If you want to go to trial in L.A., public defenders are usually your best bet unless you literally have hundreds of thousands to spend. They have the most trial experience and can get all kinds of experts and investigators for free. One of my law school professors was an LA county public defender. He's gotten not guilty verdicts on capital murders before. Also with noting that most people on death row in California were represented by court appointed private attorneys. So free but not true public defenders. True public defenders got more cases reduced from death than the court appointed private counsel.
