I'm a bridal shop owner and seamstress and I can tell you that changing a zipped back into a corset back is one of the easiest alterations to do, I've done it many times, often overnight. I know the show likes to over dramatize but that was really over the top.

My daughter's formal dress had to have this exact change, It was a designer bridesmaid dress and my daughter between ordering and getting dress had started working at McDonalds and sampled too much of what she was selling. :) I took it to an alterations shop, and they did it in a week. It did cost a bit, but it was an easy fix, and looked perfect, you would never have known it wasn't the original design.

I did wonder when she said that. I mean I'm no seamstress but I can sew and I used to make little dresses by hand for my daughter when she was small (am also not bad at invisible mending). My first thought was that even I could manage to take out a zip and replace it with some lacing, even if it did make me sweat a bit! It wouldn't take me seven weeks either.

I lost my baby weight very quickly with the first baby. After that, not so easy. :-( Regardless of wants or hopes, it seems when it comes to, say, celebrities or royal mothers, the focus is, How soon after giving birth will she look again as if she had never been pregnant in the first place? :-( And that's where trouble comes in IMO.

Exactly. Easy peasy alteration. I did it in less than an hour on a dress. You can buy a corset kit for $50 or less on ebay or amazon. You dont even have to take the zip out unless you want to. I’m sure you know a Bridal gown has much more structure and many more layers than a regular dress. And the bride called herself fat at the very beginning and said she had gained a lot of weight so why are you blaming the seamstress for trying to help her out? Yes, labor is not free. No one told the bride to add extra weight. I know sometimes gaining weight can sneak up on a person...believe me I know...but unless there is a medical condition, isn’t that the bride’s responsibility?

Any "honest" seamstress can tell you that altering that dress to a corset back can be done rather quickly since they are not messing with the details on the dress, just the closure. It's difficult when they have to work directly on the fabric. For example, when taking in the sides, they are removing fabric and therefore has to remove the lace or beadings design, if there are any in that area, and put them back on afterward. Now that is fussy. Heck, I'm not a seamstress and I can tell that the lady is overplaying it for the camera.

As a bridal alterations seamstress, I would never let a mother and bride sit that long afraid that the dress isn’t going to fit right. When the bride voiced her concerns in the beginning, I would have immediately told her there are several options for adjusting the size of gown. I honestly am not sure that lady is a seamstress, because I’ve specialized in wedding gowns for 5 years, and all of the designer gowns I’ve worked on were designed with extra seam allowance large enough that you can let a bodice out around 3 inches, sometimes more. I don’t see why a corset back was the first option, as I always try to preserve the design of the gown. Of course I didn’t see it in person, but her behavior and recommendations seemed really played up for drama.

Ok I’m a formal bridal stylist. The way they handled that altercation appointment was appalling. Adding a corset happens all the time. Brides lose and gain weight around the time of the wedding because it’s so stressful. I hate that a clip like this could make other brides nervous about potentially not fitting in their dress. I always recommend ordering a larger dress if you’re kind of between sizes (it’s much easier to take in than let out). Putting on a corset back for even complicated wedding gowns takes a good seamstress a day or two to do. Now granted, that has to fit in with their work load and what they’ve already got scheduled but it’s not as big a deal as she made it seem. Also, I don’t appreciate her pressuring the bride to lose weight. The last thing you need is a bride doing a crash/unhealthy diet which tends to make women bloat in weird areas. Just a really sad and poor clip.

@Aubz47
@Aubz47 2 жыл бұрын
@@renownedbandanawearer1345 so typically it depends on the dress itself. Letting out a dress is always a lot more detailed work. If it’s a simple satin dress with no bead work or ruching, it could be a similar time to add a corset and let a dress out. The process to add a corset is usually as simple as removing the zipper and buttons, adding the corset panel, maybe adding matching lace to the panel and attaching the loops. When a dress is let out (if it can be let out) you have to go through the different layers of fabric to let it out on both sides at the existing seams. You then have to rework the top layer to match up, attaching the lace or beadwork to fill in the new gap. Usually the beadwork has to be done by hand. I remember watching one of my sweet seamstress friends work for hours and barely make 2in x 2in’s of progress and she had over 25 years of experience. Letting out a dress is actually pretty complicated and it’s why seamstresses are under appreciated angels

While the corset allows for an on the day fit, I went with zipper as I think it looks better with my particular dress (and having seen the corset version online afterwards I’m glad I chose zip!). I had alterations done 3 weeks before the wedding so it should fit perfectly. It is hard though because when I went shopping I was told to allow 6 months for the dress to be delivered, and then alterations... which is a long time! I then had to postpone my wedding so I was relieved when I went to the fitting and it still fit nicely, after ordering it over 12 months ago!

The "consultant" is Christine Dando, the designer of that dress, and of the Dando London line of gowns. She is also the owner of that shop, and of two others in the UK, if not more than that. She is also a seamstress who alters the gowns. But if a person wants to know about the real sham behind all of these so-called" reality shows, there are several "documentaries" and articles online showing and explaining that the production crews are who actually run everything, and they insist on, demand, and force far more drama than is actually ever present. One has to take all the house hunting, home improvement, bridal, cooking, decorating, etc., etc., etc., shows with a grain of salt the size of Texas, in other words.

She wasn't being rude by asking. A lot of brides diet throughout the alteration process and obviously their fluctuating body weight effects the alterations. As a seamstress, she needs to know if the bride is planning on changing her figure in the 2.5 months leading up to the wedding because it effects her job. If the bride had decided to diet, the alterations would have been less drastic than adding in a corset. That's why she asked.
@rhyfelwrDuw

The bride did admit she had gained weight so it's actually her fault the dress didn't fit, not the lady who was altering it! As I was watching it, I thought "You shouldn't have gained weight then it would have fitted!" I know planning a wedding is stressful and she was probably comfort eating, but I did think they were trying to blame the seamstress!
@renownedbandanawearer1345
@renownedbandanawearer1345 2 жыл бұрын
@@rhyfelwrDuw The statistical likelihood of a woman gaining a little weight in the months/year between ordering the dress and going to the final fitting is so high that failing to account for letting out a few inches in the dress design is kind of the seamstress’ fault in my opinion. That said, I haven’t seen any “blame” towards to the seamstress except for her saying that a corset back is a big job, which I’ve heard it definitely is not. At the end of the day, I think it would be good if we all stopped seeing weight gain, especially such minimal gain, as “fault” of any kind. It’s just something that happens. Human bodies are designed to be incredible at it, so for most people it’s going to be very difficult to avoid.

(*After Birth/Baby Body) It’s amazing what a woman’s body can do... We can make a baby, a human being. Yes, it definitely traumatizes our bodies... Parts of us will stretch, sag or even rip! After being pregnant and/or nursing... Your body will never be exactly the way it was before. I’m NOT saying that you can’t lose all the Pregnancy/baby weight or ever have a flat stomach again... However, it will never go back to exactly the way it was pre-pregnancy/baby. I love the dress she picked and she looked absolutely lovely.

If you know you gained weight, make an appointment earlier or inform the people that you gained a size so they have the time to alter the dress. I wouldn't tell her to lose weight, but I would definitely ask if she plans to lose or gain weight, otherwise she can take the risk to have no dress for the wedding. I’ve never said this in a comment , but I have always thought it . Having to buy your dress months and months before the wedding seems mad . I’d probably end up with an eating disorder trying to stay at exactly the same weight all that time . Also lots of different dresses might pass before your eyes as you marinate in wedding stuff , and make the dress you chose months ago seem to be the wrong choice . Talk about stress . And good heavens , the money ! No more choosing your fabric and your pattern for a competent dressmaker known for success creating wedding gowns . And getting it made two or three weeks before the wedding . Life is so difficult these days with weddings needing to be full scale extravaganzas starring the bride , and not a beautiful day of hope and joy for a man and woman sharing with friends and family.

I’m not a professional dress maker and I don’t have all the special machines and feet etc they do which makes a job so much faster..I honestly think a professional could do it in an hour considering they use tape with loops ready made onto it and it just sits in the slot from the removed zip and gets stitched up .....not a major job or a “ design “ change just a different form of closure... I wonder how much they charged her for that change ?? Also I noticed the dressmaker’s surname is Dando ..... “ Dando of London “ ?? That’s why they push her designs.
