I don't think many people realize how important the Battle of Midway was for turning the tide in favor of the USA but more importantly, how incredibly lucky they were. Three of the Japanese carriers were sunk with almost all of their planes on board because they were resupplying by a bunch of American dive bombers who just...got completely lost. No really, they flew past the Japanese fleet by mistake and just couldn't find them. So they turned around to try to fly back to their carriers and just stumbled upon the Japanese carriers which were pretty much completely undefended since the American bombers were coming at them from the rear.

@user-pf8rb6ze7i Without the defeat at Midway, the USA quite simply wouldn't have been able to even get close enough to Japan to drop the bomb in the first place. They'd have probably ended up nuking Iwo Jima instead or even Midway since it most definitely would have fallen to the Japanese without that victory. Because the Japanese fighters completely routed the American fighters in that battle, if the dive bombers hadn't gotten lost, they'd have been shot down with the rest. Almost all of the 250 planes lost by Japan in that battle just sank with the ships while the 150 American fighters were shot down by Japanese planes. I cannot stress how much sinking those three carriers completely turned the tide of that battle, without it, the Japanese were taking Midway. And the USA probably would not have been able to retake it before Germany's capitulation when the US would have been able to send the Atlantic fleet to the Pacific. Who ruled the sky was almost all that mattered in WW2 naval warfare and before Midway, that was the Japanese. Mind you it's true that Japan was always gonna lose eventually but without Midway, they'd have lost pretty much exclusively to the Soviets and that would have created a very different peace deal. They might even still be a communist puppet like North Korea to this day.

@user-pf8rb6ze7i While it’s true that Japan would still lose, without midway going as it did, and especially if Japan could save some of the carriers, the pacific war would’ve dragged on significantly longer. Until the point where America could produce overwhelming numbers, Japan likely would be able to hold on. Even in our timeline, looking at the island war, America had to fight for every inch of land despite having significant air and navy dominance. Carriers were being used as floating airbases to strike deeper into islands. If Japan still had a partially functioning navy with some carriers, they would make island hopping even more of a nightmare than it was in our timeline. It would be very likely Iwo Jima gets nuked instead like the commenter above, as America would not have the naval dominance by 1945 to get in range of the home islands

Battle of Midway ended up with such decisive victory thanks to a lot of luck (Japanese scouts not detecting some US carriers by some thin margin, waves of US, sometimes lost earlier, planes coming to attack Japanese carriers at right intervals to make it hard for them to restock fighters properly and/or send bombers in time for example). There is very good 3-part video from Montemayor about it, from both sides perspective (showing also fog of war and motives behind some decisions), and I fully recommend watching it.

Just an FYI regarding Midway. Most of the IJN battleships and most of the other IJN ships did not take part in the battle at all. From Wikipedia: "1st Carrier Striking Force: 4 fleet carriers 2 battleships 2 heavy cruisers 1 light cruiser 12 destroyers 248 carrier-based aircraft[2] 16 floatplanes 13 submarines" Another small group also took some part in the battle, again from Wikipedia: "Midway Support Force: 4 heavy cruisers 2 destroyers 12 floatplanes" The following IJN ships did not take part in the battle, again from Wikipedia: "Did not participate in battle: 2 light carriers 5 battleships 4 heavy cruisers 2 light cruisers ~35 support ships" Midway was still an absolutely massive win for the US, and they DID beat a larger force that was more experienced, but it wasn't quite as unbalanced as that info-graphic makes it out to be. For the sake of completion, here is a list of US assets, again from Wikipedia: "3 fleet carriers 7 heavy cruisers 1 light cruiser 15 destroyers 233 carrier-based aircraft 127 land-based aircraft 16 submarines[1] 9 PT boats" (And... As you can see... The US actually had more planes. Maybe not so one sided anyway.. Meh.. Still a damn good win)
