I bought a drapers counter from a men’s outfitters that closed about 45 years ago, to store my tools in. About 8 or so years ago I no longer wanted it and after writing up the provenance of where I got it offered it to various high profile antique dealers and the sock manufacturers who supplied it to the dealers in the first place. My asking price was £300 which I had researched and thought was fair to shift it quickly. Several of these dealers were very disparaging and snobby and tried to offer silly money for it. Drew Prichard on the other hand replied straight away, telling me he had rarely seen either a display cabinet or indeed many other items with such good provenance and snapped my hand off at my asking price. He sent an associate down to collect it promptly. I had great pleasure in replying to the other dealers telling them that I had sold it for my asking price.

The problem is, that the people of Bath, are more astute, and know when they are being ripped off. Even though this area of Avon is far more affluent than North wales, profit margins will be smaller, as prices are higher for second hand antiques or household junk.

Many years ago ( about the 80s ) on daytime Radio 2, a very famous DJ ( can't remember who )was asking listeners to find peoples names that suited their profession...... ones like Butcher, carpenter are obvious but he had to scrupulously check one particular name out before he could broadcast it. It was in antiques dealer called Robin Bastard . It was a genuine business with a sign above the shop with that name. It is probably fair to say that all "antiques" are a rip off and every dealer and every shop tries to buy cheap and inflates the selling price .

His own costs travelling with Tee and the van itself and fuel, overnight accommodation. Employers responsibilities such as sick pay, National Insurances on each member, taxes and Holiday Pay. The Business rates for the Buildings. Bank Charges. Maintenance of the Properties, Electricity, gas, water, phone charges, tools etc for the workshops, Accountancy and more. Not forgetting there is 20% Vat on Sales. Also taking into consideration he might buy an item and not sell it for months? After all that, he needs to make a profit. It is so easy for those who have never had the balls to try and run a business to come up with daft statements such as he is ripping people off. Try it? You will soon regret?

Yes its all for tv and nothing else . There are far to many antique programmes on tv they are just dong it to death because shows like this are cheap to make and people on the whole think its genuine but i have seen many of these types of programmes made and they are not what you think they are most of the shows are all arranged well in advance with the shop owners and they even no what they're going to buy and how much they will pay as i say its all just for tv and has nothing to do with the real antiques trade which is a great and fascinating business. All the tv stuff is just all edited and fake which is annoying because they are not being honest with the viewers

My defiinition of A 'Good Business' man, or Woman is one that doesn't abandon their Moral Compass, when making deals. Yes individuals can always reject an offer, but how many times have we seen the man 'rip-off' newbies to the antique world. Now and again a 'pang' of concsience may kick in, when he will offer more than an asking price, but that is usually the exception to the rule. In such matters he is inconsistent with his conduct!

Not sure why people are labelling him a "con" or "rip off" ? He is a business man whose intention is to make as much profit as he can. If he paid £100 for an item and sold it for £100 his profit would be £0. Take into account his overheads and costs you are then talking about a heavy loss. Business is about profit. When you go to a shop and pay say £5 for an item, the shop is making a profit... Thats how shops work... It's no different to any business. Buy low, sell high is the optimum agenda for all in business. He hasn't robbed anyone? If someone is willing to sell an item then the resale price thereafter is nothing to do with them. I have given away loads of things for free that people have resold. Good on them for doing so.
