Love the manner you use to talk about this. There is no man behind the curtain here, there is no "if you're academically inclined", just "if you want to do this, work hard in this". And I love that, I feel like it's a message lost these days. Really good information as well, can't wait to delve into your other videos.

Hi Martina - thanks for the comment and for the great question. It's interesting (and fantastic) that you've got a very specific interest. Vaccine research is certainly one of the most exciting areas of public health out there! Given your focussed interest, you might want to do an MSc in vaccinology (instead of an MPH). A PhD is a great option if you're interest is in pure research and a DrPH is a great option if you're interested in programmatic implementation of research results.

Thanks for the comment. One option is to do some volunteer work or work as an intern for a short period of time (so you could for example apply to the World Health Organization's intern program). The problem with that is of course that you won't get paid and you still need to make ends meet. If you have some spare time, you could just reach out to people and organizations and ask them if there is anything you can do to help out. Remember to ask for a reference (or a job) when its over. Good luck

Thanks for the question Karen. The world of 'global health' desperately needs people like you that have a "business management" background. The day to day work in any organization is really about managing people, managing projects and managing budgets! How easy or hard it is to find a job is a tough question. I guess it depends on factors like your mobility (are you prepared to relocate?) and what level of seniority you're wanting to enter into to. Next step: network like crazy!

Great video. Thank you. I'm a dentist by training and will be starting an MPH in September here in Accra,Ghana at the ENSIGN college of Public Health. It's a joint partnership between University of UTAH and the Kwame krumah university of Kumasi. I live in a continent where commucable and non-communicable diseases kill millions of people every year. Statistics are dreadful despite the fact that a lot of international, governmental and private institutions are working hardly to reduce the impact of these diseases on the population. I'm sure the MPH will give me skills and knowledge that I need to be able to make a positive impact in my community, my country and the whole continent.

Hey there Dr. Martin, In the swamps of graduating with my bachelors and diving into the global health realm, thanks for the video! It's hard work trying to stay driven about the subjects you care about when you need to make ends meet and you're not striking gold. I've heard lots of "Do's" in terms of what to try and pursue, any "donts?" Since I feel like I've heard all the encouraging pieces, do you have anything that us recent grads should NOT do, but may not know to avoid? Perhaps in regards to applications, side jobs, anything else you may be able to offer?

Greg! I'm so appreciative of your helpful advice and experience. I am a 40-year-young single mom finishing her BS in Psychology. I think I have to switch gears going into my graduate program, I was thinking of concentrating on the MS in education and promotion. My goal is to do global work and wind up with the UN or WHO. I'm not choosing the MPH program because I can't bare THAT many statistic and biology courses - I'm just not cut for that. Do I have a shot? Also, I would love to hear your suggestions of other public health concentrations that can get me on the right path. Thank you ever so much for helping all of us find our way.

Thank you for a great video that summarises all the options out there. I have finished my MIPH at the University of Sydney and is currently applying to field posts in Sub-Saharan Africa. I have a question regarding faith-based organisations. I have volunteered with them for a while, and I'm finding myself having to apply to them again as it's generally easier to get into them compared to secular organisations. Will this affect my career in the long run if faith-based organisations aren't my thing? Do you recommend I'd go for national NGOs instead?
@gregmartin
@gregmartin 8 жыл бұрын
+Kirollos Fares Thanks for the interesting question. The main thing is that you're getting experience and gaining skills and competencies (I don't think that it matters whether or not you're working in a faith based organisation or not). While working in the field you'll develop a network of colleagues from across a broad range of organisations. With time those contacts will be invaluable in terms of identifying additional career opportunities. Good luck!

I just saw your video on public and global health via youtube and I am very interested in this topic. However, I would like to know what the exact difference is between a master in global health or a master in public health. To me it seems like the same kind of topics are addressed. Also, is it important to have a master in public health to work in this field? In the Netherlands they offer masters like 'health and society' (Wageningen University), which seem to cover the same kind of topics. Thank you for answering my questions.
@gregmartin
@gregmartin 9 жыл бұрын
Roos Dekker thanks for your question. So the difference between an MPH and a MSc Global Health is simply that a masters in global health will, in addition to provision training in the usual public health disciplines, try to give you an understanding of some of the global processes and institutions that impact on health (by global, we mean "supranational" - outside of the geopolitical boundaries of any nation state). A masters in global health will probably also include "comparative health systems" looking at the different ways that countries address public health. There is likely to be an emphasis on public health in developing countries too. A masters in public health is likely to focus on the health problems in the country that it is offered. Getting a masters of some kind is useful, yes. The kind of masters you do is far less important that the specific skills that you leave with (which is really up to you). I hope that this helps.

I am medical student from a developing country. I am involved in community work. How can I build my CV after med school in order to work in the area of global health. What are the work oppurtunities available? Do I need an MD OR MPH directly? Should I opt for doing an MPH in famous collages like John hopkins and harvard? Does it make any difference?
@gregmartin
@gregmartin 9 жыл бұрын
Mani Harika Tummala Thanks for the question. If you're wanting to work in "global health" then the best thing to do is to get experience in general "public health" in your country. You don't need an MD. At some point it's a good idea to get an MPH (but don't feel as if you have to get it right away). Going to a famous school like Johns Kopkins is nice but not essential. They are also extremely expensive. I you can afford it or can get a scholarship then by all means, go ahead. Otherwise, study at a local university, get involved with local NGOs. Write papers where you can. Network like crazy. And keep your eyes open for the right opportunity. Good luck!

hi Snooplion86 As a starting point, I would look at DNDi (they are a very interesting organisation doing fantastic work). You could also look at the TB Alliance and other disease specific organisations. If you want to book some time to chat to me about this directly, you can schedule a slot here: helpouts.google.com/102747256038799395194/ls/803ce2088ac8e53e

Thanks for the informative video. I have a few questions related to this topic, I'm a recent graduate from an undergrad in sciences and working at a federal health organization as a biologist. However, I'm looking to pursue a masters in public health, as I feel the work is more meaningful and fulfilling. My only concern is that I do not posses the requirements (as in educational requirements) to be a useful graduate from an MPH program. I'm not sure if that's completely true, but would you be able to clarify this in any way? And what I mean by requirements is that I feel like a person with an MD would be more useful to be in this sort of field rather than someone with a science background.. if that makes sense.
@gregmartin
@gregmartin 8 жыл бұрын
+Eblock01 Thanks for the question. Trust me, you will absolutely be able to make a meaningful contribution with your background and with an MPH. You don't need an MD at all. In fact, the more diversity we can bring into public health the better. Good luck!

Dear Dr. Martin! Thank you very much for this video, so far it's one of the few useful guides I encountered during my job search. I have a question for you if you would not mind. I'm an MA in Political Science student about to graduate (from CEU, Budapest, Hungary), but I am highly interested in Public Health and wrote my MA thesis on introduction of mandatory social health insurance in Switzerland, Israel and South Korea. I'm planning to apply for an MS in Public Health, but prior to that I would like to get some work experience, so could you tell me what could my options be? Best, Ivan.
@gregmartin
@gregmartin 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Ivan Polynin - I'm glad to see people like yourself (with a political science background) getting involved with public health (you'll add a lot of value). In terms of getting some experience, one option might be to do an internship with either a UN agency (like the WHO or UNICEF) or a large NGO like CHAI. Getting some experience before doing your MPH is a great idea and you'll get a lot more out of the programme. Good luck!

This video is really inspiring because it gave me an idea what to do. I have been submitting my CV to WHO and UNICEF, but am still waiting. Can you further explain the role of independent consultants and how do to get that positions? Thank you Dr. Greg, I will appreciate it so much if you give me some advise.

Dr Martin, thank you for your informative video, I have a question about the Master programmes which I have applied for. and my question is; Is there any difference between MSc Health Management and MSc Health care Management? and if they are different Master programmes, which one is better in terms of their job prospects. thank you.
@gregmartin

Thanks for the question jahed345 - actually I don't think that there is a difference (well, certainly not that I know of). Are these two programs being offered by different universities (in which case I guess they are referring to the same sort of thing)? You might be able to look a the curriculum of the programs online (which will help). good luck

hello Dr Greg,ive just finished medicine and i really wanted to have a career in Global Health. pops praharsha - thanks for the question. There certainly are some schools that are better than other and schools that have excellent "reputations" (which is sometimes useful). That said, choosing a school is a function of many variables (what you can afford, where you live, what you're interested in, etc.) At the end of the day, provided you work hard, network like crazy and keep interested in public health, you'll find your way... Good luck!

My undergrad is in business management. My dream job is in maternal and child health in global health. My kids are older now and this is my chance to live my dream! Do I have any chance of finding a job? What would be your advice for me? Do I have a really tough road ahead? Thank you for your thoughts!

I can't list them all here but I'll be coming out with a book soon that gives an overview of the landscape. Good luck!

Hi, great Jobs with your videos, I must say I really do enjoy them. I am an M.D with about 3 years clinical experience, I have also completed an MSc in Health Systems and Public Policy last September. I have an interest in health systems/policy, health financing and social determinants of health. I am writing because I have tried everything possible at securing a job since I completed my dissertation including independent consultations, internships with no success. I would really appreciate your advice on what steps to take to increase my chance of employability in my interested field. thank you.

+Hirra thanks for the question. It's not an easy thing to address in just a few lines. I will say this though, network like crazy. Get into LinkedIn and reach out to people working in organisations that you're interested in. Ask them for advice. Start little side projects with them. Invite them to coauthor a paper with you etc. It might take time but will pay off.

Great question Bodinga Boyiga - there are two things that you need to make yourself an attractive candidate to the WB or WHO: 1) some experience and 2) a masters degree. The masters degree doesn't have to be an MPH (could could do a masters in epidemiology, health economics, policy etc.). Good luck!

That's a great question, Jonathan. You'll find that your background in biotech stands you in good stead. The skill set that I think is extremely important in public health and global health is an understanding of epidemiology (I have a video that provides the basics but you might want to do a short course or get a book). Good luck.

Hello Dr! first, thank so much for the video. It gave me a big push towards my plans and projects. So, Thank you for the inspiration. I have been trying to reach you to ask you, I'm not sure this youtube is a good area to ask but I'll try. I'm a Pulmonology fellow trying to get into MPH. My big plan is to specialize in Lung disease ( esp Asthma), pollution/smoking and renewable energy. I'm not sure if MPH will be a good start but I think my passion goes around this triad. Any thoughts?
@gregmartin
@gregmartin 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message - great to learn about your interest in lung disease, pollution and renewable energy - wow - a fascinating triad. The short answer to your question is YES - an MPH is an excellent stepping stone for getting skills in the area of epidemiology, policy etc. that you'll find extremely useful as you continue this work. It will also give you an excellent opportunity to learn about what's already happening in this field and to network with the appropriate professionals. Good luck!!

So How can apply to the WHO vacancies specially for the Asian pacific Region and rest all.

Hi Atul - if you go to the WHO webpage and take a look at positions that are currently being advertised you might find something that is along the lines that you're looking for. You may need to back to the page periodically before you find exactly want you want. In the interim, I would try to find someone work for the WHO in that area and offer to do consulting work for them.
