not eye-related, but one thing that helps many, is to have a fan gently blowing at you form the front. a lesser known trick for games with joystick controls is, to hold the right stick pushed foward when turning. this makes the turning much more controlled and less twitchy, which just feel better, even when you got strong VR legs. but most importantly: motion sickness isnt something to worry about, or that needs immediate fixing. IT'S NORMAL AT FIRST! ..and will drastically decrease over time.

tldr: Very true the motion sickness can drastically decrease over time. yes! I was shocked because the first time I played Alyx I said there is no way I can walk with joystick, I'm gonna have to teleport and I stopped playing after 20 minutes. Came back 2 days later and played Pavlov and Echo and had no problem! And to think I almost returned my Quest 2 because of that :D

Thanks for this! I’m a PT that has done a bit of vestibular rehab, and I’m also someone that has struggled with motion sickness my whole life. I was hesitant about getting into VR due to this, as well as my bad experiences on VR motion sim rides, trying out FPV drones with goggles, and using prior low tech VR (ie Google Cardboard). However, thus far I’ve done surprisingly well with my Quest 2 - I’ve really tried to avoid smooth movement /thumbstick controlled games and don’t try to push through any feelings of sickness. I’m hoping to push my VR legs a bit and see if there’s any real world motion sickness improvement. I will definitely continue to check out your channel!

VR treadmills are truly the solution to this like when I set up my PS VR2 with room scale if I walk forward 3 ft to walk 3 ft within the world I don't experience any sickness at all it's only when using the joystick while your actual body is standing still but your experiencing the movement in the game that is what makes you sick or at least for me so I feel like the VR treadmill is truly the best solution if it can ever become cheap enough for your average VR user

Thank you for another great video. I've gotten a bit whoosy/dizzy when my husband & I play Walkabout Mini Golf, especially when the course is set in high places. The space station course was the worst. He can do the flying motion in the game, where that gives me VR motion sickness. My husband shared an article with me about using chewing gum to counter cybersickness. I started chewing mint gum when we play and that seems to help me more than having candied ginger. I also got my Rx headset lenses from Reloptix, thanks to your video on Quest 2 Rx lenses, and am realizing that having the lenses apparently helped, too.

Turning on snap rotation helps a lot but I've also resorted to taking motion sickness/nausea meds 20 min before gameplay and afterwards which helps. I don't want my body to become reliant on it so I take short breaks after 20 minutes of gameplay like you suggested. Also, thanks for answering my question with the glasses. Hi, from Bucharest, Romania ! I am 39 years old and suffer from motion sickness since childhood. Antiemetic drugs are of no use to me and journeys, including by train, are tormented for me. I feel strong fatigue and nausea during a travel by train. Unfortunately in car rides is the worst. Besides the classic motion sickness that you describe in this video, I think I have an increased sensitivity to vibrations and speed variations. I feel pressure and an unpleasant sensation when the car is turning, accelerating and decelerating. Then I start to feel nauseous, feeling which sometimes suddenly increases in intensity. I have had a few flights recently. I feel every movement of the airplane like a strong pressure in the chest, back or head. Ofcourse, I also, sometimes feel nauseous on the plane and flying is stressful for me. I would not resist traveling more than an hour by the airplane. I really don't know how to stop being sensitive to speed variations and vibrations.

I just started using VR. I used the National Geographic game a few times. Movement in the game is one of two ways: instant teleportation or fluid movement (basically walking using the control stick). When I use instant teleportation I have no issues, I start using fluid movement I experience motion sickness and my balance is hard to maintain. It’s like a light switch for me: I turn it on, I feel sick and my balance is harder to maintain. Turn it off and sickness and balance issues go away. I definitely think it’s the visual cues not matching what your vestibular system is telling you.

Dr. EyeGuy, I am scheduled to have DMEK and the installation of Vivety lenses this summer. I am a school teacher that uses VR everyday with my students. I am concerned that the Vivety will make it so that VR will no longer look right and thus jeopardize my ability to do my job. Your thoughts?
@DrEyeGuy2 жыл бұрын
Excellent question Todd! There are a lot of things to consider and think about for this one. Overall I think it's going to be a good thing and likely improve your vision and actually help with VR. With the vivity lens (I'm assuming you are a doing a multifocal lens), it should provide distance, intermediate, and near vision...as long as it's positioned correctly. VR usually sets their focal point a little bit further out in the distance (Oculus Quest 2 is 1.3meters out). That lens should do well that far out because it has a good depth of focus. There may be some limitations with glare or halos in VR... possibly... I'm not sure? But overall, I would think that it should help. If it doesn't, there's still a chance with correction, either glasses or VR lens inserts, that it could help. Tough to say because of so many factors. Are you having this surgery in both eyes, or just one eye?

To give everyone here that when the Quest 2 is refered as the vomit machine, these users their IPD was not corresponding. Quest 2 has a fixed setting from 59/63/67, mine is 65, the quest 2 made me sick for two days, returned it thinking VR is nothing for me. Than I learned about this IPD, tried the Pico 4 (where you can set the IPD sharp by 0,5mm) and how boy I could play for an hour without any noticable signs of headache nearby. I talked to an optician about it and told me that using lenses in general with a difference of 2mm from your actual IPD was even dangerous to do, the doctor didn't understood that ''dangerous'' products like this were even sold without prescription. And I can tell you he's right as using the quest 2 for 30 minutes really gave me like migraine for two days. Can you guess what it would do when being stubborn and passing a whole day with the device thinking it's just a matter of getting used to the feeling.

Neck fan could be a good idea since I definately feel myself start to sweat as motion sickness sets in.

none of these helped me sadly not for the lack of trying. I wonder if its because the fluid in my ear not synchronizing with my eyes like what you where saying earlier. my body doesn't move as much as what shows in the vr games and the audio is't good enough to probably convince my ears or something of that matter.

How about your brain not registering your hands in a spacial sense after long sessions. Or is that a neurologist question 🙋 ?

I strongly don't recommend using glasses when playing VR. I've unfortunately scratched my PSVR 2's lens because my glasses rubbed up against it. There's now damage on my glasses and has become extremely distracting. Instead, invest in some perscription lenses for your specific VR headset

Hello! I just found your page looking for motion sickness treatments and I have an eye question. Last fall I got contacts for the first time. They worked great. I loved them. Until this year when the pollen hit and I haven’t been able to wear them since. They made my eyes so red they looked bloody and they felt like I had gravel in them now and then. (It’s not concretions) it looks like I have a permanent crescent shaped mark on each eye now from the contacts. The eye dr I’ve been going to just seems puzzled and gave me dailies to try because he can’t think of anything else. He says my eyes are suddenly dry. Any ideas on how to fix this? Am I doomed to glasses? Im so sick of them. 😫

I thought I had learned my lesson from a previous video...maybe I didn't. I just checked the video and it seems ok to me. I did use a different mic for this video and had issue with it with certain clips, which could be that. Sorry about that, that's what I get for trying something new. 😄
