My suit is from Italy (Florence). It is 100% New Zealand dark gray wool and VERY lightweight. When wearing it in the summer heat of Phoenix, Arizona (44C-45C during the summer months), the suit ALWAYS feels like I have an air conditioner operating between my suit trousers and jacket and my skin. I have never once broken a sweat when walking in downtown Phoenix during the summer months. Italy has some marvelous loom technology for making this wool fabric with these qualities. One other thing is the use of a wide-brimmed straw hat with a crown over 115 mm. The sun is super-intense and shade is important. I wear l9ng sleeved shirts and I wear danish wool socks and dress leather shoes. Nothing ultra formal …but it works. And I stay cool!

Normally I don't comment on others comments but living in AZ as well I can definitely agree with you. I have lightweight Wool slacks in both Charcoal and Heather Grey so they both do an excellent job of keeping me cool in the Summer. Linen shirts and Polos are also staples. Enjoy the rest of your Summer.

Texas is a major challenge. The humidity is far, far higher than in hotter Phoenix. Suit jackets are worn here on occasion in the summer for more formal meetings at more formal venues but even these would likely disappear if the weather in Phoenix were more like Dallas, Austin or Houston.

I have always rolled my shirt sleeves three quarters in summer when my jacket is removed . One should always try to keep up certain standards even in the tropics ,after all we are British & need to show a good example to the colonials . I should imagine there would be one hell of a flap going on at the Foreign office ,should a representative of the crown ,be seen attired in tie & short sleeve striped shirt . I think lightweight wool gabardine suits (as well as cotton gabardine) in shades of tan, fawn etc used to be quite common for people like European & North American diplomats in the Middle East & India. I'm pretty sure they were more structured as well & quite conservative in their styling

Just another few points on reflection re: wool gabardine suits - the advantage over cotton is they don't wrinkle heavily and hold their shape well, but they're not as breathable and so they're probably best suited for cooler months of the year in the Middle East when it's 15-25 degrees celsius

Also don’t overlook the importance of choosing the right fabric for your shirts. Go for something like a linen or a linen/cotton blend. Another thing to be very mindful of is your jacket construction. Lightweight and unlined will make a big difference.

Different cultures. In the US, traditionally from Memorial Day (May 30) TO Labor Day (first Monday in September), a seersuck or light tan suit is considered as formal as a navy blue suit, particularly in the Southern states. And a tie with a short sleeved shirt is also considered suitable. We adapt to the temperature. and with climate change, the dates of suitability are extended on both ends to the beginning of May and the end of September at the least. Many men wear the seersucker jacket as a sport coat, usually with navy trousers.

I am so glad you brought up the wearing of a tie with short sleeve shirts. This has been a bug bear of mine for a long time. It gives the appearance of a four year old boy and causes me to wonder if the tie is a clip on one, as the wearer probably does not know how to knot a tie. A serious aggravation to this sartorial offence is wearing short shirt sleeves with a bow tie. You often see this in KZbin videos of law enforcement officers in foreign countries. This takes away all my respect I may have for the officer because, frankly they look comic. Just for the record, we did have clip on ties in the British Police Force, but that was only because it became suddenly fashionable to choke the living daylights out of policemen by pulling the back of the tie and forcing the knot as tightly as possible into the throat.

Ash, I would have to agree on the Short sleeves with a tie. Whenever I see short sleeves and a tie I think of a nerdy engineer that has a pocketful of pens and slide rules. Great advice with the seersucker. I would have to say whenever I think of a diplomat in the Middle East or in the far East I picture a gentleman in white linen suit with a Panama straw hat and Walnut colored brogues. Even in hot climates layering will keep you cool the more skin you expose to the Sun the hotter you will be. Cheers Ron

I own a seersucker suit, and I'm quite fond of it. It's great for Colorado summers in which temperatures reach upwards of 105F (40.5C). As a rule of thumb, I would avoid three-piece summer suits; summer suits are designed to keep you cool, so why add extra layers? In terms of wearing a short-sleeved shirt with a tie, I'd say the answer is "Probably not," but it depends on the exact climate. To elaborate, shorts with a blazer are taboo in almost all of the Western world, but it's fine in the Bahamas. Especially in parts of Central America, traditional suiting rules may not apply. Otherwise, though, stick with Ash's advice and roll up a barrel cuff. Black shoes are best for formal garments, like Ash said. I believe that black shoes should generally only be worn with dark suits - so navy, darker grey, black, or formalwear. With that said, I sometimes break this rule with my opera pumps. For my personal advice to stay warm: - Skip waistcoats, and avoid double-breasted if possible. These all add extra layers. - To avoid sweaty feet, consider white bucks. - The canvas of suit jackets affects the heat of them. A glued canvas is cheap, but it will keep you hotter, even in summer suits. - Wear straw hats like Panama hats or straw pork pies. If you don't mind a vintage look, try a boater. - Try to find shirts in lighter weaves.

I'd like to add another hint to this already great list: - wear *unlined* suits, avoids *any* heat adding canvas, good or bad ones and they look a tad bit more informal because they drape less stiffly ...also I feel I should reinforce this: *wear straw hats, even if you're not a "hat bloke" across the rest of the year* !^^ Best regards Raoul G. I have two summer suits, and would like a couple more. One is a white/blue seersucker, inexpensive, had it tailored. Very comfortable. Bought it about five years ago. The other suit is summer weight wool in a light grey, surprisingly cool. It is not fully lined and not a very tight weave (you can almost see through it), which takes a lot of the weight and close feeling away from it, provides plenty of cooling effect. The fit is a bit looser, allowing for more movement and 'pumping effect' of moving air around. This suit is from the 1950s, bought from a charity shop about 15 years ago, needed little in the way of tailoring. I'd like another seersucker in white/light red (pink), and a somewhat darker wool suit. I have started saving up pennies for the wool. At times, a suit is a suit. Seersucker may appear less formal, but that is easily addressed if you get it with a matching vest/waistcoat. This also allows for evenings where the temps of the day can drop precipitously, just adding the vest allows for some more comfort.

Light and avoid over layering. There is a difference between dry heat and humid heat (same goes for dry cold and humid cold). In case you are in a hot humid country like Singapore 30C and 90% humidity then seersucker is the choice. Cotton/linen sport coat even woven leather shoes. All that keeps you the most comfortable as possible (better than using a three piece suit and blasting your aircon to the detriment of the planet)

Really solid advice from The Chaps Guide. And especially on the short-sleeved shirt with a tie, a look that screams "discount store manager". I will note that a Sea Island cotton short-sleeved shirt, worn open necked, can look fabulous in a casual setting in a hot climate. Dealing with the heat varies tremendously by location. I'll note that most places where it gets seriously hot and humid, usually provide office workers with air conditioning, in offices, residences, and vehicles. Here in Southern England we typically only have a half dozen or so days a year where A/C would be desirable, so its rarely found outside of the newest skyscrapers.

I only live here in somewhat moderately warm Germany, though in an area that has always been annoyingly warm (the Romans made a bulge in the limes to have in the Empire...) and ever more so in the recent years. My go to is currently linen and (maybe somewhat weirdly) a suit made from the same cotton as Chinos (unlined of course) and, if the weather is really annoying, boat shoes instead of derbies. Given that it works so well as a slightly more formal than linen option and in keeping the heat off I plan to order more suits in this material currently projecting at least a suit in an Azure blue and one in the classic light khaki, given how my weird mind works probably as three piece suits. And thank you for the short sleeved shirt with tie comment! I, once more because no comment from me without a reference to health🙄, am not supposed to expose too much skin because I have higher risk of skin cancer as an effect of my Crohn's disease medication, but even without that I prefer. once more, long sleeved but very airy and somewhat "slack" linen shirts, worn with informal cravats in place of any tie or formal cravat. I just realized upon reflection that *all* my summer suits and combinations are somewhere in the spectrum between off-white and brown, mostly Khaki or blue - but it means everything can be easily and beautifully combined with several kinds of blue or brown/ecru accessories and my collection of blue and ivory patterned cotton informal cravats is kept busy in summer. Have yet to try out Seersucker but it's on the list. I always felt it *just* too informal (says the bloke who has several summer jackets with patched pockets...🙄). Probably a next Summer investment. And then there's the most important summer element in my clothing: straw hats! They truly work - and they are insanely superior to any basecap and more formal than the equally efficient but vastly more informal bucket/camping/outdoorsy bush hat. For most men the choice should be the Panama, ideally in fine Ecuadorian straw but this is expensive , or any kind of moderately fine woven straw, heck if you just want to try it out as a summer accessory even paper straw is legit, just don't buy a micro-brim-trilby parody, anyone who does this should go with the more honest baseball cap... Another legit option is the boater for a higher level of formality, love this one. And if your insane and *not* in any wester diplomatic function in Asia or the Middle East (😉) you could wear the pith helmet, ideally in the French (and German but we didn't have colonies all that long) wider brimmed pattern. I have two and wear them once we cross the ~35°C threshold (they are a true blessing in the heat), the truly fun thing for me being that no one even raises an eyebrow about that at this point because a) it's horribly warm, especially in the city, and most people who get to see me commuting around the Rhein-Main area know me by sight by now... 🤣 Best regards Raoul G. I wear a creme linen suit in the hottest months, or a very light cotton, unlined navy blazer. With brown tassel loafers and a genuine Panama hat, in fedora style, one can remain cool and collected, without sacrificing anything in terms of sartorial style. Barrel-cuffed shirts, rolled up to the elbows, are generally always preferable to short sleeve shirts and tend to fit the arms better than short sleeve shirts which, unless one has well-developed biceps, frequently have too-large arm holes that are unflattering to many men. I do have several colourful pin striped, Bengal striped, and madras cotton shirts that are short sleeved that I might wear under that linen jacket or cotton blazer during July and August. And the hottest days of summer are the perfect time to forego a necktie in favour of a light silk scarf knotted around the neck and tucked into the open collar of a shirt. Never, ever wear a tie with a short sleeved shirt, unless you want to look like a delivery person or an employee at a computer repair shop.

I am not a big fan of short sleeved shirts and I think wearing them with ties is a formality clash. Wearing a tie without a jacket to me looks like you're a cubicle drone that has to dress this way due to office dress codes, not that you like the outfit. I think wide linen clothes are very wearable, even in extreme heat, but the trick is that they cannot be as slim fitting as many people like to wear. Maybe you can try very light tropical wools which in my opinion are even better. As some of the other commenters on here suggested the Italians are kings of producing lightweight summer fabrics that breathe better than anything else.

Good advice on shirt sleeves and cuffs. My maths teacher in the 1970's wore the same outfit come rain or shine; a purple modern fabric suit partnered with loafers. This is one of the reasons I choose mainly traditional greys and blues with a few lighter choices. A lightweight 100% wool suit surprisingly comfortable in most business circumstances. With the onset of more casual business wear the linen suit or chino combination can be practical although I will never be brave enough to mix it up in a Michael Portillo fashion.

IMHO shirts with short sleeves is OK if somenone is 6 years old or doing a safari in Africa. A shirt with short sleeves + tie is compeletely ugly, is an uniform of a shift manager at McDonalds. As Ash recommended, if you are really hot, roll up your long sleeves. (Or wear a polo shirt). P.S. But to be honest, just to expose one's forearms to the sun won't really make him feel much cooler in a hot weather. The only reason to roll up the sleeves is while (hard & dirty) working to prevent cuff damage.

Only for sports clothing imo. I think going wider with summer clothes is better than stretchy materials as that means the stretchy clothes are close to your body with the need to expand while the wide fit linen has room to aerate. Also when the stretch fabric is not expanded that would usually mean that the fabric is tighter thus not allowing as much air circulation.

While seersucker is an excellent choice for hot weather, the informality can really limit it’s use. We always see a model wearing a new seersucker that is wrinkled to hell. One shouldn’t have the fabric pressed and it naturally starts to look less formal than it did originally. Dose anyone have any suggestions on maintaining a neat and tidy appearance with this material? Air drying followed by lightly ironing is my current regime.

I MAY use a coarse flannel for a very light pressing of seersucker, but sometimes find the field expedient of leaving under the mattress overnight will serve. Make certain all wrinkles are out of it, or you will find it worse in the morning. If you can, putting it up on a proper fitted suit hanger to make certain it's dry from perspiration (if I'm going to wear it later) helps. The pants I will hang from the cuffs using a clamp-style hanger, and that weight is usually sufficient to take most of the wrinkles.

They've been sold out every time I've checked though but perhaps someday I'll have to check again to see if they've returned. Another fascinating concept I saw was Linen Hoodies but they're not as big yet. Hope you're doing well.

@@Manuel421 Most of the time merino will be pretty warm although still quite breathable. If you like wearing sweaters in the summer I'd suggest more delicate wools like cashmere.

@@teekue Thanks I appreciate it. Sorry for the late response sadly lost one of my dogs so not a good week so far....Should I save my Merino Wool sweater for Spring rather than Summer? It can get in the triple digits out here so a Linen would probably be a bit better. Hope you're doing well.

In hot climates you can wear LINEN suits as well, unless you dislike the wrinkling.

Sandals, shirts (polo), and shorts. That's it. No socks, no undies, commando all the way. That's as good as it gets in the tropics and also saves on laundry.

There is a reason why civilised humans wear underwear ,it’s because those that don’t are not clean living people .

No undies? Crikey! On the contrary, I would have thought that 'no undies' would increase laundry? 🙈

@@quietatse If one wears no underwear ,it would then require one washing their outer garments such as trousers each & every day , not as practical as only needing to wash & dry ones smalls each day or several days of smalls when convenient . Plus one would not want to get downwind of some smelly Herbert who didn’t wear under under briefs .

@@maskedavenger2578 Underwear is necessary with long pants of course but not with shorts. It's just as easy to wash them as a pair of underpants. Of course you should own several pairs and rotate them. Personally, I travel with 3 pairs of shorts and 6 polo shirts.

I would wear a seersucker suit, but my wife won't let me buy one. She says too colonial.

Just say your appropriating the look of the imperialist oppressor for your own low-intensity revolution! Get a French pattern pith helmet while your at it and remind her that the Vietnamese Army *still* wears it and *they* won *the French War* , *the American War* , *the Cambodian Intervention* and *the Chinese War* all back to back!🤣 Best regards Raoul G. For once I have to disagree with you, I believe the short sleeve shirt with a tie and no jacket looks better than a long sleeved shirt rolled up. So much neater and meant to be.

Thanks to the climate crisis, western Canada is roasting in temperatures that this gentleman is finding in Asia. So the discussion sadly applies to Canada too.
