audience experience (in those days it was an ordeal to go out and hear music) so it was great to hear an orchestra and see the great Mozart play the piano as well. He also played the violin and many other instruments, as there are violin, clarinet etc. concertos. They work off the same premiss, a solo instrument interwoven through the orchestra. If you haven't I would recommend Mozart's 20th, 23rd and 24th piano concertos. As well as the adagio of Mozart's Clarinet concerto.

You are probably confusing a piano concerto with a piano sonata. A piano sonata uses the piano only to construct every theme and melody. A piano concerto uses the orchestra to accompany and develop much of the material and melody along with a single solo instrument (in this case a piano). Mozart brought the form to it's pinnacle out of necessity, as much of his audience wanted to hear him play the piano as he was renowned and famous for his skill. He included the orchestra to enhance the
