Yeah, you'll notice that Portuguese Africa didn't have different flags because it was all Portugal to them. As such, higher budgets were spent on developing Countries like Angola and Mozambique than in the actual mainland. It is true. It was due to the fomentation plans that we started in the early 50's. By the time of the 25th of April, we had literally spent almost half of our entire DGP (about 42%, if I'm not mistaken) in the development of the regions we had in Africa. After all, places like Angola and Mozambique would register higher and higher development indexes year after year for a reason. And that's why that, if you look up documentaries about how life was in mainland Portugal before 74', many people here lived in more difficult conditions: ironically enough, it was better to live in the colonies than in the metropolis itself.

About italian folklore, here there a story about a festival celebrated only in Florence (others Italian cities have different festivals and folklore): Easter is celebrate in various way in different countries and cities. For exemple, in Florence (in Italy) “Scoppio del carro” took place on Easter Day. You can see this celebration in first and second photo. The Scoppio del Carro ("Explosion of the Cart") is a folk tradition of Florence. On Easter Sunday, a cart, packed full of fireworks and other pyrotechnics, is lit and provides a historic spectacle in the civic life of the city. On the morning of Easter Sunday, the antique cart (in use for over 500 years), moves from the Porta al Prato to the Piazza del Duomo. Hauled by a team of white oxen festooned with garlands of the first flowers and herbs of spring, the cart is escorted by 150 soldiers, musicians, and people in 15th century dress. Meanwhile, a fire is struck using the historic flints from Jerusalem at Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli. It is then carried in procession to the cathedral square by members of the Pazzi family, clerics, and city officials. The cart is loaded with fireworks while a wire, stretching to the high altar inside the cathedral, is fitted with a mechanical dove (the "colombina"). Shortly thereafter, at the singing of the Gloria in excelsis Deo during Easter Mass, the cardinal of Florence lights a fuse in the colombina with the Easter fire. It then speeds through the church to ignite the cart outside. During all of these stages, the bells of Giotto's campanile ring out. The complex fireworks show that follows lasts about 20 minutes. A successful display from the "Explosion of the Cart" is supposed to guarantee a good harvest, stable civic life, and good business. The event of the "Scoppio del Carro" has its origins in the First Crusade, when Europeans laid siege to the city of Jerusalem in a conflict to claim Palestine for Christianity. In 1097, Pazzino de' Pazzi, a Florentine from a prominent family, was by tradition the first man to scale the walls of Jerusalem. As a reward for this act of bravery, his commander gave him three flints from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which were then carried back to Tuscany. These are kept in the Church of Santi Apostoli. It became the practice for a "holy fire" to be struck from these flints at Eastertide, which was then carried throughout the city by groups of young men bearing torches. In time, this tradition evolved to something similar to what is seen today; a cart bearing a large candle was rolled through the city to the cathedral, from where the holy fire would be distributed. By the end of the 15th century, the Scoppio del Carro assumed its present form.

A bit of folklore from my city (Bergamo): - On December 13 we celebrate saint lucia. this saint was blind, and as santa claus she brings gifts in exchange for milk and biscuits for her donkey. however, children are told to be careful, because if you look at her face by mistake, you go blind. in many areas it is celebrated with ceremonies and processions. - Each grandmother tells her grandchildren a nursery rhyme about a goat, without bones or skin, which would come and kill them if they weren't good. - We have a lot of masks and puppets that are inspired by the medieval and renaissance tradition. The most famous is the harlequin (from which harley queen took inspiration), but the most iconic is the Gioppino. saying "you are a Gioppino" is an insult and is equivalent to saying "you are a clown". - Every mountain, lake or palace has its own legends. some have ancient roots and involve goblins and mythological characters, while others have Christian roots and involve the devil or demonic forces. Now, since Bergamo is a small city and every Italian city has its own legends, I'd say that meme is quite inaccurate.

Some legends and creatures of the region in Italy where I live, Campania region (Campania region has as capital a city called Naples): 1) Partenope siren Usually the word "Partenopeo" is used in Italian to identify things or people from Naples (also the word "Napoletano" is used and both words are translated in English as "Neapolitan"). The term derives from the name of a siren named Partenope, who was buried where the current Campania's capital stands (indicatively). According to legend, Partenope was beautiful enough to compete with Venus (the goddess of beauty) herself. Like her fellow men, she was a charmer, and she attracted sailors with her song and then led them to death. Finally came Ulysses (maybe you know him because of "Odyssey"), a smart navigator, who had himself chained to the main mast of his ship so as not to give in to the creature's enticements. Partenope, having failed the mission, fell in love of him, to the point of committing suicide. Her body was transported by sea currents to the shores of the Italian peninsula, where the city of Partenope was founded. Further on, the inhabited center was destroyed by the Cumans and Neapolis (that literally means "new city" in their ancient language) was built in its place. The name then became Naples. 2) 'a bella m'briana Also in Naples, among the home walls of the house there is the Bella M’Briana. In the collective imagination she is defined as the spirit of the home, a benign presence that comes to the aid of the family in times of real need. Often she manifests herself as a beautiful woman dressed in white, ready to help the family only in case the house is clean and tidy. This is the only condition that allows this presence to house within the home walls. Order and respect are those cultural cornerstones that once (even if today some legacy remains) defined the people of Southern Italy. This domestic spirit can transform herself into a gecko and present herself to people in this form. M'Briana can also turn into a beautiful butterfly or a moth. So be careful when you find a small gecko on the ceiling or on a wall of your home, or if you see a butterfly fluttering: the Bella M’Briana could be there to understand if peace really reigns in your home. 3) the Papera Cugliuta (papera means duck) We are in front of a mythological beast with grotesque features. Its description reveals all the irony of the people of Campania region. Dont discount US folklore, we have our fair share as well. Between the natives culture, imported culture, and stories born in the usa, we have a pretty wide array. Weve got giants, wendigo, jersey devils (and a lot of devils actually, very strong christian faith after all and warnings not to go astray) tommy knockers, fey and fairies, river demons, a monster so ugly it can only weep at its misfortune and try to drown itself, and a horde of the damned that ride through the sky on flaming horses, chasing the devils red herd of cattle, unable to stop or sleep until they catch the herd. Just to name a few of the ones that came from within the country.
