Maine was part of Massachusetts until it was split off to balance free and slave states. West Virginia left Virginia due to secession, as you mentioned. Vermont actually wasn't one of the 13 colonies. It declared its independence from New York, New Hampshire, and Quebec and was an independent country for a time.
