Dry Fly Perfection in Wyoming - Fly Fishing Wyoming (pt 3 day 3)

In part 3 day 3 of the Fly Fishing Wyoming series and it's my final day here on this super cool stream. I started by hiking further in and exploring more new areas. While walking, I look down over a small cliff and notice several wild rainbow trout rising in the most incredible pool. After catching a few, I continue into this wild, remote place. There was another awesome hole that looked perfect for nymphing so I switched up and pulled a few more bows, and one or two browns but quickly switched back to foam as I got into some heavier flows. I'll never forget this special stream. Cool to know places like this still exist! See more from this series below...

That pool on day 3 gave it away for me as I remember a great day in that exact spot when they were all over the green drake hatch. I loved fishing this area 10-20 years ago and good to see its still healthy. I am stuck in Indonesia with this virus situation and can't get my Rocky Mountain fishing in so Im watching all your videos. Great stuff. That Southern Colorado meadow you posted after Conejos really has me wondering and I'll be studying the area again. It also reminded me of some spots down there I need to revisit. Thanks for the inspiration and keep the videos coming. Its feeding my addition and inspiring me while Im away

I live in Wyoming I don't fly fish anymore I got hurt and can stand about a minute before my neck and back flairs up. But before I got hurt I used a wait forward sinking line with a streamer at the top of the hole. Platte River or Black Woollybuger fly cactus you can't go wrong. If thier is a big one you will get a bite. Good luck catch a big one.

Hey Drew! Another phenomenal video and footage of your adventures! Although I know you are a 'catch and release' guy, (which I totally respect and agree with), but, after all of your time, effort, energy, and money invested in your fishing adventures, don't you want to at least enjoy the fruits of your labor, and cook and eat one of your catches? Trout is one of my favorites, and I think you 'owe' yourself that reward. I don't judge, and never will, to each his own. I think you deserve a better meal than the 'bagged food' you eat. Thank you. I agree, I do need a better meal than bagged food lol! I have in the past and it was great so I get it...and have nothing against those that keep their catch. I definitely agree that I'm in no position to judge what a person does with the money and time they have earned. As long as it's legal and it makes you happy...go for it! I honestly, really just don't want to deal with it. It probably doesn't seem like a lot of work to most but to me...a bag and some boiling water and I'm done for the day. Cooking anything is work to me....prep, clean up, etc. Super lazy when I get on these trips lol!

@@LooknFishy yea I see another haha. It's nice to see places like that and anoher on your video. For you, many fish in one place is a standard, but in Poland it is different. The mentality of the so-called communism who take the fish has made it difficult to catch something big. It does not help either, these people occupy the highest positions in the Polish Fishing Association. It has been changing a bit for the last few years, because young people who rather release fish. There are also no-kill zones and in such places we mainly catch big fish. Outside of these zones and you have to be patient. When I was young, I did not release the fish because my father would take away. Fortunately, many years ago, when I grew up, I learned to release caught fish. It is beautiful :)

@@LooknFishy the brown (and other non-natives) would be better off the stream. Introduced species shrink the native fish habitat, by competing for resources and eating juveniles natives for example. We have to preserve what's unique about each of those places.

@@OctaveZangs We agree on protecting natives and their habitat. we just don't agree on how it seems. I've never read a single scientific article that says keeping non-natives helps restore the balance. Most times, the only effective means is poisoning the stream. But if you're aware of such an article, I would love to read it. In the end, I don't have any issue with those that keep their catch. I chose to release mine!

@@LooknFishy Non-natives are only managed for recreational purposes and NEVER for ecological or biological purposes. If a native species is present then it is always ecologically beneficial to remove as many non-natives as possible. Even if hybridization isn’t a possibility (brooks and cutthroat) the added competition for resources always places undue stress on the native fish population.

Thank u man, definitely appreciate it! So I usually start with a knotless tapered leader and then add tippet. I try to keep everything around 11 or 11.5 ft. So my set up would look like this...9ft 2x tapered leader...tippet ring...1ft 3x...1ft4x...first fly and then add 12-15 inches of 4or5x to a second fly.

Too sweet. Question: I am toying with getting a GoPro and videoing my own river exploits. Do you normally have it mounted on your head, or chest, or somewhere else? I am wondering how stable a head mount would be.

Almost always on my head. I wear a hat and use an old action hat mount (search action hat) hat didn't last long but the mount can be used on any hat. Has been really useful. I sometimes carry a tri pod style grip for non pov shots...but that's just to make the vids a little more non pov style. But those are the only 2 things I use to record my trips.

Sure I don't mind helping with that. So I start by just looking at blue lines. Then get some names, ask anybody I know in the area if that can help (promise not to share...never break my promise!). I use youtube to weed out spots ... if I search a spot and there's 10 vids=pass on it. Insa is also good at weeding out...I can get an idea who I might run into on the water and how blown up it is. I basically do this all year and start keeping folders of areas I might be interested in next season.

Great video. The scenery surpasses the fishing, I think. Question - what was the water temperature when you fished these Wyoming streams? in August? Many of the larger trout you caught required some time to recover before you could release them, suggesting that the water temps were higher. Just curious.

It was cold but I don't know for sure what the temp was...guessing that had more to do with how hard the fought as only a few of them needed some extra time to recover!

Another fabulous video Drew. I've been on Google Earth for hours since your last video, as well as my maps. Getting things narrowed down. I've got a Hero 4, but found the Hero 8 on sale so I'm going to grab one, as well as the Action Hat do it your self kit you mentioned in your last video. My 4 doesn't have stabilization so the 8 is a no brainer. Care to share what your video settings are?

Happy to, I record at 1080 at 60 frames/sec in wide. This gives me good quality video and doesn't take up a ton of digital space on sd cards. I have tried 2.7 and 4k...but those settings just eat battery and sd cards. In the end, I want to fish more and deal with the camera less and the settings above have worked for me but also get descent quality video.

Very little, I might add some brightness to the talking parts bc those are usually done when the light is fading. But not to the fishing scenes...except to slow a release down if I go too fast. I try to do very little. I edit in adobe premiere elements 13, it came on my laptop years ago.

Guess you mean when I show the dry...gopro doesn't do well up close. Had 2 on...sz 16 on the front sz 18 off the back. Both were productive.

We have friends in both Sheridan and Lander. I hope you're headed to the Winds on this trip, but if not, definitely come back - SO MUCH water on the east side of that range. Love your vids. Small stream fishing is one of my passions. Moving up creeks and fishing the pockets and runs is like meditation. Keep up the great work!

Yep, definitely worth the drive and look forward to doing it again. You'll see me fishing all year...we have mild winters where I live. Plus, redfish season for me, starts in about a month!

How do you know what flies to use?

Can get complicated based on type of water...but in general...stoneflies, mayflies and caddis cover most situations. I carry them in nymph, emerger and dry. Sz 16-18 in natural colors. In my opinion good presentation and general shape are more important than specific pattern.
