a fun but often overlooked fact about china is that being a similarly big country, china has similar number of dialects often incomprehensible to each others (a previous meme reviewed by drew being the chinese language pretends its sub-languages are dialects) but since the chinese script is iconogram based, which means that the meaning of the word stays the same between different "dialects", people speaking different "dialects" could still understand each others through a common script, so china could pull these various "dialects" together into a common chinese language i could see india may have tried the same with standardizing the hindi script as the common script amongs its various local language, but since the hindi script is phonogram based, each word in the hindi script is still fundamentally different in different languages (same as how english, spanish, turkish, vietnamese, polish, tagalog & hungarian are incomprehensible amongst each others despite all of them use the same latin script)
