Instead of waiting for the news and being reactive be proactive and start buying all the necessary things you need to keep yourself safe. I just ordered three boxes of 3M N95 mask at regular prices. The day that you hear this information in the news is the same day that every single mask will be pulled off the market just like they did last time or they will sell out instantly. Stock up on hand sanitizer Etc. In Japan they even ran out of land to bury all the dead birds that's how bad this disease is spreading throughout the world

I've got ducks and geese. My children and i eat their eggs. How do i know if a bird in my my flock has H5N1? Is H5N1 transmitted to humans through feces, eggs, saliva, or other means? I assume washing hands, not touching face after handling birds is good practice. Any other precautions you could suggest?

You're death rate statistics are almost certainly exaggerated. We have no idea what the death rate in humans would be like. We know that there are asymptomatic cases as we've seen them in the US and we have no idea how many there are

Well… that’s just not true. We know what the mortality rate from Influenza A(H5N1) is because we have quite simply counted the number of deaths in people who have contracted it from birds. There have been over 900 cases. About half of which have died. Almost all children that have contracted it have died. These are the facts.

@@gregmartin you think 900 cases over 25 years is appropriate to extrapolate to 7 billion people to predict what it would be like if it started spreading in humans? That's absolutely nuts dude. If you believe your numbers truly represent reality you have to 1. Believe there are virtually no undetected human cases and 2. Believe that these 900ish cases in mostly farmers over 25 years are representative of the whole population. Do you know any farmers? Do you know how sick or hurt they have to be before they will finally go to the doctor? You have to claim that there is almost no undetected cases for you numbers to be even close to accurate. Of which there is 0 evidence that there are none. We have identified quite a few mild illnesses that tested positive for bird flu just this year. These cases would've never been detected even 5 years ago, because no one was looking for asymptomatic cases. So assume we take the 4 asymptomatic cases identified this year and say there were likely at least 4 of these cases in previous years? What does that do to your "death rate"? 50% is almost certainly not representative of the true contraction/fatality rate.

Let's go through the fundamental deductive reasoning here. I'll make some statements and we determine if they are true. Statement 1. Severe cases of an illness are more likely to be detected. It's pretty obvious that this statement is true is it not? Statement 2. Mild illness caused by the virion is possible. If these 2 statements are in fact true then based on logic your cited statistics have to be higher than the true fatality rate, that's just a fact

Given that infection to poultry workers is so rare, even when the flock is infected, seems to say transmission only happens trough injuries getting into the blood. So it's totally overblown, esp since the chicken don't seem to get very sick from it

The H5N1 strain can make birds very sick, close to a 100% fatality rate for domesticated birds, while strains like H3N8 which has infected 3 people rarely get birds ill. It depends on the strain and with H5N1 having mutated to infect other mammals and transmit from cows to humans, this strain along with H7N9 are a major concern. Eventually they will become virulent in humans, question is when it happens will we be prepared?
