I think the most shocking part of filming this story is the fact that these coffin home dwellers are spending $200-400 USD per month for rent. It’s just a very sad situation for hundreds of thousands of local people in one of my favorite cities in the world 😌 The next time you go to Hong Kong and enjoy the 5-star amenities, don’t forget about these people!

Not to brag but my mortgage & insurance for 3B 1B in the US (Midwest) is around $600, locked in around 2017. It's shocking & sickening to me that some of these people pay almost 50-80% of the equivalant of my mortgage to RENT a coffin room. This is quickly becoming the reality for all large industrialized cities regardless of government. Hong Kong, Singapore, LA, NY. Tokyo. Many of these people could probably afford a better standard of living if they lived on mainland China somewhere but would there be jobs there for them?

I lived alone in a coffin home, also called cage home, for a short period of time when I was a young man struggling to survive in Hong Kong. The condition was brutal. It was literally a 4 feet by 7 feet cage with no window and no air-conditioning in the sweltering summer heat. But I never gave up hope. Now I'm living comfortably in a large apartment unit that I own in the USA. For people who are down on their luck but still have strong hope for a better life, I wish them well. @@Gw17bvp28f Actually, even when I was living in a cage home and struggling to survive, looking for a comfortable life was still not my primary goal in life. I was in revolt against the hypocrisy of the Christian religion that my parents forced me to follow and was searching desperately for people who share the love that I believed in. I found them in a rich family that let me live in their home temporarily with the referral of a college teacher who shared my love. My route out of poverty was not what I planned. I was a driving school instructor with meager income after I immigrated into the US. One day my car with a student inside was hit from behind by a reckless driver while we were stopping before a crosswalk with a pedestrian on it. Then the reckless driver just reversed and drove away. Fortunately, nobody was hurt but I was so frustrated that I quitted my job. It turned out that the accident was a blessing in disguise. Because after I quitted the job, I had lots of spare time to go on the internet. It was the knowledge that I acquired on the internet that enabled me to become the owner the property that I own now.

Also arrogant. The low class actually is more contempt toward others, especially mainland fellow Chinese. Their pride is based on looking down on others. Such hierarchy of humility/arrogance toward others is typical in tropical culture and social underclass, especially in southeast Asia. I would pay to follow her round & listen to her all day! With just a little bit of upfront funding/marketing support, she could purchase an electric scooter to ease the physical strain of navigating & guiding paying customers. Travelling is always easier/more fun & culturally richer when you know someone local. Might even make her enough to rent somewhere bigger, although she has made a really nice job of her tiny-living space! My mother is 90 & still works part-time out of choice, it keeps her mentally & physically active, so anything is possible. Her tours could be called: Go-Coco!

Don't get me wrong, but even if you're a millionaire, how can you make this better? It is heartbreaking to see people living like this but imagine someone having 50 000 000 dollars in liquid cash...what can they do? You can buy like 2 apartment complexes for that which can house like 100 people. There are hundreds of thousands of people living in such conditions just in Hong Kong...tens of millions in the world. Yes, a handful of people own half the world's wealth, but rich people in general themselves cannot make a difference. Not without government's help. Fyi, 50 000 000 dollars in net worth would put you among top 0.0001% earners and all you can do with those money is to house only 100-150 people at most. If you wanna know how much it costs to take care of someone poor look at the US. 150 BILLION dollars a YEAR to take care of 10 million migrants. No matter how heartbreaking it is, you will never be able to take care of everyone and so you better use the money you have to help your own people. That's why I want migrants out. That's why I want 150 billion to be used to house tens of thousands of Americans that need help. It may sound harsh but if you think about it rationally, it is the most logical thing you can do. And the Hong Kong government should do the same thing.

I just finished watching this video and this definitely earned my subscription. My parents came to the US from HK long ago and "auntie" Coco definitely reminds me of my parents' and grandparents' friends. I'm not related to Coco, nor do I know her, but in Chinese culture, calling her "auntie" is a form of respect. I honestly felt like volunteering to translate for you and auntie Coco since I speak Cantonese at the native level even though I'm born and raised in the USA. 😊

I live in Hong Kong and I will never not be amazed and humbled by the resilience of the people that have to endure this hardship, coco is a true icon and deserves so much more, as do all people living in these conditions. I pray that the housing system will improve so these types of home become obsolete. in my village they have just built many transitional housing units so it is a step forward, but needs to be more and faster!

You are a great example of what traveling truly is. You are not afraid to show the reality of it all. Hong Kong is not only glits and glam, there is human hardship behind all of it but also human resilience and joy despite the circumstances.

I feel so emotional after watching this... It's really sad how the living conditions for the poor folks can be.. And I'm still complaining in Singapore for not living in a condo, but just a HDB flat.. Now it looks like my house can be subdivided for 20 people to stay...😢🙏 Makes me feel very humbled and blessed. Hoping the best for Coco and the other friendly uncle there...

This was both sad and beautiful at the same time. When you go to different places, countries when you visit you live a totally different reality then what the majority of the people do. The spirit and joy that Coco has was so heartwarming and beautiful even though she didnt have much she still wanted to buy you something to drink and she still appreciated what she had. Thank you for this and Coco thank you for your beauty.

Drew, what you did here in making this video was beautiful..the meaning behind it, yes I agree, these people of Hong Kong who struggle and live in such ways deserve so much better. 😢 we here in the states take so much for granted, SO MUCH! Greetings… As a hk local, wanted to say thank you for visiting HK this crazy packed-up place of the world. Indeed this is one of the hard-to-deal-with lifestyle everyday for some people living here and carry on the struggling with high density living standard . All we hope our government will do something to input more decent facilities and provides the assist to the lower class especially the very lower income levels let them live in stable with respects. Thanks for sharing this topic to the world. Cheers

I saw another documentary, the housing crisis in HK is because the government don't release more land for housing, and even when they do, the do it by bidding for the developers causing the developers to put a hefty price to make a profit. HK government should check what Singapore do on public housing.

That was so nice of Coco to let you see her room and chat with you. I'm sure that was a highlight in her day too and the extra shopping hopefully made things a little easier for her. I love seeing other people's cultures. The real people in them. It's sad that they have such a tiny space to actually live in. I wonder if they have anyone helping them, giving them some place for company and sharing community?
