I think the most shocking part of filming this story is the fact that these coffin home dwellers are spending $200-400 USD per month for rent. It’s just a very sad situation for hundreds of thousands of local people in one of my favorite cities in the world 😌 The next time you go to Hong Kong and enjoy the 5-star amenities, don’t forget about these people!

Not to brag but my mortgage & insurance for 3B 1B in the US (Midwest) is around $600, locked in around 2017. It's shocking & sickening to me that some of these people pay almost 50-80% of the equivalant of my mortgage to RENT a coffin room. This is quickly becoming the reality for all large industrialized cities regardless of government. Hong Kong, Singapore, LA, NY. Tokyo. Many of these people could probably afford a better standard of living if they lived on mainland China somewhere but would there be jobs there for them?

The man sleeping without a mattress brought me to tears...When I moved to the flat I'm in right now, 4 years ago, I didn't have any money left after paying the down payment so I had to sleep on the floor for the first 2 weeks. I would use my winter jacket to soften the floor. I will never forget how miserable it felt and it was just for 2 weeks. This guys has been living like this for years. It's horrible. No one deserves to live in conditions like these.

I lived alone in a coffin home, also called cage home, for a short period of time when I was a young man struggling to survive in Hong Kong. The condition was brutal. It was literally a 4 feet by 7 feet cage with no window and no air-conditioning in the sweltering summer heat. But I never gave up hope. Now I'm living comfortably in a large apartment unit that I own in the USA. For people who are down on their luck but still have strong hope for a better life, I wish them well. Let love be their guiding light in the dark chapter of their lives.

@@Gw17bvp28f Actually, even when I was living in a cage home and struggling to survive, looking for a comfortable life was still not my primary goal in life. I was in revolt against the hypocrisy of the Christian religion that my parents forced me to follow and was searching desperately for people who share the love that I believed in. I found them in a rich family that let me live in their home temporarily with the referral of a college teacher who shared my love. My route out of poverty was not what I planned. I was a driving school instructor with meager income after I immigrated into the US. One day my car with a student inside was hit from behind by a reckless driver while we were stopping before a crosswalk with a pedestrian on it. Then the reckless driver just reversed and drove away. Fortunately, nobody was hurt but I was so frustrated that I quitted my job. It turned out that the accident was a blessing in disguise. Because after I quitted the job, I had lots of spare time to go on the internet. It was the knowledge that I acquired on the internet that enabled me to become the owner the property that I own now.

Also arrogant. The low class actually is more contempt toward others, especially mainland fellow Chinese. Their pride is based on looking down on others. Such hierarchy of humility/arrogance toward others is typical in tropical culture and social underclass, especially in southeast Asia. Northern cultures of cold climate tend to egalitarian and individualistic without such hierarchy, typical Mongols, northern europeans and other arctic people. Somehow upper class people in most society tend to behave more like northerners with individualism.

Coco's English, like some the other residents, is very good! She could become a tour-guide (working as few/many hours as she wished) & charge international travellers for her local knowledge. I would pay to follow her round & listen to her all day! With just a little bit of upfront funding/marketing support, she could purchase an electric scooter to ease the physical strain of navigating & guiding paying customers. Travelling is always easier/more fun & culturally richer when you know someone local. Might even make her enough to rent somewhere bigger, although she has made a really nice job of her tiny-living space! My mother is 90 & still works part-time out of choice, it keeps her mentally & physically active, so anything is possible. Her tours could be called: Go-Coco!

Don't get me wrong, but even if you're a millionaire, how can you make this better? It is heartbreaking to see people living like this but imagine someone having 50 000 000 dollars in liquid cash...what can they do? You can buy like 2 apartment complexes for that which can house like 100 people. There are hundreds of thousands of people living in such conditions just in Hong Kong...tens of millions in the world. Yes, a handful of people own half the world's wealth, but rich people in general themselves cannot make a difference. Not without government's help. Fyi, 50 000 000 dollars in net worth would put you among top 0.0001% earners and all you can do with those money is to house only 100-150 people at most. If you wanna know how much it costs to take care of someone poor look at the US. 150 BILLION dollars a YEAR to take care of 10 million migrants. No matter how heartbreaking it is, you will never be able to take care of everyone and so you better use the money you have to help your own people. That's why I want migrants out. That's why I want 150 billion to be used to house tens of thousands of Americans that need help. It may sound harsh but if you think about it rationally, it is the most logical thing you can do. And the Hong Kong government should do the same thing.

Drew, thank you so much for showing this side of my hometown to the world. I really appreciate how respectful you were. Every time I watch videos like this, I feel blessed to have lived a comfortable life here, but am always reminded of how I could become homeless in an instant if an accident happens. Just a reminder, when handing out red packets or gifts, it is considered rude to use only one hand, so use two hands next time. You do get a “pass” as a foreigner, but this small change will definitely be appreciated.

Poor means you’re down to basics, no worries about what to wear, bills of all sorts, managing all your “stuff.” You aren’t a slave to its maintenance, upkeep, and security. So long as you have food and some sort of shelter from the weather, it leaves freedom to expend on others, to get to know them.

@@mariekatherine5238thats not what poor means. Poor means you cab barely afford the 'basics' you mention. There's no so called 'freedom' when you have worries about expensive rent, no free movement to speak to people and get to know them due to your confined space, survival mode is not freedom, it's complete scarcity in all areas of possible abundance. A simple life cpuld call for the ease you describe, but not being poor. I don't think her life is 'simple' though either, having to deal with what she does on a daily basis. We only get a snippet of her life...what about dental, doctor, transportation to see family and friends, opportunities? She's sadly very poor and it's not the way humans are supposed to exist.

Better to live in this small space than to be homeless like you see in the West. Homelessness is the worst disaster in an individual not to talk of a family. How can you function when you don’t have a place to rest or sleep in peace?

My parents came to the US from HK long ago and "auntie" Coco definitely reminds me of my parents' and grandparents' friends.
