While I was in Tokyo a few months ago, I met a 21-year-old girl named Karin who currently lives inside an internet cafe in Tokyo. Her room is 3 feet (1 meter) wide by 6 feet (2 meters) long, and she doesn't even have enough space to sleep horizontally. Believe it or not, more than 5,400 others in Tokyo are living in internet cafes because it's a much cheaper alternative than paying rent for an apartment in this expensive city.
Karin's situation is a sad one -- she was kicked out of her house a year ago, and physically abused by her father before becoming homeless on the streets. With little money in her bank account, she found a safe place to live at this internet cafe, and now she makes $1,300 a month by working at a hostess bar.
But she's still struggling to get by.
This story highlights the extreme pressure of Japanese society, as well as the social isolation that comes along with it. I'd love to hear your thoughts about Karin's situation, and the overall oddities of Japanese culture in the comments down below.

This concept of living in Internet cafes in Japan has intrigued me for the last 10 years - and I’m glad to finally have told this story. What do you think about Japan’s cut-throat society? And extreme social isolation? Do you think it’s a good or bad thing? Would love to hear from you in the comments here so we can discuss some of these issues 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵

@@littlewigglemonster7691 I'm guessing you can't pay a daily rate tho, and would need a large sum every week/month/year to pay the rent, vs the daily payments one can make in places like these. We have a similar situation with residential hotels in the US. It's more expensive, but you can pay smaller increments, which ends up costing more in the end, but all one can do when their income isn't stable

I mean she lied through her teeth the whole time and it hurt to watch. The story about the taxi.. wow, go look at a tokyo subway map and train map, Shinjuku where she works is like 300 yen away from places where 10% of properties are vacant. In general, Japan is very very affordable and in that apartment i mentioned, i had a room mate and spent a total of 100,000 yen per month all in for insurance, rent, cell phone, internet, going out to eat 10 times a week, and dont forget drinking ahrd twice a week. I thought the video was about someone attempting a challenge, but as soon as I realized this was someone living there out of necessity, this took a really sad turn for me. These locations are really terrible not because they are small, but because they allow the marginalized to be forgotten in a vicious circle of poverty. It is just enough to help you get by but expensive enough to make it difficult to save up enough money to get ahead. This is indicative of a society where people have been forgotten and the availability of a societal safety net is gone. She is essentially a homeless youth fleeing abuse. She is literally one paycheck/downturn from making some very poor choices in a her life. I pray for her safety and that she makes it out of this situation okay.

Well, I live in Tokyo, but I think she could easily get out of this life. To begin with, $46 a night is not cheap at all. And if she lives there for 30 days, it will cost her over 200,000 yen a month, which is obviously more than the average Tokyo rent. There are plenty of apartments and share houses in central Tokyo for less than $500 a month. I don't know why she still lives in an Internet cafe over one of those places, but I'm sure she can move out immediately.

I stayed in a capsule hotel in Akasaka for 2500 yen/night. I think I got a discount on top of that because I was staying monthly. But it was really brutal on my wellbeing. The worst part is you have no private space, or even what private space you have you can still hear things. A lot of nightlife workers lived there, and I would often go to McDonald's or similar until they closed to eat and have a desk/chair to sit on and watch videos or do work. Tokyo is a brutal city to be alone, and culturally most Japanese people don't make friends with strangers easily or quickly, so those that I met were either on the fringes or immigrants.

$46 a day? I highly doubt that. I live 25 minutes from Kabukicho by train and I live in a 57 sqm aparthment with two big bedrooms, livingroom and decent kitchen for 137,000 Yen a month. If she is paying $46 USD a day, that would mean she is paying about 220,345 Yen per month for that small internet cafe. She can sleep at a capsule hotel for cheaper. She can sleep in a guest house in Shinjuku for like 80,000 yen per month and have a lot bigger place, a better life, and a lot more money. How can she even afford that as she said she makes 200,000 Yen per month working at a hostess club. The math does not add up. They have 11 sqm apartments in Tokyo with no guarantor or landlord fees for 35,000 yen per month. I just watched a video on it yesterday. So she is wasting her money. I have lived here for 7 years, I know the prices here.

@@MadAudi Yo cannot live in deficit here. Internet cafe's want cash daily. So if she is paying 7,000 Yen per day x 30 days = 280,000 Yen. It is not possible on a 200,000 Yen a month salary. The banks will not loan someone money that has no fixed address. The government will not give any financial support without a fixed address. In fact, they wont even give her a bank account if she does not already have one. Cell phone companies will not give her a phone contract without a fixed address either. I been living here for 7 years and I know Japan very well. In fact, she cannot get any help from the Shinjuku ward office as she has no fixed address and does not pay her monthly ward tax. Without a proper fixed address in Japan, you cannot do anything. She most likely would get paid in cash per month as that is 100% legal here if you request it from your employer. So based on what I know, and basic math, this story is BS and only here to get views to make money from the view counts. There is no way she lives in an internet cafe based on basic math.

There are a few important points that aren't highlighted enough in your video: - She’s not Japanese, which probably creates additional challenges for her. - She has suffered from family violence, yet it seems like no one cares. Are there any support or protection programs in Japan for such cases? If this issue is ignored, it’s likely affecting more than just 5400 people. I have to dislike your video because it feels like a bit of a stretch overall. Here are some reasons why: - It's not true that you need to pay $80 to eat at a restaurant in Tokyo, not all restaurants are that expensive. - It's uncommon to need a 40-minute taxi ride in Tokyo, especially with the widespread availability of public transportation. Who actually does that in Japan, apart from foreign KZbinrs visiting for a few days? - Your only housing option isn't a hotel or something in the city center. Just because you work in the city center doesn’t mean you can’t commute. Renting in Tokyo can be significantly cheaper. For example, you could rent an apartment (with your own toiled and shower!) in Nakano for $400-600 per month, which is just a 20-minute ride to Shinjuku. - The minimum wage in Tokyo is higher than in many other parts of Japan by law, so it's not $700 and it's measured in $/hour, not $/month. Additionally, many people earn more than the minimum wage. - I watch other channels about Japan, and they show plenty of social interaction, I think "extreme social isolation" is an exaggeration.

I do understand your point about the possible misrepresentation of some of the facts about cost of living in Tokyo and what not but it is true that Japan has a huge problem with many people living in Internet cafes and the like. The country claims to have a supposedly low homeless population but the reason for that is that while homeless, people who live in cafes and such have shelter and as such are considered as truly homeless. Additionally, Japan has a tendency of shutting down homeless encampments and forcing them into the countryside and outside of the city thereby giving the appearance of a lower homeless population in comparison to other big cities. These facts are damning enough on their own and I think this story would have been better served without the exaggeration/misrepresentation over cost of living in Tokyo vs. living wage. All of this doesn’t even get into the topic of Japan’s ongoing struggle with homelessness in teens due to bad home life and poor support systems for them. As well as the steadily increasing number of homeless elderly people due to the rapidly aging population. As an outsider looking in (specifically as an American) the homeless crisis in Japan seems far different from how it is in other countries. Even in anime I’ve noticed that being homeless in Japan always seems like more of a job than it is in other countries as there always appears to be very little support options available for them. Instead the only way a character is ever depicted as escaping their homeless situation is if they have family who either decides to take them back or take them in. I’ve never seen any depictions of shelters or even resources offering aids for those in crisis. Instead the most help offered always appears to be in the form of soup kitchens held in public parks. Meanwhile the government officials spend all their time and resources shutting down encampments and people away from the makeshift communities they establish for themselves. I understand that this is fiction however I’ve found this portrayal of homeless life in japan to be consistent among every program I’ve seen where the topic is brought up leading me to believe that this stuff is considered common knowledge in Japan.

@@Ama0890 no it's not possible misrepresentation of some facts. it's total and utter lies and misrepresentation of pretty much every "fact" and information in the entire video. Homelessness in Tokyo and Japan is childsplay compared to any major city in the US. Having a job and living in a manga cafe or internet cafe is NOT homeless and many people that do it prefer it. There are homeless on the streets here in Tokyo but so few compared to any major North American city and they're even allowed to sleep inside the train stations at night. Soup kitchens in public parks, governmetn shutting down encampments? You're talking about your own country. Tokyo has all sorts goverment support programs as well as NPO's should people c hoose to use them. Most of the few homeless that do exist prefer to actually be homeless. Stop drinking the coolaid.

Ok let me say this as a Japanese person living in Tokyo, this girl is living this way by choice. Society is not forcing her to live this way. If she has trouble working from say mental issues she can apply for public assistance. There are numerous unskilled jobs that pay over 1500yen an hour in Tokyo. After taxes that's north of 190,000yen. She can find higher paying jobs if she worked night shifts. For housing, there are apartments for 60,000yen in the middle of Tokyo. Maybe she's too tired or it's too daunting for her to deal with searching for a job/apartment or she just wants to get paid while drinking and that's fine but that lifestyle is by choice.

Maybe because she ran away, she doesn't have the proper documents and identification to apply for public assistance. Those things require really troublesome paperwork in many countries including Japan. Plus if you have mental health problems, you might have to prove it with a diagnosis from a doctor, which is even more paperwork and obstacles. I agree that there are apartments that cost much cheaper, but again, most landlords might require documents and a few months of deposit/down payment. In Japan the deposit/down payment can be more than 1 additional month of rent because some landlords charge "key money". And some landlords might refuse to have a tenant who works in a hostess bar because the culture still view red light district work as "shameful". The only thing I'm wondering about is why she doesn't go to a cheaper internet cafe. I'm just confused because it's really easy to find cafes in Shinjuku that charge much less than that for a 12-hour stay (I've quickly found one through a Google search). Or maybe she doesn't feel safe elsewhere?

@@user-qm7jw Yeah I am a foreigner living in Shinjuku in my own apartment and I pay much less than she's paying at the internet cafe. Apartments are ridiculously cheap here compared to any other developed country. It's misleading to present Tokyo as a super expensive city when it's not. The prices listed here are way off too. The $230 taxi ride would less than $5 on the train. You can get a hotel room like that for well under $100, not $190. That restaurant that supposedly costs $83 for a meal is Kura Sushi and only costs $0.70 per plate. You could eat over 100 plates of sushi for $83. Current minimum wage in Tokyo is $7.06 per hour which is over $1200 if working full time, not $700.

@@amanofculture2261 Tokyo is not expensive if you compare it with a lot of countries, that thing that you are missing is that these people are not travellers, they probably never left Japan, these people are people working minimum wage and barely surviving, you can't compare the cost of living of a local to that of a tourist. Go to Vietnam and say it's cheap! Yes, it's crazy cheap! But the a big part of the population make around 300$ per month. You don't have the right perspective because you are just visiting. Hey Drew, I don't know if you will read this but does she know about the concept of sharehouses? If not please inform her! $46 for that tiny room is ridiculous. Last year I was living in a sharehouse in Asakusa for about $25 a night and it got me my own bed in a room with a windows and a small desk, as well as access to a kitchen. There were a lot of Japanese living there as well. I think many other sharehouses around Tokyo fall within the same price range. The one I stayed at was called "Nomad Sharehouse" and they always had available rooms. It was really pains me seeing the way she lives when for half the price she could stay in a much much nicer place!!!

Let’s not exaggerate here. Tokyo is not nearly as expensive as living in LA. Japan also has a very robust train system so having to take a taxi is more of a luxury unless it’s after midnight. But it is also safe to walk at night in Japan. She works at a hostess club by choice and chooses to live in an Internet cafe. She is the one who ran away. She had a chance to get a good education but threw it away. She still dresses well and it is so cheap to eat out in Japan. Just like any other city, go to a fancy restaurant, and you will pay the high price. I would like a to live in a nice apartment in Newport Beach Ca. but guess what? It’s too expensive. All my friends in Japan are doing well. Videos like this are nothing but exaggerations. Of course times are tough but that is not only Japan. Ask anyone in the United States and they will say the same. Dont believe everything you see. If you hang out in the pubs and bars, you can easily meet people.

@Craigtcs Great comment! It’s too bad most will scroll away after the first 4 or 5 words. These days, far too many people immediately stop accepting new information the instant they detect an opposing opinion. These people are prime targets for trolls/bots from consumer marketing to political propaganda. Many will knowingly and/or unknowingly help entities with very bad intentions by taking bits and pieces of information from real social problems, manipulating then multiplying these “hot button” issues. Many seem to thrive on repeating crazy talking points, conspiracy theories, and other crazy messaging that only reenforces their existing perceptions and opinions its really quite concerning how far people go to protect themselves from being wrong on social media.

That opening is extreme. Tokyo is quite affordable to live in compared to other major cities around the world. You can easily find a decent 1 room place outside of central Tokyo for around 500 us dollars a month, the price of food at supermarkets is fair and you can take the trains everywhere for like 3 dollars, so there is no need to be using taxis. Of course, if you want to burn loads of money on expensive restaurants, using taxis, and such, those options are available to.

I have a friend who lives in Tokyo and he says he pays only $750/month for an apartment and there are lots of apartments under $1000/month. The more expensive areas of Tokyo are Minato City which includes Roppongi Hills, Azabu and Asakasa. Chiyoda City (stayed in Chiyoda the times I've gone to Japan, loved it) and Shibuya City which includes Shibuya (there's extensive neighborhoods away from the skyscrapers), Ebisu and Harajuku. Shinjuku generally isn't overly expensive. The cost of living in Japan compared to say the US is WAY lower (the beginning of the video is VERY misleading) and people are able to live comfortably for the cost that here in the US many would consider is struggling for a single person (i.e. $30k/year)

It honestly isn’t that bad if the price is right and you have good housemates. It really depends on the type of person in these places, some find it confided and a prison, some find it a place to sleep as they are out a lot and it can save money. For me, I didnt mind, it was a temporary as I moved towards others goals when I stayed in them.
