Boy, can I relate. I have, in the past been so self conscious about my appearance and yet now when I look at pictures of myself I wonder what was wrong with my thinking! Now in my early 70’s I am very aware that I can do a lot to enhance my appearance by just taking care of my health and dressing in a flattering way.

Last year on vacation I saw a woman who was probably in her late 70s or maybe in her 80s. She was wearing a spaghetti strap long swimsuit cover up that looked like a dress. Her hair was done. She had on a bracelet. She was just relaxing and I thought to myself she looks beautiful. You can tell how old she is she has wrinkles, but I thought she looked beautiful and she gave me the courage to start wearing, sleeveless tops again.

Kay is right! If we spend all our “getting dressed “ energy trying to hide what we see as negatives, it will be pretty hard to feel confident, relaxed and fully present during our activities. I’ve learned you do what you can to feel well dressed, appropriate and attractive for an event, and then you have to turn your attention from how you look to the reason you are present with these people at this particular time. Let vgomog thinking you have to look your absolute best every time. Show some flabby arms and keep enjoying the event! 😊😊

My grandson , age 4 at the time, did. Last year when he was over eating dinner he asked me “ what is that ?” Pointing at my hanging upper arms. I told him sometimes when people get older they get extra old skin. I told him he can touch them if he wanted. He reached over and grabbed the flab , wiggled it back and forth and said “ gobble, gobble , gobble” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@americafirst9144 I agree with both of the above comments to a degree. There are times, around family and close friends, that “I do me” and can wear the sleeveless, etc. HOWEVER, I do sometimes feel that I am being more courteous and eliminating a distraction from the purpose of meeting if I pay attention and cover up more in order to negate those distractions.

Hi Kay! I’m 62 and a fitness instructor who USED TO have amazingly toned arms I was proud of! WELL, menopause has changed all of that AND I just had shoulder surgery 4 mos ago and am getting my strength back but probably never the tone I want. It bums me out but your encouraging words help a lot and we have to accept this aging thing and do our best. I am grateful to be pain free and able to do all I want in life. Thanks. You approached this subject with grace and positivity!

I have the same problem! I'm 70 and I've covered my arms for decades. This type of arm is actually pretty common. I envy women with slim and toned arms. When fashion turned to 3/4 sleeves, I was very pleased. This type of sleeve is very versatile. Tops with 3/4 sleeves are cool in summer (there are limits!), and warmer when we go into air conditioned areas. So, I see this sleeve style as suitable for many occasions. Thank you for this enjoyable program!

I loved this video Kay. I am 60 years young. I have given birth, raised a family, married the love of my life 40 years ago (and counting), run 5 marathons, built a career, survived breast cancer, and I am blessed to have a grandchild. All of these blessings and accomplishments say more about me than the size or tone of my arms. Nevertheless, I always appreciate learning more about how simple styles choices can enhance beauty and confidence. Something not mentioned in your video is that a soft tan helps arms look more slender, IMO, so I recommend using a self-tanner, along with other nice body products, to feel your best. Great video!
@DebraCole-dr5fy
@DebraCole-dr5fy 2 ай бұрын
The soft tanner is a good idea to make arms and legs look more even toned and hides some imperfections. I am 70 and am beginning to have very few broken veins. This makes them less noticeable. I am also wearing more concealer on "age spots" as our family had a farm and I have the sun spots. I wear products with retinol and moisturize after the bath ALL OVER!!! Be Positive !!

I agree with you about helping our daughters and granddaughters view their bodies in a positive light. I have polycystic ovarian syndrome as do my daughter and granddaughter. As a result we 're all plus size women. When I was first diagnosed when my daughter was young I made the decision to always make positive comments about how I looked and always dressed well. At the time I had no idea that both my child and grandchild would have the same issue. It wasn't always easy but now we"re three generations of confident women who look and feel beautiful and stylish no matter age or size!

Grandparents are a blessing. Mine certainly were! My grandmother had a soft, round body, was the family "chef" and smelled like cinnamon. When she hugged me, I stayed hugged for a long time. Lucky me, I grew up living with my doting grandparents. My grandfather was tall and skinny, but very strong. He was a blast. If I put out my hand, I found money in it, lol. They taught me what '"beautiful' was, and it has nothing to do with your size, but with the good you do and the love you give. If you are friendly, helpful, understanding and generous with your time and consideration, you will look beautiful. Your arms will be the last thing anyone will see or think about. They'll be basking in your light.

Great fashion rules: 1. Horizontal lines will make your body look wider there. 2. Make sure horizontal line on sleeve does not end at widest point of arm. AND, my tip is, if you are large chested. Make sure sleeve doesnt end at your bust line bec it will make a large bust even larger!! 3. Angled sleeves, dolman sleeves, and raglan sleeves are a great camouflage but also draw attention away from large bust.

Yes! Arms are for hugging! Learning how to be a good hugger is an art. It helps if you had big-armed grandmothers and aunties to teach you how. My mother was skinny and withholding and critical of what I now realize was my perfectly normal size. That's why I am learning to love my (larger) arms without putting the trips she put on them.

I refuse to be ashamed of, or apologize for, or cover up for “looking older”, men aren’t, ever! We’re supposed to not comment on their fat bellies and bald heads, so how dare they criticize us just for aging, which no one can control. Women don’t look like models, even when we’re young. My arms are slender, but flabby, it’s from the normal collagen loss of aging, not that I’m fat or don’t exercise!. My Mom was so stressed about covering her older arms every second even in 100+F heat, but I wear sleeveless tops and dresses if I want to. Our purpose as women is not to impress or titillate men. As a Christian woman, I have always dressed modestly (no cleavage, although I do wear short skirts still); I want to look my best, but I don’t want to hide anything just because I’m older, why should we? I wore a sleeveless silk dress today, out mall shopping, under a blazer, but I only added that because I got cold when the wind came up. I need to be lightly dressed inside overheated shops and, especially, fitting rooms. Keeping cool in one’s 60s is challenging enough without having to cover my arms and legs because of outdated ideas of what’s “age-appropriate”. Age-appropriate is exactly what each woman determines for herself.

I think it’s ok to have things we see as our best features and play those up and ok to have things we think are not our best features. Not that we “don’t like” that part; but maybe that we would rather not call particular attention to. It’s ok, as long as we realize that it’s not a big deal, and probably less so to everyone else. That said, I want to say how generous it is of you, exposing a feature that you consider to be less than your best and sharing how you work around it to feel your best self.

A year ago, at age 63, I was diagnosed with lipedema in both my arms and legs, and it explains so much! Especially why, after losing 100 pounds and getting down to a size 2, I still saw that my upper arms, thighs, and calves are still abnormally large for my size with these weird pockets of nodules. Anyway, I'll always be disguising my upper arms and appreciate the suggestions.

One thing I do as the warmer months come is pay close attention to the skin on my arms. By using a good body lotion, taking care of dry elbows and maybe even using a touch of self tanner I am more confident in wearing my sleeveless tops and dresses.

Great video, Kay! I'm so glad you addressed this issue so eloquently and tastefully. I've been a weightlifter and fitness fiend my whole life and loved my arms, but since turning 60 (63 now), the skin at the bend of my elbows has become crepey and I have lots of sun spots. So even though my arms are toned well, I still don't like them anymore. We're our own worst critic, aren't we?! My husband and friends said they never noticed that stuff until I pointed it out. So you're right about doing our best, using these tips, but just getting out there and living joyfully. Thank you for the encouragement and tips. I pray I use both well! ❤

As always Kay, you are right on, thank you! Love your videos, your encouragement and your positive attitude. I care about how I look and feel but never dress to please others. You talked about choices and style in a previous video. It was then that I realized that I actually make specific choices because I like a certain style for myself. I’ve always been told that I have a smile that lights up a room and puts people at ease…that’s what I concentrate on because I believe people see our ‘light’ first. Again, thank you for your time and videos. They always give me something new to think about. ❤

I always appreciate your content, positive attitude and your ability to help us in keeping our insecurities in perspective. My wonderful mom, who is now deceased wore sleeveless tops at 80. She was confident, fun loving and lived life to the fullest! That is what is remembered about her!! On one occasion we were having a conversation about dresses and how the styles I love most always seemed to be sleeveless. I was considering eliminating sleeveless dresses from my closet, swearing them off for my future, to which she said, "If people don't like what they see, maybe they shouldn't look"!!! She was a hoot! :-)

I think you are incapable of "stepping on anyone's toes"! You are so kind and positive in your approach to dressing. Your success is in balancing the desire to be attractive and the desire to be comfortable. You do both at the same time. Bravo! I have been using some of your tips for disguising my wrinkly arms (I"m 79), but I live in SW Florida and when it gets really hot, I just let my arms hang out in the heat. But, for occasions, I now enjoy throwing a scarf over that sleeveless dress or I tie a pretty cardigan around my shoulders, or I wear a linen shirt like a jacket, and those accessorize the outfit as well as they distract from the wrinkles. Thanks for all your advice on the different sleeve shapes, and for your friendly presence on youtube.

Thanks for the great suggestions and links! Other things you can do are: 1.). make sure to moisturize your arms/body (maybe use a retinol moisturizer at night), 2.) use a SPF 50+ to prevent age spots on arms/hands, 3.) use a moisturizer w/ a “shimmer” effect or one w/ a sheer tint. e.g. Coppeertone Glow Shimmer, Jergens Sunless Tanners, Vaseline Cocoa Glow, etc.

I’ve always been petite with nice looking arms but bam! Menopause changed all that! Now I have the jigglies 😮Your ideas for making them look their best are spot on. As a sewist I know you can do an adjustment to make sleeves fit our individual bodies but you just can’t do much with ready to wear clothes. Also make sure the bust and back of your top fit properly and have the proper ease, that will also minimize your arms. Too snug and it draws attention to all those areas. Dolman sleeves, light and breezy shirts or toppers are my go to. Thank you for bring attention and solutions to this area of our changing bodies.

Kay. I’ll bet you anything that if you cut out bad oils like vegetable oil those bumps on your arms will go away. Worked for me. After having them for decades they went away immediately and permanently (as long as I don’t eat greasy foods at restaurants that still use vegetable oil) as soon as I switched to avocado oil.

Thanks Kay for these tips; personally i like your arms, they are shapely & seem in proportion to your body. Ive never liked mine as they seem too skinny. Now that im older they're still skinny but flabby too. Ive worn tank tops or shells with an over blouse thats has a half or 3/4 sleeves in sprng, summer and fall when im out, but short or sleevless when im home. I like those sheer sleeves for dressier activities, very feminine & romantic. Have a blessed day & thanks again.

Thank you for this!! Now approaching 64, menopause is finally going away, but hormonal issues, weight loss surgery, and subsequent weight gain have caused my bat wings, which were never a problem in my younger years, as I was quite slim in my 20s-30s. I was also active and also used weights, especially in my 40s and 50s, but it seems I've got some family DNA where the big upper arms come from. I've not been happy with the current situation, but I'm working with the "here and now." I do wear many of the types of blouses and coverups you show in this video, but do wear sleeveless tops with a coverup as needed. I'm slowly working to get my upper arms toned along with weight loss so I can go back to wearing my fitting blazers and long sleeved blouses, but one day, I'll get back there. Keep the videos coming!!

Hi Kay! I appreciate this video. As a former amateur cross-country rider and stable owner, I once had ripped biceps AND triceps. A near 2 decades later with a new career of sitting professionally, my triceps need their own life-alert and my biceps, which still pretty strong, are shy enough to hide under a protective layer of fluff. I love cover-ups. I adore the 3/4 sleeve in general, for I also do not need/want more sunshine on my shoulders (red-head, glow-in-the-dark-skin, blueish eyes). I have found two things I adore in tops: prints and spandex. LOVE me some stretch and prints in general help my upper arms blend in with my torso. I find as along as I do not exuberantly wave madly at someone, all is well. I probably will not ever get into a tank without some kind of pashmina, cover-up, loose overshirt or darling cardi, but that is okay with me. I sooo appreciate having strong arms (still) and if I had thought I wanted to work those triceps out, I would have. I did not, and well, at 65, as long as my sweet husband thinks I am beautiful and my kids say I am the best hugger due to my schmooshiness, all is well! Have a great and beautiful day!

I can get through some years without showing my upper arms. I have the swinging flab and always seem to be waving at somebody when my arms are out in the open! But my brother wanted me to come see his pool a few years ago and so I had to put on a BATHING SUIT in front of all of the family. I decided I would just scoop the gnats off the water and not swim. So I could put on Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs on legs and arms. And not wave at anybody. I was no longer bumpy and blotchy. I had to catch a dog at some point and wound up IN the pool - and that stuff stayed put!!! So if I ever have to go out in a shift dress, I would absolutely apply that stuff to my arms. It really helped MY confidence. Thank you for another great video.
