Just out of curiosity, have you ever heard of Mennonites before watching this video? I really enjoyed telling this story and this year, I plan to share more stories about the lesser known communities in the USA 🇺🇸
@Flamableninja11 ай бұрын
In a family guy episode, yes. When their car breaks down and they end up in an Amish community and Peter makes a joke saying something like "By Mennonites", but I always thought Mennonites and Amish were the same.
@TexasHomesteaders11 ай бұрын
Yep. There are some that live here. You see them in the stores. They shop at Walmart too. Tommy is from Ohio and used to the Amish so he was surprised to see the Mennonites out at the stores and restaurants here but we are used to it. I grew up Southern Baptist (my Dad was a Preacher) and we weren't allowed to wear pants or listen to secular music (think Duggars). When we flooded during hurricane Harvey, the Red Cross or FEMA were nowhere to be seen but the Mennonites showed up with plates of food and helped people clean up their flooded homes. Good people.

Church feels good cause you are around people. Being around a group of people who care about you is the greatest boost to your mental health you can ever get. I personally am not a believer but I love church as an adult. Hated as a kid, But now that I have less friends and people to hang out with its a nice get away from the loneliness of life as an adult. BTW I don't lie to them, I let them know I'm not of faith or have any beliefs of god. But they don't mind mostly, there are a few who wont talk to me cause they think I'm a bad person for not "converting" to there faith and that's OK. I still show up and enjoy being around people and hearing there tales from the bible and so on. I wish I could believe, but every time I try I can't bring myself to TRULY have faith in a god even tho I wish I could.

Yes their food must be really Good, Not that I have tasted it Yet but I have done research on the Amish and Mennonite and the beautiful woman and I have learned that these virtues woman cook everything from scratch and they grow their own food. I really admire them because they seem to Live by the Blue Book, The Bible and I too have their same Beliefs but as a difference to them God has put me in the world as salt to the nations and i often realize how short i Fall😢 which i hate because yes like that man said "bad company corrupts good morals" you can find this verse in the bible, 1 Corinthians 15:33 KJV, and what does this mean? I will give you an example, I have a Neighbor but this neighbor sometimes likes to cuss and to her it's normal but me knowing that God hates Profanity I don't say those words mostly but sometimes when I get mad at my children because they are disobeying me I tend to spit out an profane word but soon as I realize I've been corrupted because I've been keeping company with my neighbor and so I become influenced by her but as soon as I realize I speak to God at that moment and I apologize to Him and I know He Forgives me and I try Not to speak and Idle word again. Being a Christian is Not only Believing what Christ done but it is also Living the life He calls us to do in other words we read the Bible and we Live by His words, that's why Jesus says in James 1:-22-25, KJV, But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face on a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. Just thought I'd share some Valuable information.

I’m Canadian and spent most of my childhood growing up in farm country. A few blocks from where I lived was a Mennonite family, and they would babysit me and my sisters when we had days off of school and our parents were busy. I remember being fascinated by the inside of their house because it really looked like something out of the 1800s. I also liked seeing the animals that they had on their farm. This family had 8 children and I can remember them teaching me and my sister how to play marbles and an old school game called jacks. When my mother had a stroke, they were the first people who came to help out and helped take care of me and my sisters. They also used to bring us fresh pies and other baked goods during the holidays. I moved to a more urban area over 3 hours away when I was 12, but I still go back to visit the area when I can because I still have some family and close friends who live there. Unfortunately, the last time I saw this Mennonite family was in 2015, and I have no idea what happened to them or where they went. I still think about them sometimes though and hope they’re doing well. They were some of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

It's intriguing to me, as a Dutch just like Menno Simons used to be, that these stems of religion dating back to the 16th century are still in place today, with no following back in the homeland. I notice a lot of shared values of how my father used to grow up back in the 60's in rural Eastern Netherlands: large families, being self-sufficient, belief, hard working, making the best of the land and a sense of down-to-earthness and being welcome. It seems like these communities across the world preserved, in a way, what farmer life in the Netherlands used to be like back in the day.
