form a radius and rotate to side dress the wheel. As pointed by others the ring test would be a safety reminder for new-be operators.

There are double keyways 180 from each other, so it's not a given.
