This was a wonderful video! Dr. Martin, I would highly suggest that you create an interactive version of the five categories (e.g., disease, exposure, population groups, issues) so that students and health professionals can mix and match to see (1) what possible careers are in that particular area; (2) what school or program best fit the area; (3) what fellowship program (which you should do a video about) relates to that particular area; and, (4) what organizations would be the best place for employment. This potential project can revolutionize the field of global health and help train future leaders in the field of global health.

Dr. Martin, I have watched a couple of your videos and I'm a BIG fan already (clarity and simplicity of presentation, enthusiasm, cute South African accent :)). I'm now wondering whether you provide any career consulting services for aspiring GH professionals, and I hope you that you do! I'm an assistant prof with a PhD in Computer Science (class of '02, University of Maryland College Park); currently looking to switch to a career in GH -- specifically interested in leveraging my computational, statistical, and mathematical modeling skills for the study of GH problems. Given my hard sciences background and age (mid-career rather than a 20 something fresh graduate!), I'm not sure about the best way to get my foot in the door. I've tried applying for research scientist positions but it seems they require experience (good old chicken and egg problem!). Would you recommend I pursue a degree related to GH such as an MPH, or some kind of professional certification? Please help!

Great videos! Always been extremely interested in Global Health. I am in my late 40's, been in private practice as a dentist for 20 years. I am looking into a career change into global Health, possible getting a MPH degree. What are the career opportunities to contribute as a dentist , in oral disease at WHO or some other international health organization?
@gregmartin8 жыл бұрын
+Tania Florez Thanks for the question. While I'm not very familiar with the world of dental health, I can assure you that there will be a lot going on in the global health space. Dental issues are certainly a major contributor to the global burden of disease and have implication for other areas like heart disease etc. The fact that you have a medical background will also allow you to add value in many other areas of global health (especially if you do an MPH). Here is a link to the WHO oral health page: www.who.int/oral_health/en/ (hope this helps)

Thank you for your inspiring videos. After being a Paramedic for over 10 years, and a trip to Haiti, I decided that there are populations that needed a voice. I am currently a public health major w/a concentration in community education. Are there any positions in global health where a bachelors would be useful? Working overseas is particularly interesting to me. I would like to gain experience as I pursue my MPH. Have you made a video for BPH graduates? Thank you for sharing your knowledge w/us!
@gregmartin6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great question. I'm sure that there are roles and positions available for BPH graduates. Getting your first job and initial experience can be hard because a lot of jobs require "experience" in order to apply. Don't worry about it. Do whatever you can. Do volunteer would if possible. Work as an intern if there is an opportunity. Do whatever it takes to get some experience. Down the line, if you are able to do an MPH, that would be brilliant!! Good luck.

Excellent Dr Martin just i have two questions that i would like you to clarify to me . first what is the role of epidemiology in global health ? and my second question is what can of opportunity i would get if i get my master degree in epidemiology. note to that i would like to work international health agency and i live a third world country where epidemiology is not really common but i really don't know if this discipline(epidemiology) is wright for me ?
@gregmartin8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the excellent question. Epidemiology is pivotal to Global Health - it is the discipline that helps us understand the magnitude and distribution of the burden of disease, the impact of our inventions and underpins our response to health threats. If you study epidemiology you'll be in an excellent position to add value to almost any global health agency - if you're interested, then I highly recommend that you study epidemiology (its a fantastic discipline).

Dear Greg, Love your informative content. Just had one question.I did my B.Pharm(from Bangladesh) & then completed MPH from UK. Unfortunately, i have heard that it can be quite difficult for a non-medic student to build a career in the field of public & global health, since i don't have a medical degree. Is it really the case?
@hannahbehrens91946 жыл бұрын
Hi, I just watched the whole series "Working in Global Health", it's great! You mention consulting work several times. It doesn't sound like you mean management consulting or consulting companies in the health space. Maybe more something like freelance writing and research? Could you expand on what kind of consulting projects you do/mean? Or is there already a video about it? Thanks!
@gregmartin6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Hannah. There are many different kinds of consulting (so its a good question). It's quite a big topic and I can't cover it in this comment but will make a video that addresses it specifically. I think that I might have a video on "how to get consulting work" on the channel but I'll make another one soon.

Please I am a pharmacist and I'm currently doing a MSc in International Public Health how ever my interest is in MPH not MSPH. I didn't really know that MSc in Public Health was different from MPH as of the time I applied. What do you advice me to do? Thank you.
@gregmartin3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry at all. The knowledge and skills that you learn in each course are very similar and very transferable. When applying for jobs, employers will recognize an MPH and MSc Public Health as equivalent.

Great video Dr. Martin, I saw this link from LinkedIn and have watch most of your videos in the past hour, very informative information. I have a question what kind of opportunities would I get with a master degree in Public health? I have a few more months until I complete my Masters, I want to focus on the discipline Maternal and Child health. Are there any opportunities abroad for this discipline?
@gregmartin7 жыл бұрын
Hello DeeDee - thanks for the question. Yes there are lots of opportunities all over the world in the area of maternal and child health. I suggest that you make a list of organisations working in that area (like UNICEF for example) and take a look at what posts are being advertised (just to get a feeling for what is out there). You could get involved with programme management, portfolio management, grant management, M&E, field work, advocacy work, policy work, data analysis etc. etc. (it really depends on what you're interested in and where your strengths are). Good luck!

Thanks for very inspiring video. As a 2nd year pharmacy student (not in US though) I wish to tackle climate change and public health issue as my future career. but it seems there are few phamarcy-based MPH degree holders online and offline... Is considering MPH after PharmD degree a bad idea? What fields of MPH could i handle better with my background?
@gregmartin5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. I think that doing an MPH after your PharmD is a good idea (its a good combination). You'll find that your pharmacy training stands you in good stead as you'll have a detailed understanding of health issues.

Thanks for the question. Yes, absolutely. You don't have to tie yourself down to just one disease area. In the next video (which will come out later this week) I'll talk about the different roles you might play in the global health space. You might find that it helps you think through what it is that you want to do. 😀

Do you think there will be a lot of jobs in public health for medical doctors who want to focus on the economy /financing / IT / software side of the medical system? i.e. I would love to work on streamlining the work flow with computers in both the clinical world, the lab side of medicine (pathology lab) and also be invloved in utilising this data in some big way i.e. the emerging field of data science. ? Is this viable? - Up until now I have been looking to pathology but now I am thinking that public health may offer more opportunities to really tailor what I do into a job that I love and am really passionate about.
@gregmartin8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I keep hearing terms like "big data" and "machine learning" but don't see people really applying these ideas to their full potential in the public health space. Someone like you would be in demand for sure! I could definitely help put you in touch with the right people.

With a Master degree in Physiotherapy (background), and presently studying MPH from Germany, would it be possible for me to pursue any of the following as my future career: WHich one of the following would be best for me as per my background education? Though they all carry equivalent importance as per my career perspective...... Chief Medical Officer, Chronic Disease Management Coordinator, Clinical Infectious Disease Specialist, Communicable Disease Analyst, MPH Epidemiologist or Epidemiologist , Tropical Disease Specialist and International HIV Specialist. Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the question. I'd like to suggest that at this stage (while you're studying your MPH), you should use this opportunity to explore the various aspects of public health that interest you. As your areas of interest become more apparent, the right kinds of jobs to apply to will become obvious to you. I hope that helps. Greg
