I don’t often watch the pencasts as they can be a little long sometimes, and I dislike cutting off in the middle of them if the need arises. In this case, I was watching something else, fell asleep and woke up listening to Drew cackle about pulling Pilot’s stickers off while Brian was giving Drew’s looks that would freeze “Johnny, Flame On” in the cartoons! I woke up, rewound (started from the beginning) and watched. I loved the part in which you named each other’s autobiography’s. Now, I don’t know Brian’s life to save my soul, but he seems to be the genuine article from this side of the tv screen out here in KZbin land. It truly was a blessing to hear such nice things said about someone you work with (& for). Drew, your stock just jumped up 25 points in my book. Thanks for all the effort and work you both show through these videos. May your lives and business continue to thrive and increase for the both of you. 👍😎😇🙏

I haven’t gotten through the whole pencast yet but I just had to comment about the heartwarming feeling i got from hearing you both talk about your auto biography titles. The love and respect you have for each other is one of the main reasons I watch. It speaks volumes to the type of humans you are and it’s really encouraging to know that there are business owners that TRULY care about their employees. When you’re ready for the biopic, hit me up, I’ll make it happen. 🎬 Thanks for keeping it real Brian and Drew💜

Are there different types of wetness? How does humidity factor into this? I found a website that discusses the different types of wetness according to over a hundred different types of water, and here are my findings....." Drew ***staring and fiddling with his fountain pen*** Gosh, I love the rabbit hole talks you guys engage in.......thank you for being you.

As someone who goes down a rabbit hole or two myself, I love your deep dives, Brian! I learn something very interesting that I didn't even know I needed to know. 😂
@j.s.matlock1456 Жыл бұрын
Actually, the "wetness" of water depends on its surface tension. Surface tension is what causes water to "bead up" on a surface. To make water really "wet" requires the addition of a surfactant to decrease the surface tension of a liquid and cause it to spread out. It's the same stuff in your dishwasher and in the car wash that gives you the spot free rinse. So, relatively speaking, water really isn't that wet. 🤣😉

Hi there, artist here, on the topic of Orange, it's an extremely narrow part of the spectrum subjectively. Unlike blues which are a fairly wide part of the spectrum in what folks would recognize as 'blue' or 'a blue', orange can easily veer into copper, terracotta, peach, salmon, coral, or directly into pinks, reds, and yellows. When it comes to ink, Sailor Kin-Mokusei is my current go to as it's very rich, shades nicely, and has a reddish sheen. Iroshizuku Yu-yake also works, though it has a slightly more pink tone to it. Hope this helps!

An interesting thing to consider when looking at ink color is if the color is from a single dye chemical or multiple ones mixed together. I’ve seen some rather unique results when dying fabric and yarn when a dye color was a mix and the different colors strike (attach) the material at different speeds. Could be fun to do some paper chromatography on various inks to see the colors separated. I remember doing such chromatography on black inks with students to show how different brands had different formulas.

Artist and Dyer here. When you deepen orange it is brown. Orange is red and yellow mixed together. You can have a wide variety of orange when but that hue has a wide range of names, like coral, peach, copper, All orange. Orange and yellow are very light in value (how light or dark something is). Lastly with dyes depending on the other chemicals and type of dye it can bond with the fiber on a molecular level. They are always transparent. Pigments stay on the surface and need binder to hold it on the surface.

Question, since you spoke of the specialty nibs on the Esterbrook. Can you elaborate on the nibs. The writing samples make 3 of them look really similiar, so what are the differences btw the Jounaler, the Scribe and the Techo? I have a vintage Waterman, a pocket pen in sterling that it just a joy to write with. The nib is just wonderful. This pen is so well constructed and balanced. For a pen that is probably 70's maybe even older. The capping and posting is so satisfyingly smooth and secure and has left no marks on the sterling. The pen far 2:19:04 exceeded my expectations. I do agree that the new offerings don't look exciting, but if the build or writing experience matches my vintage, then Waterman would be a pen to choose.

I understand why you don't sell Waterman, but they offer a wide range of pens - in Europe at least - from student pens to the more expensive. While not flashy, I've never had a Waterman pen with a bad nib. I miss their "Havana" ink - "Absolute Brown" (the new name) doesn't have the same vibe.

It wasn't mentioned here, but I love Kaweco Orange. It's a bit like Apache Sunset, but has more pizzazz for me. It shades in brown tones rather than red.

Yep, from the orange spectrum I have Diamine Blaze Orange and a single cartridge of the Kaweco. Last week I decided to use it as I was puting it off because I thought that it would be like the Diamine's which I use as an underlining ink. I was pleasantly surprised by how readable the Kaweco orange was. A bottle of it is definetely on my next shopping list.

For the orange inks, I also love that color. The most vibrant I've found is Sailor Kim-mokusei. It's vibrant but readable. Happy it was mentioned here. The Waterman Carene was my grail pen that I bought for my 40th birthday. I love the look of that nib. I also love their ink. they are stable and thrustworthy. That being said, it's true that they are not bringing anything new and only sell their existing product

I chose Caran d'Ache for my orange ink... all things being equal, just go for whichever has the niftiest bottle.

I'm always hunting for more orange inks - along with teal, it's my favorite ink color. I've used virtually every one mentioned in the podcast. And while Diamine Pumpkin is pretty vibrant, it pales next to Kobe #11 Ikuta Orange - it's the only orange ink that looks brilliant even in an XF Preppy. Diamine Fire Embers is also great, but leans more toward red.

I too have recently been searching for the perfect orange ink. I haven't found it yet. The ones I've tried so far have been too light, too red, too pink, or too brown. My favorites so far are Diamine Blaze Orange and Laban Apollo Orange. I have some more samples coming and hopefully I'll find an orange I love.

UPDATE: I've now tried Noodler's Southwest Sunset, Operation Overlord Orange, and Habanero. Nice inks. Not my perfect orange. I've also tried Kaweco Sunrise Orange, Van Dieman's Apricot, and Robert Oster Orange. The winner: Robert Oster Orange. To my eyes it is a perfect bright, vibrant orange. I'm sure I'll try more, but I think I'll be getting a bottle of the Robert Oster. PS Does anyone else call Robert Oster Bobby Oyster or am I just a goober?

My first fountain pen was Waterman, and I loved it and took it everywhere with me ... but then I either lost it or it was stolen. I later replaced it with a Waterman Hemisphere which I still have, but it doesn't flow particularly well ... likely because I didn't learn how to truly care for a fountain pen until I ran across you guys and bought my first pen from you all: the Pilot Metropolitan with the 1.1 stub ... which is still one of my favorite pens. And I've obtained all of my new pens through Goulet (and one vintage Pilot from a used pen vendor which I also love!). My current favorite is my brass Lilliput, and I have the rose gold Kaweco Sport arriving tomorrow. Yay!! Kaweco is my current favorite pen company. :)

Suggestion for disconnecting kids from screens: my family required us to take swimming lessons every year. Even though we hit a point where we knew what we were doing, swim lessons were a family requirement. If nothing else, it got us outside for an hour or so and it made us more excited to go to the pool all the way around. I’m not sure how old your kids are (sounds like younger), but it’s a necessary skill and helps them disconnect a bit. My dad also had a rule that we had to spend two hours outside beyond that. Didn’t matter what we were doing (I was usually sat under a tree reading tbh), but 2 hours on top of swim lessons. Just as often, we ended up getting sucked into a chore or something that someone else was doing. All in all, it worked out pretty well, and let us be introverted still. Just a thought-obviously I don’t know your family, but a variation might suit, too. Good luck with the driveway!

I don't have any interest in Waterman pens, but I would love it if you still carried their inks. Cost, ease of use and beautiful colors make them some of my favorite inks

12:22 speaking of making an ink mess and pens that have (invisible) holes... When I was in high school (i think this was around 1989), I had a Parker fountain pen and i liked to put the end of the barrel in my mouth. Like chewing bic pens, but with the (metal) end of a fountain pen 😂 At some point it started to taste weird 🤮 and it turned out the cartridge got loose and the barrel obviously wasn't totally closed... So that ink was in my mouth. Yuk 🤮 I think I never used that pen anymore and couldn't smell Parker ink without really getting that taste in my mouth again 😂

I have a vintage Pilot Myu that I got from Japan, and it still had the sticker on it, including the price in Yen, which charms me, and I left it on. Otherwise off they go.

Waterman is a classic. Certainly not the best. At least not nowadays. But if you enjoy mainly classic conservative-styled pens, Waterman is certainly a good option. I have a few. Their inks are very good and can be found at reasonable prices. As far as their ink bottles go.... Some of the best in the industry. One, they look good. More important, they are pragmatic. Just a tiny bit of ink left? Tip the bottle on its side. It stays on its side. Now, you can collect that last bit of ink into your fountain pen. Waterman does not get the credit it deserves for having not just a good-looking ink bottle but a functional one that does more than just hold ink. I recall Brian mentioning another time years ago that when they had Waterman, the brand didn't sell well. Which is unfortunate. But as a business owner you have to cater to your core customer base. With regards to the Waterman Phileas.... It's named after the character Phileas Fogg from "Around the world in 80 days." By: Jules Verne. (Excellent novel, worth reading.) Yes, very inexpensive. But before the days of disposable fountain pens, the Phileas was how you got younger generations interested in F.P. use. Sold separately or as a kit that included everything needed to get started in writing. Nicer and more comfortable than a Parker Vector F.P., you could get the Phileas as a ballpoint, or a roller-ball. My father's favorite pen was a Phileas ballpoint that I gifted to him many years ago. Despite being inexpensive, he loved it. Used it often and carried it until the day he passed away.

Drew: They (the pens) are not very organised. *proceeds to bring out a box with pens in pen cases. 🤨 I think Drew's idea of 'organisation' is different from the rest of us normal people.😏 + Unrelated sidenote:I wonder what happened to that Pizza Hut lamp. Would we get to see a picture of it hanging in Drew's house one day?

Orange is a fickle one indeed - I stranded on Iroshizuku Yu-Yake and Fuyu-Gaki, the latter being more of a reddish hue, hinting on bordeau wine (or a reddish, of course), the former being the more vibrant one, hinting on a candlelit pumpkin. Both being sufficiently intense and dark to remain legible, the more fiery one sometimes bordering on that 'neon/marker' feeling. Choose your paper and nib-gushiness wisely...
