I have spilled ink on my dog. Short story. I had a yellow labrador. A great dog but always hungry. I was in the kitchen cleaning and planning on inking up a pen with a 4ml sample of Emerald 9f Chivoire. I had the ink sample open and turned to find my lab underfoot hoping for a snack. The whole.sample vial fell on his back. We went outside and he got to play in the hose. He was still blue/green and sparkly for over a week. It did come off the kitchen floor with a little work.

My daughters boyfriend collects fountain pens. I love pens and paper, etc. but haven’t used a fountain pen. On Mother’s Day, they gave me my first fountain pen, filled with a beautiful ink, from his collection. It was a perfect fit! It’s only been a few weeks, but I’m pretty much only using FP’s. I got a few inexpensive FP’s and small bottles of ink. So fun. Love you guys!

Brian, you have achieved a thing I first heard of as a knitter with yarn: SABLE, Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy. I agree, clearing out all the stuff in my parents' house after my mom died made me go through a series of purges. Also I have periodic political panic where I feel imprisoned by my stuff and unable to consider fleeing the country, which is a whole other issue....

I love how you guys are able to tell your story about getting into fountain pens with as much passion as ever, even though you answered it a hundred times before, and bringing something new to the discussion every single time. For me, I had used calligraphy pens before, but I had never considered using them as a daily experience. One day, I opened a drawer of pens to try and find one that worked, but every single pen I picked up wasn't working. I immediately decided to throw them away and get my first fountain pen, simply because I was sick and tired of having drawers and pens that didn't work. Then when I wrote with it, I was in love.

Similar to Brian's story, I got into fountain pens back in 2020 when we had more time to sit around at home.😉My IG feed was filled with journal friends showing off and raving about how much they love their TWSBIs. Decided to see what the "hype" was all about, and fell fast & deep into the fp rabbit hole. ✍The variety of pen designs, inks, and certain paper combination made my journal hobby so much more fun during such a challenging time. Ever since then, I've been a (TWSBI) fp lover and can certainly see the hype surrounding fountain pens! Plus, the community is just so encouraging, helpful, knowledgeable, and supportive! 💖🥰

Brian, you should read this book called the gentle art of Swedish death cleaning. It is not as morbid as it sounds. It's a very good book that addresses the things that are important to you vs clutter. I'm 40, I've been married 20 years, raised two kids and moved to different countries due to our lives in the military. We have accumulated a lot of stuff and feel it's time to declutter. This book has been a great resource. You are never too young to go through this process.

I like Drew's idea for a pasta pen. The idea reminded me of the customizable travel mugs that are made of a double-walled clear plastic and you can slip a piece of paper in between to add your own design. I'd love that in a pen so I could change out the look with anything I could print on a piece of paper (or glitter papers, textured papers, etc).

I gifted a pen to one of my friends - a Scriveiner Copper EDC that I was no longer using. I gave him some Diamine Red Dragon to use with it. He left it in his pocket, and after it was ran through his washer and dryer, the ink leaked out and stained all of the clothes a light pink... when he saw the pen, I kid you not, the nib was folded back around the feed. Funnily enough, he managed to ply the steel back in place, giving him a tremendously scratchy stub... but it was pretty much done for.

I have other, what I call, "old school" hobbies. My ideal moment in life is to be sitting in my leather, wingback chair, journaling with a Pineider Quill nib, and my grandchildren run up to me and say, "Gigi! Read us this Christmas book?" I'll take the leather-bound book, pull out my churchwarden pipe, stuff it with tobacco, and read to them by the fire. Thats happiness!

Another episode where afterwards I sit up in bed researching weird stuff. This time, it's Coprolites, (fossilised dinosaur dung). For some bizarre reason, where we live in Royston, England, in the town centre, we have a bronze sculpture of coprolites, and thanks to the pencast, I now know why. Apparently, in the 19th century, there was a big local industry around coprolite mining, as it was found to be a very good fertiliser. Who knew? Well, now I do, thanks to Brian's reference when discussing odd materials to manufacture pens from😊😊 Thanks guys, informative and entertaining as ever.

The pencast is the highlight of Friday, perfect start of the weekend. I'm glad you're still doing it and hope you keep doing it :) While listening to the question about nib wetness, I have a related sort of more subjective question. Which nib (medium, broad, stub, ...) you think better displays properties of ink? Or does this differ by property? Like are stubs better for shading, but broads for sheen/shimmer? Is there some property of the nib that shows the ink the best (wetness, wide line,...)?

Drew, always LOVE your shirts! Thanks Brian and Drew for great pencasts and products. I’ve got things on my wishlist for when I get over my Lamy spending binge this month. I’m still overwhelmed with the Lamy, but at least I have given my pens from my collection some overdue TLC, and I promised them I’d use them (an aside whisper: “when I’m done loving on the new Lamy pens”). Yeah, they’re nice too. And they’re jealous.

Drew: The base element for Damascus is iron. The folding traps carbon in the layers making steel. It's one of the earliest processes for making steel before the invention of the Bessemer process. I can see how you could accomplish it, but it would be a lot of work and would be a really heavy pen. For glass, if you could get "Gorilla Glass" (Owens-Corning brand name) in rods I could see it working. Gorilla glass is very commonly used in mobile phone screens. For a more practical crystaline option I would suggest aluminium oxide. The mineral is known as Corundum or Sapphire. Being very durable, but easier to work than diamond (also cheaper) I think it would be a good option. I know you can get lab created rods. Great work guys, love the show.

I recently left my prized and only fountain pen, a Montblanc 149 clipped to the collar of my t shirt while i ran it through the wash. luckily it was set to warm but the cap did manage to loosen itself completely off from the pen and empty an entire fresh filling of jacques herbin's Blue Ocean(No staining on any of my clothes) leaving my nib vulnerable to being bent. as it was, curved upwards resembling a hook. i took it to a local nibmeister in Victoria B.C. "Simply the best". and he further damaged my pen by attempting to to manipulate my gold nib while it was still attached to the pen, leaving gouges on the bottom side of the feed. the nibmeister refused to take accountability for gouging my feed. it is now being serviced with MontBlanc directly. hoping it comes back writing like it did before. PS: got myself a pilot preppy 0.5 to use until i get my 149 back and i can't believe amazing it flows

My favorite parts of this pencast: 1) The marvel of what it would be like to stand in front of a 4,000 year-old tree, how significant that is at the same time as how insignificantly small we are in the universe. 2) The pasta pen idea "Fountain Penne" 3) The statistical thought provoking question of why haven't we accidentally put our foot into the pocket of our pants by mistake.

By bean paste, they mean adzuki bean, which is used to make a sweet paste used in everything from rice cakes and mochi to ice cream and bingsu to just slathered on bread with salted butter. It's used in a lot of Asian dishes and desserts, and I believe it went to Japan through Korea and China as it was a mainland dish for a long time. Just like chocolate, it isn’t sweet by itself but works well with sugar and tastes great. I bet Brian would love it as it’s amazing with chocolate.

Kohakuto is kind of like a gummy candy, with a crunchy shell on the outside. Like you mentioned, it’s agar jelly so not the same texture as a gummy candy in the US. A lot of Asian desserts use red beans and black beans. If you’ve had a sesame ball, the filling is usually lotus paste or black bean or red bean paste. Sesame balls are from China, but the filling is similar to desserts from other Asian cultures that use red bean and black bean paste :)

good call on the Pilot Signature nib on print Drew! That Beef Nuggets really show the quirk of Pilot gold nibs that I frankly don't always really dig because of the variation, its hard to be NOT inconsistent because I'm too used to Sailor nibs writing so lightly with a grippy feedback. Perhaps the Signature nib's variation makes user's unique hand even more emphasized, not necessarily just for writing signatures

Sailor Mochi pens! Married to a Korean and there are a number of cross-overs in food. The bean paste you were referring to is made from sweet beans, not Western-minded chili beans or whatever you picture when you think of beans. If you've had a variety of mochi (not the ice cream variations) you've eaten bean paste. Sometimes it's red bean paste - sweet, but it can also be green - very sweet. Highly recommend if you ever have a chance to try or access to a Japanese or Korean bakery!

Hey Brian and Drew -- question: how does one know whether a bulb syringe is dry and safe for storage? Also, how does one know when it's time to change a bulb syringe? Cheers

Brian, if you like the idea of a damascus pen, take a look at the Japanese metalworking technique of mokume gane. It's similar to damascus but made by layering dissimilar metals like copper, steel, and gold instead of different alloys of steel.

Combining Brian's amber idea and Drew's empty cavity to put a small amount of sand etc., how about a pen that will take different types of blind caps. There could be an actual amber one with bug fragments, a clear one with a cavity to put tiny things in, as well as other type with small fragments, with a standard thread so the cap or filler could be swapped out as desired. Ladies and gentlemen, presenting the Retro 51 Whimsy!

Most if the Benu pens (M and B, anyway) are really wet. Non standard favorite nibs are Waverley, Music, Architect and, of course, the Mag 600. And, of course, the Franklin-Christoph SIG nibs (smoother than a crisp italic).

Drew, Ben Walsh from Gravitas had both red and black linen micarta pens for sale at the California Pen Show. Wish I had had the cash to buy them as they were amazing to feel and almost weightless. The pens were also beautiful to look at. He still has the red on sale at his site if one were so inclined.

Agar is a firm gelatin derived from seaweed. Kohakuto is a similar texture to those orange jelly fruit slice candies if I remember right. Tsukimi means moon and dango are rice dumplings on a stick, this emoji 🍡 Bean paste does have sugar in it, I’ve also seen vanilla added. Adzuki beans are the red beans used. I’m not the biggest fan of it except for in the red bean and white chocolate Kit Kats from Japan, those are really good.

Question: which screw cap pens have the fewest turns? I find the seal on snap caps can be insufficient, but I don’t wanna keep turning the screwcap for quick notes in a meeting - it distracts my co workers.

There are US retailers who sell the 70mL Namiki/Pilot bust-shape bottles standalone(I bought one two months ago, so it wasn't just a fake listing), so perhaps it would be a good idea to check with your distributor to see if something has changed since you last asked.

A short pen cast would likely make me cry. A ten hour long pen cast should be your prank. We won’t have to worry for some time yet about short pencasts…it’s only June. Only thing that happens in June is Pride. And final exams. As a chemistry guy, inks are my thing. I went from mixing acids to medication to ink. I also have the solution to your name problem: the Stationery Spotlight. Alliteration AND a suitable title. Speaking of which, have you ever done a paper comparison? As in, paper A is best for everyday work, paper B is best for cheap stocking, paper C is best for a gift, etc. I watched a BestPen video a few days ago and wondered if you’d be able to put in your input on the subject!

Brian, whatever you do, don't get rid of the Corelle stuff. Corning sold off the dishes/pots business. They're doing networking products now. The new stuff is garbage. I have Corning pots that are 50+ years old and they're in great shape. The new stuff breaks if you look at it the wwrong way.

Lava Rock for a pen material?? And Drew, I'm thinking about tumblers that have a thin wall in them for confetti or sand. Someone could totally make a fountain pen body like where the back twists off. She'd just be a bit chunky. Or you could have a short cartridge and put the material in the back part of the pen body.
