my mum gave me a great advice before my final year presentation at university: "imagine that audience 20, 30 or 50 years from now", she said. She was so right. All the eminent professors that I was so afraid of are all dead as we speak. May they rest in peace. It is not a big deal!

And maybe you might be one of those dead people, I don't find it consoling.
@just_bee9482 Жыл бұрын
@@rolansanchez7046 it was not meant to be consoling but uplifting. And it was 20 years ago. It helped put things into perspective. We shouldn't fear men who are here today and ain't there no more tomorrow. Rather fear God!

The fear of public speaking is the greatest fear of all. The average person would rather die than having to speaking in front of an audience. Yes you heard me right. we fear public speaking more than death itself
@nsp744 ай бұрын
the best person to teach you on how to overcome nervousness in public speaking is someone who was actually terrified to speak in public and have overcome it this tip is really uncommon, this is the first time I heard such advice

Summary: To appear confident --> Work on your vocal modulation: 2 things to work on improving vocal modulations 1. Tone - conveys emotion if your voice 2. Intonation - rise and fall of your voice Practice musculature in your tone > by practicing embouchure. Why is it important? It makes muscles around your lips, tongue and pharynx strong. As a result, we lost control over our voice, resulting in shaking voice when you're nervous. To practice embouchure > squeeze your lips muscles, tongue and pharynx muscles with a spoon or fork and pout your lips like squeezing it.

Hi Dr. Grace Lee, I always have anxiety when speaking to someone. I always think that someone will get offended if I speak confidently. Therefore I speak them with soft voice but they tend to ignore me because they think I am unconfident and weak. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Grace, I always try to strike a balance between being confident, not interrupting the other speaker and passive in a conversation. I hate the interruption before someone finishes his/her sentence especially during the video call. Meanwhile, I do not want to sound passive during a conversation. When you get a chance, could you please share a video on this topic? Thank you.

I think this was God sent🥺 I'm in grade 12 now and ever since my grade 5, I started noticing I had stage fright! The sweaty palms, the shaking of my hands and body, the horrible 'cut-down' voice, I tried everything to help myself but then whenever I noticed I was the centre of attention, or it was coming to my turn to present, I'd start shaking.. no matter what! I've prayed, done all and all,I couldnt even pass my speech class cause if this🥺 I was the centre of laughter.. I'm so sorry I'm being so negative, I just hope this helps!

@Melvera you are not being negative. I remember being in front of my class in high school. My ears 👂 buzzing, legs🦵 shaking, lightheaded. I couldn’t hear my voice. I swore never again to stand in front of people. Fast forward 30 years later. I am an advocate for pedestrians. So I had to stand up in front of the city council to speak. I started by attending the meetings. Getting familiar with their language and format. Thank God I could hold on to the podium. Other meetings I was able to sit in my chair. In one meeting they allowed 3-5 minutes. They made me stay up 10. I thought I pass out. The panel took notes, asked me questions. And this is usual. I am prepared. I speak well. I’m not thinking about me. It’s just my body won’t listen. I heard, you do what you have to do, and ignore the rest. So I have. But still it doesn’t get better. I just joined Toastmasters.
@Dani-ef3cf3 жыл бұрын
@Melvera Oh let me say, maybe 🤔 I’m stubborn.. I just will not let it stop me from doing what has to be done. I have a saying: we do what we have to do, not what we want to do. So, onwards! I saw elderly people crossing the street and it wasn’t safe. Then, the kids at school did not have crosswalks on a road with speeds of 40 mph. I couldn’t just watch and stay quiet 🤫 I couldn’t, on my watch, allow a tragedy to happen. So I guess depends on the value of what is at stake. Looking back I will say, if your time comes, remember, they are just people. And you, know and have something they need. Simple.

But they will probably share the thoughts with each other later. And it is not one person making an opinion but 500. Also one one talking even tho it may be a presentation Is more like a conversation so the attention Is not just on you. But in a presentation with 500 people, it is not possible that everybody asks and people also dont ask in front of other people that much either.
