Tuners are not bad. You have to have a little self control with them is all. I have an 03 dodge cummins crew dually. Pre emissions. I have a Smarty jr tuner on mine. The only thing you have to watch out for is the fuel pressure boxes. They can cause alot of trouble.

Steve, for your trailer and truck, how much weight room do you have left? Is this because of your GCWR? Or the towing capacity of your vehicle.? This has been something I have been trying to understand better. thx
@PrideandJoyRupert
@PrideandJoyRupert 7 жыл бұрын
Room depends on what you are hauling. lets say your GCWR is 30,000. Truck is 10,000, trailer is 6000 this would leave you 14000 that you could load onto your trailer. If you were hailing bricks you would not fill the trailer to reach 14000 but if hailing empty plastic crates you would fill the space up before running out of pounds. Many people say "buy a 40 foot trailer" when I was hailing I used a 30 footer and NEVER ran out of space as most flatbed loads are heavy. Remember: most hitches are rated at 25000 with some going to 30000 This means max trailer lbs + load would need to be under the 25000/30000 I may be wrong, but I think the max GCWR for safe operation is 30 to 36000. you would need to check the truck specs.

I was getting loads using load boards. this provided me with all kinds of loads, mostly steel, tractors, power supply units, construction stuff. Many hotshots run pulling "uship" items, which are household things like snowmobiles, cars, etc. This means that the loads are lighter and you may want a forty footer to haul multiple items. for example: pick up snowmobile at location 1, then pick up suv location 2 and so on. problem with household is you end up with "touch freight" where you need to load it, etc. when dealing with commercial, you show up and you get loaded by the side or by a crane, then you just strap it down. keep in mind, you are not getting paid for the extra time that it takes to load the car, or help the guy move junk out of the way so you can help him carry the snowmobile to the trailer. just some things to think about.

If you are pulling a trailer over 40 ft. in Fla. with a PU it's $250 dollar a foot over 40, up to $1000. I know I paid it. Check carefully every states laws on Hot shots. Also know this, you will be inspected at every scale and pulled over by all inspection vehicles.

The blue trailer at the top left cannot carry more weight...it is a dual axle single wheel trailer and the gross weight of those trailers are only 14,000 lbs. Only tripple axle or dual tandem axle trailers can haul 21,000(tripple)/24,000(dual tandem) lbs.

Thanks Steve. Are you pulling a flatbed trailer? If so, how long? Do you find your cost of owning a tractor and trailer higher than the hotshot setup you had before? You made a comment in your original videos that the big tractor trailers are pulling more weight, but at the end of the day the hotshots bring home more money. Has that changed because you realized that there is not enough hotshot loads out there? Please explain the real truth so I don't spend a lot of time, energy and money getting into a new profession. I currently make $84,000/year gross, but I love the idea of getting on the road and running my own business. Having said that, I still want to be able to provide for my family with same lifestyle they currently have. I really appreciate your time, information and insight.

Requirements of a Hotshot Driver Hotshot trucking doesn't always require a CDL, but it is recommended. So if you're running hotshot loads lighter then 26,000 lbs you are not required to have a CDL. The federal requirement specifies that, when a vehicle has a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or less, the operator does not need a CDL. ... When a trailer has a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more and the combined GCWR of the truck and trailer is 26,001 pounds or more, a CDL is required of the operator. Not all hotshot loads are huge requiring large truck and/or trailers you can hotshot lots of smaller loads when using a smaller vehicle such as I did hotshoting needed medical supplies in a E250 Van. You can to the website ( www.uship.com/ ) and bid on loads to hotshot.

Hi Steve, I like your vids. I'm trying to start my own Hot Shot Business. I have to admit, it's a little tougher than I thought. I've heard something about having to have a doctors physical. I understand some of the reasoning for that, but what all do they check in the physical? I've been working on getting my truck up to speed which is pretty much done and I was gonna start on the paper work and save for a trailer next. But I'm thinking I should go get a physical, because if I don't pass then the rest is for nothing. What do you think?

I saw a video about a guy that put a million miles on his Tundra as a hot shot and it sounded like he just used the bed of the truck, no trailer. Think it was for the oil industry, no idea what he hauled though. It would be awesome if there was that kind of work available, all you'd need is a half-ton truck.

I get alot of work because of the card. I also stay completely away from the northeast and away from the east coast if I can. I make really good money just running the middle of the country. Get a good fuel cell too. I have a 50 gallon combo tool box. Also the ELD's aren't really affecting my money, just run legal. just my thoughts

Steve, how do you handle sleeping arrangements for your drivers on overnight trips? Buy a motel for them? Do they pay their lodging? Or get an extended cab truck and have them sleep in the back seat? Thanks.
@PrideandJoyRupert
@PrideandJoyRupert 6 жыл бұрын
If they sleep in the truck they gotta make sure the sleeper area is up to code, and so NO backseat sleeping. the hotel depends on how you want to structure things: who owns the truck? if its owner operator running under your authority then that will be up to the owner, if you are hiring drivers for trucks your company owns then will be on you. there are other ways to work things out, but generally that's how I would work it. If the truck has regulation size sleeper, then sleeper time. ;-)

@PrideandJoyRupert
@PrideandJoyRupert 6 жыл бұрын
I've met people who bring camping equipment, there are some who do sleep in the truck and log the time as off duty, some get a hotel. The bottom line is you can not log your sleeping time as "off duty in sleeper" as a stock pickup does not have a sleeper.

Steve, thanks for the very helpful information. Are you still in the hotshot business? Is the hotshot business still doing well? I will have my CDL by the end of the month and I'm looking to buy a 2019 F350 DRW and a 30 ft PJ flatbed trailer based on your advice. Do you still stand by your recommendation of 30ft or should I go up to 34ft? What load boards are best for hotshot truckers? Is the DAT board the best or do they just have good marketing? How do I convince brokers to book loads with me with no commercial experience hauling general freight? I have hauled my personal 30 ft RV and 20ft boat for the last 15 years and I have a spotless driving and criminal record. Will that help?

I am actually in a tractor now. There is money in hot shot but I am thinking it makes more sense to spend money on a used tractor rather than an expensive pick up. The tractor can haul anything where a pick up is limited. If making a purchase I would go with a tractor.

I suggest you check out these sites. hoosier-rv-transport. com or horizontransport. com and you can see going pay rates which are subject to change but will give you a good idea of pay. Please note any and all companies abide by all DOT rules and regulations. What I put in the comments is just an opinion and not a fact or recommendation. These guys rvtransport. com pay $1.34 a mile for pulling a single trailer. So depending on your equipment and miles per gallon depends on what you can make. I'm seeing some mid to small size SUV's pulling mid size trailers. Probably get 15 mpg loaded but get 25-28 mpg on the way back to the yard. Of course they are not designed to haul campers all over so breakdowns could happen and hurt the pocket book if not under warranty.

I agree with leaving the OEM chip in. After all, those companies spent _huge_ amounts of money into engineering that chip to work with that exact powertrain. Not that aftermarket can't make it work better, but did the aftermarket R&D department factor everything about added or subtracted stresses on components in the powertrain or drivetrain? I guess if you're going with aftermarket _anything_ do extensive research and make sure it's reputable, popular and easy to source overnight.
@garlandjones7709

Those tunes from oem account for reliability plus emissions. Nothing wrong with aftermarket. They make more power and get better fuel mileage. Dealers don't want warranty work for someone beating the piss out of a truck. Nothing to do with using it normally or even part throttle acceleration on a hill while loaded.

Hi, thanks for sharing your videos. Couple questions though, I've spoke with several different people involved with trucking with their thoughts on the hotshot business. One person I knew said that it takes a while to get going but if you can save some money, avoid breakdowns, and maintain a professional attitude, than this can be very profitable. On the other hand I spoke with a trucker who said this was a waste of time, as there was no hotshot, ltl work in Ontario. He said I may as well drive a tractor trailer, but also said that it's not very wise to be independent and it's not the same type of trucking as hotshot. With your experience do you believe this to be true or is this a example of someone claiming something can't be done because they can't do it. I've been a company driver and have done ltl on the side, I believe it can be done and there is work in Ontario for this...

Do not live in the wilderness, unless you are paid to do so. Cattle Ranchers, Growers, Harvesters, Game Wardens, Lumberjacks, Grocers that serve rural areas.....all have a reason (it all comes back to Philosophy ) for being there. In Ontario (my father is Canadian) the economy is spotty and you have to really look for work if you are in a rural area. Lay out a map in front of you, grab a cup of coffee, and decide where you want to work and then live. So many people "get away from it all" only to realize that they need BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY to eek out a paycheck so they can eat, buy beer, eggs, bacon and afford a wife and family. Most of Canada, review your map ...sip your coffee ... is beautiful and rural. Live near a population center that is "underserved" in the hotshot business and do your best to have a good REASONABLE mechanic and an alternate vehicle in case of a breakdown. Most autoparts companies WILL give you a trade discount too since you use your truck for business and work not pleasure. Decide well and live near CIVILIZATION please.

What about an f250 and hauling under 26K do you still need a CDL? Using a 14K goose neck. Total weight would be 25K fully loaded.

The other reply is wrong, YES you'd need a class A CDL. If the trailer has a GVWR over 10K and it's commercial use, then you need a class A CDL.

I'm not sure about the commercial use part. if the GVWR is over 10klb then yes you need a cdl. If you cross state lines for hire, then yes regardless of weight (i think). If you haul my riding mower for pay and you don't leave the state and are under 10klb, then i don't think you do. Please correct if i'm wrong.

40 is the norm, NOT the standard. Mine is a 30 foot deck air ride gooseneck. Depending on the loads, you will typically weigh out (hit max weight) before you cube out (fill the trailer). However, more and more, some companies are using 42 to 48 feet long trailers. Most trailers used have a weight rating of 24,900 pounds which is the weight of the trailer and the load. The companies that are going with longer trailers are using heavier axles for heavier weight rating.
@PrideandJoyRupert

Newell Trucking LLC Hello, yes, this is exactly my point. Many new comers think they need to get 40', but I also use a 30" trailer and as you say I hit the max weight before running out of room.

Its not a power adder it just basically makes the truck run smoother and use less fuel. Do the guys that have modifications get along ok as far as inspections for dot?

Nothing against this channel, but the vehicles considered "hot shot" trucks are the literal minimum necessary for hauling these loads. Anyone considering starting a hired hauler venture should seriously look into real medium duty chassis/ single axle semi or tandem axle tractors. A single axle tractor will handle in town just as well or better than a pickup, while also providing a much more stable platform for hauling the trailers outlined here. Uneven loads can and will cause trailer sway and create a dangerous situation for a small pickup chassis.

You want cheap "Hot Shot" units ready to go? Try North Dakota, Alberta or Texas. There are a dime-a-dozen available from operators who have gone bankrupt. Want a quick way to the poor house? Start up a hot shot service. 90% end up broke.

Andrew Carnegie said " ...mind the pennies and the pounds (British currency) will take care of themselves..." North Dakota and Alberta and Texas are OIL STATES and many people suffered with the DOWNTURN in the OIL PATCH business malady in '14, '15 and '16. Do your hauling where the MARKET IS UNDERSERVED and LEARN HOW TO REFUSE WORK FROM PIT BOSSES /LOADERS who WANT YOU TO HAUL THEIR STUFF FOR FREE....

How could they not end up broke..? They haul the cheapest loads the flat/step have left over. And usually for a lot less. It’s really sad actually to see people so enthusiastic about working that hard for practically minimum wage after cost.
