In the 50s and onward, your petticoat was call a crinoline. Better to do as you mentioned, keep in on its own. Easier to iron your dress without having the petticoat sewn to the dress. Also, there are two kinds of netting to use with skirt. Tulle which is smoother and softer, netting which is crunchier and irritating on your skin. A true crinoline would have at least three layers: tulle-netting-tulle. And when your first crinoline looses its “oomph”, make a new one and put the older on top of the new on. I once wore 4 crinolines to get a really good “sticky out” effect. They were fun to play with! You could also put a plain half slip underneath the crinolines!

Yeaaaah! I love a wearable mockup. Then you're not doing all that work for nuthin'! Glad the FBO is working out for you. Both are super cute dresses! Having one separate petticoat's the way to go..."petticoat netting" or not, it's still tulle, and therefore EVIL. That tuck-the-strap-into-the-lining trick is great!

The dress is lovely. It looks really good on you - your smile says it all. And yes, the petticoat makes such a difference. It's amazing how just a little bit of fabric can change the hang of the dress. If you wore a 1950's style petticoat underneath you could become airborn... Look at you go, Ms. Drew. Tracing off the pattern and doing a FBA. It's amazing to watch your progress over this last year, well done. I just got a 1937 Simplicity sewing book from the ebay - in it they suggest doing a rough fitting with the pattern pieces against your body (before you cut into the fabric), make any changes necessary and then cut the mock-up. They also suggest using basting stiches for the mock-up to make it easier for alterations. And to mark a line along centre front and back as well as doing a horizontal line at the bust - apparently it makes things easier to fuss with. Right now I'm tracing off a pattern for my first ever pants - cigarette style trousers from a vintage 1950's pattern. The sizing up is going to be a journey - I bought the pattern to match my 38 bust, but, apparently, the average was about 10" skinnier than my actual hips. I'm hoping it won't be too bad and won't take 10 mock-ups to figure out. Fingers crossed, salt tossed, prayers ongoing, incense lit. I have a wardrobe of sewing ahead of me. I spent the last few months combing through the ebay looking for plus-size patterns from the 1930's, 40's and 50's. I now have enough - different style bodices, different style skirts, different styles of dresses, blouses, pants/shorts, underpinnings and outerwear. I picked the middle of the century to work from. I figured the prices aren't about to go down any time soon, so I might as well take the plunge now. Am I justifying? I may be justifying... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

@@SewSewDrew I fell in love with Audrey Hepburn's 'Beat' outfit the first time I saw 'Funny Face' - black turtleneck and cigarette trousers... slay me now... How these will work on round and short me, we'll see. I keep telling myself it's all about proportions. Then I go back to trying to figure out pant geography. You will make a pair, I have no doubt. It's just a matter of when. Because you would look So cute in a pair. Honestly I'd put the pants off, but the woman I bought them from on the ebay is peer pressuring me for pictures of a finished pair. Haven't yet broke it to her that I work at a snails pace.

Oh My Gosh! Both dresses look great. I agree with you on the Petticoat. That’s a lot of work. Making one that you can wear with several different dresses is a brilliant idea. When I sewed for my daughter when she was little and the dress had a petticoat or tulle I would put it between the lining of the dress and the main fabric so that it wouldn’t scratch her skin. You look Fabulous in that style.

Thanks Drew, for taking us along with you for this make! I really love the dresses and the pattern. What are your thoughts about the petticoat being scratchy to wear? Someone on pattern review mentioned that. So I chose tulle instead of petticoat netting, knowing it won't be as full. I'm going to make a separate petticoat to keep it versatile. I "may" (cough) have bought 3 or 4 fabrics already to make several versions of this pattern. And I haven't even traced it off yet! 😉 Also interested in your thoughts on how the straps fit and if they were hard to get positioned so they sit properly. Yours seem to sit well and you talked about adjusting them for your best fit. I saw another video where the maker had a hard time with the straps continually falling. She did mention she didn't test the fit when she inserted them. Just put them were the pattern was marked. Suddenly I realize I think I've been stalking this pattern! 😄

You do such beautiful sewing The dresses both look so great! The batik dress is lovely with the grey belt & shoes Nobody answered the batik question, so, I will do my best to answer(see below) . PS, later I checked, and Google showed some more thorough answers than my original answer . In the old days, batik was a style of dyeing/painting that used a form of wax resist, called "batik". lines or shapes were drawn, painted (or "printed", stamped, like with a wooden or rubber design) in wax on white fabric, then dyed. For fancier designs, wax was then used to draw on some of the dyed areas, then re-dyed a darker color. The wax would preserve the color of whatever it was drawn onto. Batik fabric is often very much the same patterns on front and back because of the process. A batik design can be printed on fabric, but, since that is not an original dyed fabric, it will look much like any printed fabric. I think I should add that with almost every method of dying fabric, the original dyed fabric will have a backside that is almost the same level of color saturation as the front. For example "tie dye", or other forms of "binding" that occlude portions of the cloth from the dye. I think none of them would be called batik. But, I can't explain better than that.

I was just going to ask whether I needed to attach the petticoat to the skirt! I already have a petticoat for a 1950s dress that I made myself back in the olden days, when I was young. If I can just use that, all the better. Also, the easestitching. Can I just use pins to ease the stitch, or is it too long of an ease to try to pin it to death? 😂 Let me know your thoughts, and thanks for the tutorial!

It’s called knit copying drama by a channel called Emma in the moment. This one is more knit than crochet which is why I commented as I did 😊. If you want to learn crochet I recommend trying different teachers/way of learning. I could never get it when my mum tried to teach me but a KZbin video worked and knitting I picked up through a book
