Thanks so much Greg! You're doing great here. I just finished my MPH from Ahmadu Bello University University Zaria, and you were among those that tilted me to this. I am getting a membership soon here soon!

Don't do a PhD if anyone expects it will create a career. One only does a PhD if one is compassionate with a research topic. On average, master's degree holders earn more.

Thanks so much for putting this together! You talk about things few students get to hear! It is incredibly useful and I will recommend your discussion to all my students! I agree with everything you say and also glad that it matches many of my points that I make during mentoring.

I'm interested in MSc Public Health, currently I am working on my Nebosh International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. I graduated from high school with commercial studies, I did my B. Comm degree 1st year. I dropped off to look after my father as he was sick to work, I then persued Occupational Health at University. I feel like I concur with what Dr David Suckler said, and our future Prof Javana, when you study this something makes you to crave for more. Another reason is, why not serve people in the other way, if you can't be a doctor dealing with people on daily basis, produce to help them.

A PhD will NOT guarantee a job in academia. Many university departments are operating with reduced staff numbers after years of funding cuts. Combine this with the fact that there are more people with PhDs than ever before. This means more people applying for fewer positions. That’s not to say that you won’t find work outside of academia or at other universities if you’re willing to travel. But, in the current climate you probably won’t get a job at the institution where you are studying.

Any comments about a PhD in Public Health versus a DrPH?

Dr Martin, as a global health MSc student, my mind is crossed or mixed on whether I should pursue a PhD. I love research and what it entails. I see PhD as an entry point to conduct independent research with people who take interest in the same subject. However, taking a PhD scholarship would mean a really big pay cut for the next 4 to 5 years (in fact, poorer than a degree graduate). Is it really wise to make such a trade-off, considering I am starting a family in a year or two from now?
