In France we are naturally taught French, but it's also an obligation to learn English. Also, around our 10-11th birthday we have to chose between Spanish or German. All these languages are taught in the basic public school, so we at least(and technically)(almost all French people) know 2 or 3 languages. But if your parents decides to put you in an "école régionale"(which translate to "county school") you can learn the traditional language of your county(which my parents did for me)+the school program of the public school). So, as far as i know, just during your 16 first years of life, in France you can learn up to 4 or 5 languages untill your 18th birthday(because school starts when you're around 2 or 3 years old). But don't mistake me, many of these are simply forgotten once you start to work. My parents(and i'm 19 years old) only know pieces of what they once learned in school, because we simply can't speak it everyday. It's kinda sad but also normal and predictable, it would be scary if we spoke more English than French in France. So, basically, we know few of the many languages we're taught(personnaly, over the 5 languages I had to study in the scholar system, I strongly "manipulate" only three of them: French, English and Breton(the traditionnal language of my county)).

Well exactly that's how it works in India as well! Over my entire school life and social life, I used to speak 6 languages at some point, well now I know only 4. Except like county schools, we have state board schools. In state board schools, we learn our native language (varies in every state) as first language, hindi and english as 2nd and 3rd language till 10th grade. And in 11th and 12th grades, we can either choose a foreign language ( mostly French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Arabic; French and German are popular) or a classical language from India ( like sanskrit and others) along with English.

The part of France that is sometimes confused for Britain, yet still has actual ties to Britain, being settled by some Longship riding Swedish people turned French, with the french Normans later invading England and turning the British french. Fortunately, France is a generous overlord and chooses not to interfere in worldly affairs, having already made up every country in existence, being responsible for every empire under the sun.
